GV25-26. David Brown’s “Hard Rain”

Our Global Veterans with Sara Troy and her guest David Brown, on air from July 1st

Awarded Medals By Queen Elizabeth II For His 40  Years In The British Army, A Retired Major Pens A   Powerful War Novel Set In 1970s Northern Ireland

David Brown, a lifelong military man for the British Army, who received medals from Queen Elizabeth II for his bravery throughout a successful four-decade military career, has not had to fire a shot in many years. But all of the bloody battles fought in his lifetime live in his head, heart, and soul. He brings to life what it really felt like to fight the enemy, even when winning felt like losing. “There’s a heavy price to pay for peace on all sides of a conflict,” says Brown.

Brown has three novels out, each inspired by his military experiences that began for him at the tender age of 15. He left a household in poverty and dropped out of school to become a soldier. From 1969 to 1976, he witnessed and participated in fighting for Great Britain against the IRA uprising (or freedom fighters?) in Northern Ireland.

At just 15, he left home to join the British Army, driven by a deep sense of duty and a desire for purposes beyond the life he knew. Over a remarkable 40-year military career, he fought in numerous battles across the globe, witnessing both the chaos and camaraderie that only war can forge. His service was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II herself, who awarded him medals that now serve as quiet reminders of sacrifice and honor. The brutal reality of war left a lasting impression, compelling him to write three novels—fictionalized accounts drawn from the truth of his battlefield experiences. He speaks candidly about the visceral intensity of hand-to-hand combat, and the haunting paradox of feeling a deep, private respect for the very enemy he was trained to destroy. After retiring from the military, life shifted once again when he faced the profound loss of his wife to kidney failure. It was this heartbreak that prompted him to start anew, redefining purpose in a life now lived beyond the battlefield.

“Some may label me a killer, and they’d be right,” says Brown. Others would say I was a hero, and they would be right. But there will always be mixed feelings in reflecting back on a soldier’s scorecard. We can pray for peace and forgiveness – all while pulling the trigger to remove a life from this world — and the soldier must feel he did what had to be done while still questioning why he was there at all.”

David Brown has authored three novels, all military fiction inspired by decades of military service for England. His books are The Wolves of the Radfan, Hard Rain, and The Darkness. He served in the British Army for 40 years, dropping out of school to join the military at the age of 15. He left The St. George’s School in Cambridge and the impoverished neighbourhood dubbed The Kite. His household was so poor that he wore his sister’s hand-me-downs, his home lacked heating and hot water, and the bathroom was located outside of the gas-lit house.
Brown was awarded a BEM (British Empire Medal military division) and the MBE (Member of the British Empire medal military division) from Queen Elizabeth II. Between 1969 and 1976, he spent a good deal of time in Northern Ireland, serving with a top infantry regiment as both a platoon sergeant and later as a platoon commander.
Brown left the infantry for the elite Army Physical Training Corp and received a commission, eventually reaching the rank of Major.
He has traveled the world, living in over a dozen countries spanning four continents, including Hong Kong, Kenya, Germany, Canada, Yemen, Morocco, Libya, Gibraltar, Norway, Cyprus, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and numerous parts of England.
After leaving the military, he became a professional mountaineering instructor in Spain. He has climbed the Himalaya Mountains, the Andes Mountains, the European Alps, and other great heights.
Brown’s first wife died of kidney failure, but he found his faith in God again and remarried. Now 78 years old, he is retired and plays golf and produces a quarterly magazine called The Rock, for The Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy.

GV25-26. Dr Josh McConkey on Fatherhood

Our Global Veterans with Sara Troy and her guest Dr Josh McConkey, on air from July 1st

It is critical to highlight a growing crisis that’s often underreported and often ignored: the decline of strong, engaged fatherhood, and its impact on the future of our nation.

Dr. Josh McConkey, candidate for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, combat veteran, emergency physician, author, and dad of three kids, argues that restoring fatherhood is essential to reverse rising youth anxiety, fractured families, and weakened communities. His new book, ‘Be the Weight Behind the Spear, calls on men to re-embrace their role as present, purposeful fathers and leaders, both at home and in society.

