People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan…
I wish to focus on how we all have habits but not all habits are good ones.The question is “How can we change poor habits into good ones?” We discuss some simple structures and ideas for all age groups no matter what their financial situation is.
Regardless of one’s income, the rules of managing one’s finances are the same. Whether you are a university student or retired, the rules are the same when it comes to managing your financial affairs. You need to look at the rules as though they were tools. Like all tools, if you don’t know how to use them, the outcome will probably be different than what you were expecting.
We learn through example and experience. A more comfortable way to learn is through the experiences of others. I believe that life is a series of reconnaissances. We engage, don’t realize the intended outcome, and then try again. We all make mistakes. To try again after making a mistake and avoiding that mistake will advance us closer to our goal. As in life, this is true in managing our financial affairs. I like to use analogies, and one that I use for finances is to consider your financial plan as a sailboat that you are trying to navigate. Knowing the rules can help us navigate through the financial seas of life. This does not mean that there will not be any storms brewing ahead. However, knowing that there could be, allows us to be prepared and have plans to weather the storm should they occur.
No matter what age you are, everyone has money problems and the stress can be debilitating for some. Bad habits can be corrected. Too often though, people start at a young age working with their finances without proper guidance. Bad habits are formed and, unfortunately, some of these habits remain with them throughout their lives. It is never too late to get on board and replace bad habits with good ones.
No one has more to gain or lose regarding your financial choices than you do. Make the right choices by educating yourself.

Michael has been a Life Licensed professional since 1996 and brings over 30 years of experience as a Financial Planner. He successfully completed the Certified Financial Planning Program in 2004 and earned the Certified Senior Advisor designation in 2005. He is also a Certified Preplanning Consultant (CPC), a designation conferred by the National Funeral Directors Association in 2003. His professional development includes graduating from the Excellence Series in 1997—completing The Pursuit of Excellence, The Wall, and The Advancement of Excellence—and passing the Canadian Investment Funds Course the same year. Since the age of 19, Michael has either owned businesses or managed small enterprises, receiving multiple recognitions for performance, and has helped over 200 individuals develop their business plans. His community involvement has been extensive, including serving as a Director and Sub-committee Chair with the Community Futures Development Corporation (Fraser-Fort George), Treasurer and Director of the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce for four years, and eight years as a Director of the Ladysmith Resources Centre. He was also President of the Ladysmith Rotary Club in 2005/2006 and served as Secretary for eight years, in addition to being a founding Director of the Ladysmith Senior Advisory Board for three years. Michael has lived in Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, since 2000 and stands by his professional motto: “My commitment to you is to act with the care and diligence of a reasonable and prudent person conducting his or her own financial affairs.”
