C17-52 Sexual Sovereignty in the age of Misogyny with Dr. Saida Désilets

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Dr. Saida Désilets, on air from December 25th

Dr. Saida Désilets on How Women Claim Theirs and Men Learn to Honor It Finding the Culture-Altering Collaborative Way Forward in a Highly-Charged Moment in History Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner, Louis CK and James Toback did not respect it. And the women who are now coming forward about their sexual abuse at the hands of these men are only now truly claiming it. “It” is their SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY—the right to control their own sexual and physical fate—not being subject to the demands, the whims, the control or the perversion of others.
“Do you realize that in no country in the world, nor even the United Nations Human Rights Charter, is there any stipulation that women have the rights to their own bodies,” says Dr. Saida Désilet, Ph.D. A thought-leader and speaker on the growing edge of researching ways women can use their minds, bodies, and spirits to create richer lives through their sensual selves, Saida serves as a guide to women who believe in transformation as a lifelong path of learning, discovery and walk to freedom.

But it was a violent rape that nearly cost Saida Désilets her life that put her on this path. Self-described as a “street-savvy, equipped with feisty farm-girl strength and the grace of a dancer,” she was by no means naïve. In fact, this French Canadian native was raised on a First Nation’s reservation in Manitoba where sexual abuse of children, teens and young women was common. Yet, despite seeing that openly, she never expected to be so violently attacked by a man she was actually dating. The shocking violation left her in such excruciating physical and emotional pain and damage that, upon waking up after emergency surgery, she was told she had only two weeks to live.
But live she did! “I chose to defy the surgeon’s diagnosis, and instead, chose to live. Life after the rape, after near-death, takes on a different quality,“ she says.” Either you become a shut-down, just-getting-by version of yourself or you suddenly feel like you’ve been given a new ticket on life. I felt the latter. My journey started in defiance. I defied death. I defied the badge of a victim. And I claimed myself in ways I never knew possible.”
After two decades of work with women on their sexuality and sensuality, a PhD, two books–plus one more on the way, and the development of a proven psycho-sexual method that is now being used in female medicine, she has come to recognize “that this journey, this coming home to ourselves, is an act of rebellion. Rebellion because women must defy their conditioning, their wounds, and the inertia of social mandates.”
Saida points to a quote from Hamash Alidina: ‘In a society that benefits from your self-doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act.’
“That’s how the term SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY emerged,“ she says. “It’s the full ownership of ourselves and our body and our sensual/sexual nature. It is knowing that no person, institution, organization or government has the right to choose what we do with our pleasure, sensuality, sexuality and fertility. That is ours alone to choose.”
And now the quest is how to usher in a new path that brings men and women into the right relationship with each other…where SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY is the cornerstone for both sexes, and is the foundation for building understanding, respect, compassion and strength. A world where physical or psychological oppression is no more. And #METOO isn’t necessary.
Saida speaks to all of this. Her vision is one of healing and growth for all. Most of all she wants women to feel at home in themselves, where they know they belong and that they matter—opening up new levels of freedom, joy, self-confidence and achievement.

C17-51 Who takes care of the caregivers? with Peter Rosenberger

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Peter Rosenberger, on air from December 19th

HOW DO YOU DO IT? HOW DO YOU NOT GET OVERWHELMED?

Peter Rosenberger, is an author of 7 Caregiver Landmines And How You Can Avoid Them AND Hope For The Caregiver: Encouraging Words To Strengthen Your Spirit.

“For an increasing number of families, the holidays result in stress, drama, and conflict as they gather together to celebrate. Many families are faced with the issues of ageing parents or loved ones who now have significant caregiving needs. With the massive baby-boomer population racing into their senior years, the conversation around many festive tables this year will turn to caregiving concerns.

In order to protect and cherish these family moments, here are four suggestions to navigating the holiday season, based on my experience as a caregiver for over 30 years.

As families — as caregivers — we can, and we must navigate through this journey with a calmer and more joyful heart, especially during the holidays. It’s hard to carve a turkey with clenched fists. I know, I’ve tried. Instead of rushing to grasp more drama, let’s slow down and appreciate the memories and small victories, while embracing the often overshadowed, but always present, beauty in life.

Let’s find happiness in knowing we protect the one thing standing between our loved one and even harsher challenges.

After all, it is the season of gratitude and joy.”

My Path to Becoming a Rabbi and a Writer

I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island in a family of six: my mom and dad, me, my sister, Sarina, and my two brothers Ari and Rafi. All I knew growing up was that women could not be rabbis, at least not in the Orthodox synagogue where my grandfather served as the rabbi, not at the Orthodox elementary school I attended and not in the traditional Conservative synagogue where I belonged, and where my father was the rabbi.

History records the first woman rabbi to be Regina Jonas of East Berlin, Germany who was ordained in 1935. In 1972, when I was 10, Sally Priesand became the first woman rabbi ordained in America’s Reform movement. l knew nothing about these women until much later in my life, and though I had no childhood aspiration to become a rabbi, I did imitate my father on the rare Sabbath mornings I did not go to synagogue. I convened a congregation of my stuffed animals. I sat them in a circle on my bedroom floor, placed prayer books in front of their faces, kippot on some of their heads, and I became both rabbi and cantor, leading services, chanting traditional melodies, announcing pages and, I believe, delivering an occasional sermon

My mission in my work, writing, and life is to bring people together; to enable all people (especially children, elders, and those who feel marginalized in our society) to be heard; to guide people to find meaning in their lives and to live into this meaning; to question the wrongs we encounter and to have the courage to change them; to do our best to right the wrongs we ourselves create; and to appreciate how each one of us is a precious and necessary gift that contributes to the larger whole of our world.

C17-47 Getting Your Groove Back in 2018 and Beyond with Lynnis

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and ‘Wellness Journey’ host Lynnis Woods Mullins, on air November 21st ‘

Getting Your Groove Back in 2018 and Beyond ….Reprogram, Reenergize, Reconnect Your Mind, Body, Spirit, and Soul

We often go into a new season of life with hope and expectations for the better.  Whether it’s  ringing in a New Year with a new resolution or ushering in another birthday with expected new goals, we all have great expectations.  We look forward to reenergizing, reconnecting and in some cases reprograming ourselves in a new way of thinking and doing that gives us purpose and self -awareness.  Much like the character Stella did in the movie “When Stella Got Her Grove Back”, we want to get our “groove back”  .  We want the opportunity to start thriving again, to start walking in our purpose, to feel that sense of optimism and joy that should come with the start of anything “new”

The reality is that we never really lost our groove in the first place.  In many cases, our “groove” has been buried in the disappointments of the past, the feeling of being overwhelmed and not knowing what to do next.  Our “groove” gets buried under years of new resolutions that never happened and Birthday goals that didn’t get achieved.

But the good news is that it is not too late.  It is not too late to reprogram our thought process, re-energize our efforts, and reconnect with our quest to fulfill and in some case find our personal legend – our life purpose.