Dr. McConkey brings a unique, boots-on-the-ground perspective. With experience leading soldiers in war zones and caring for patients on the front lines, Dr. McConkey is uniquely suited to provide a perspective on resilience and leadership. He’s seen what happens when young people lack guidance, and the impact when military dads come home from the battlefield to raise kids with discipline, resilience, and heart. He believes America’s healing starts with men who lead their families with strength, honor, and emotional presence. “Fatherhood is not optional — it’s foundational,” believes Dr. McConkey.

Be the Weight Behind the Spear is more than a book—it’s a mission to restore character, courage, and conviction in today’s fathers, sons, and mentors.

Military dads have a unique perspective on leadership that extends far beyond the battlefield. Their experiences teach us valuable lessons about leading with integrity, purpose, and calm under pressure — qualities that are just as vital at home as they are in combat. Communities can play a powerful role in supporting and inspiring men to show up with courage and compassion, creating spaces where vulnerability and strength walk hand in hand. By embracing practical steps to rekindle the American spirit of fatherhood — from active presence to emotional resilience — we strengthen not just our families, but the very fabric of our nation. There is a deep and undeniable link between fatherhood and national resilience; when fathers are empowered, connected, and engaged, the ripple effect is felt across generations. The battlefield may be far away, but the mission at home is just as vital, and the lessons learned in the service can guide us all toward stronger, more loving families.

Dr. McConkey’s credentials include:

  • Commander, 459th Aeromedical Staging Squadron at Andrews Air Force Base
  • Combat flight surgeon with 340+ flight hours (90 in combat zones)
  • Author of the award-winning book “Be the Weight Behind the Spear,” recently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize
  • Founder of The Weight Behind the Spear Foundation
  • Recently announced candidate for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina

GV25-01. Robert D. Hicks, WOUNDED FOR LIFE:

Our Global Veterans with Sara Troy and her guest Robert D. Hicks, on air from January 14th

Robert D. Hicks, PhD, former Director of the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia and author of WOUNDED FOR LIFE: Seven Union Veterans of the Civil War?

In this interview, he will talk about how this topic relates to those that are disabled today, including wounded veterans.

He also discusses the changing social circumstances of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and how that impacted the veterans. Wounded for Life is equal parts Civil War history, disability history and the history of the body. The collective experiences of the veterans profiled in the book show how they dealt with common expectations of manhood or masculine identity after the injuries.

Dr. Hicks will share insight into this era of history through humanizing the intimate lives of disabled veterans.

GV24-45. Colonel William Dunn, Middle East War.

Our Global Veterans with Sara Troy and her guest Colonel William Dunn, on air from November 5th

The Middle East powder keg, ignited by the Hamas terrorist’s bloody attack on Israel over a year ago, now appears ready to explode. Iran has launched over 180 missiles into Israel, pushing the entire Middle East closer to a regionwide war. Meanwhile, a ground offensive into Lebanon is underway. Israeli forces are following up their stunning attacks on Hezbollah terrorist’s pagers and walkie-talkies with deadly airstrikes on key Hezbollah strongholds. Israeli forces have effectively wiped out most of Hezbollah’s key leadership and a top leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran in July.

Marine Corps Colonel William “Burner Dun” ’flew dozens of combat missions in the world’s most dangerous hot spots including the Middle East during his three-decade military career. Dunn’s firm, Strategic Resilience Group, just had personnel in the war-torn region. He can offer us easy-to-understand insight and analysis into this latest escalation in the war-torn region, including:

This latest escalation highlights the complex and volatile situation in the Middle East, with the potential for significant regional and global consequences.

