BB24-22. Joyce Ingram & Money Education

Building Your Business with Sara Troy and her guest Joyce Ingram, on air from May 28th

Financial literacy isn’t something readily taught or available these days.  More and more people are googling for their information and piecing it  together whether it’s correct or not.

People and especially women may be hesitant to share about their financial situation as they may be feeling ashamed of where they’re currently at or don’t understand it or even what’s available to save money, pay off debt, protect their income and more.  Some may feel they should be further ahead than they are.

Taking personal responsibility to educate and understand how to have your money work harder for you is the first place to start.

Also back in my early 30’s I had a vision of a community whereby I supported women and children in need – a safe place for them to Become educated in business, dress for success, a gym, hair stylist to help them go into the business world, feeling safe and confident.  I have the financial vehicle to do this.

I was too busy to look at my personal finance and relied a professional to help me figure out what I needed to save for retirement.

Once I decided to enter a mentorship program to understand the education and get my licensed, I quickly learned there was so much more!  I didn’t get the full financial overview from a 30,000 ft level, finding gaps of where I could improve my financial picture.  I wasn’t educated on products that I had bought into.  In fact, the light bulb went on when I was contributing to my kid’s RRSP when a better product to protect them and save money at the same time would’ve been better.  In fact I had this produce and had no idea the benefits it would provide if I just funded it properly, allowing tax free access in my later years as well as to my beneficiaries.

I thought I was pretty savvy when it came to finances and when I realized what I had learned, I knew in my gut not everyone was educated in how to save for short and long term goals while creating generational wealth.

2 key things I share:

  1. It’s never too late to start savings, and with the Rule of 72 or compounding interest, the younger you have, the longer your money can compound.
  2. What is your financial independence number?  Once I understand your financial picture (all assets and liabilities, insurance, when you want to slow down from work) etc.  I will provide you with a number of your FIN# and reverse engineer a plan to get your from where you are currently to where you want to be.