The intensifying violence in the Middle East could lead to a broader conflict, potentially pulling in neighboring nations and risking a regional war that could strain alliances, disrupt peace efforts, and even require intervention from major powers, raising the stakes for global involvement. Although Americans may be geographically distant, they are closely tied to the region due to diplomatic relations, military alliances, and economic interests, particularly in energy. Understanding the conflict’s implications is crucial, as it could impact U.S. foreign policy, affect domestic energy prices, and shape national security and humanitarian response efforts. Additionally, the estimated one million Lebanese civilians displaced by the violence may seek refuge in nearby countries and Europe, placing pressure on infrastructure, economies, and resources, highlighting the need for international aid and resettlement support. While peace efforts continue, historical tensions and active foreign interests suggest that an all-out regional war remains a possibility, making diplomatic intervention, including potential U.N. peacekeeping efforts, essential to preventing further escalation.

Understanding these dynamics is critical for Americans, as they underscore how deeply interconnected global stability is with regional conflicts like this one.

ES24-32. Norma Burnson, Veterans for Earth

Eco Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Norma Burnson, on air from August 6th

“Together we can keep Mother Earth vibrant and alive.”

Norma says that she joined the U.S. Navy 10 days after my 18th birthday.
Boot camp took place in Orlando, Florida. Eight weeks later, my first tour of duty was at the Naval base in Rota, Spain. It was the beginning of my freedom, and total happiness.
I met my husband, Kevin. We have been together 50 years, and have never been separated since.
We traveled throughout Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany, Gibraltar, Morocco, Japan, Taiwan, enjoyed a lovely cruise around the Caribbean, and visited Mexico as well.
Upon returning to the States, I used my G.I. Bill, and attended the University of Illinois at Chicago. I was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest ( date) and most prestigious honor society in the United States. Then I spent a few years taking classes at The Art Institute of Chicago.
From there I worked as an International Trade Specialist, involved with the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, spearheading seminars. In addition was head of the membership committee for the International Association of Greater Chicago and
WIT, Women in International Trade.
Amongst other rewards, I was honored to receive The International Women’s Leadership Association, in recognition for my contribution to Family – Career – Community, recognized as a Woman of Outstanding Leadership.

In the early 90’s, I established my own company. My work consisted of setting up the International Trade Department for manufacturing companies. Either in house or off site.
I had the great opportunity to teach a class on International Trade at Oakton Community College for 8 years.
This was when my health began to deteriorate, and I received the diagnosis of congestive heart failure, on top of chronic asthma.
Confined in bed, (30 years) I used my time painting, needlepoint and reading. One day, out of the blue, I received an invitation from Sir Richard Branson to participate in a zoom meeting.
Sir Branson had invited entrepreneurs from all around the world to work on Plan B, because Plan A was leading us towards non sustainable practices.
Stuck in bed, I realized I could help the cause by writing, and that way become an active participant working towards Plan B.
That is when Sustainable Food for the Globe came to be. To date I have participated in the MIT Solve Lab Challenge Team Leader (2016, 2017), authored 8 books, and have 3 other projects in the making, including The Sustainable Food for the Globe Foundation.
In addition I got involved with the Global Citizens Circle. Since Sustainable Food for the Globe’s inception, I have met movers and shakers from around the world. All sharing their advocacy of healing Mother Earth, and working for the better good of all.
Sustainable Food for the Globe champions food production, food security, rescuing wasted food, and food deserts.
Due to my fragile health we left Chicago and moved to the country. During the last 6 years, my health has improved, slowly but steadily. Currently, my health issues are Asthma, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, congestive heart failure, kidney deterioration, anxiety attacks, PTSD, insomnia, nightmares, night frights, and cold sweats.

That being said, all my body of work is conducted via an iPa, and an iPhone.
Bedridden, I enjoy working with over 5,000 colleagues and friends from all around the world.
There is one thing that infuriates me, it is when a person falls into the helplessly hopeless, “Someone should do something!” As civilly as possible, my response is “You are somebody, do something!”
There are so many resources available, just by doing a Google search, one can research thousands of topics, find and get in touch with people and organizations that are already working on fixing these problems.
It is a fact that for every problem we are facing on Mother Earth, there is a solution. Unfortunately the very powerful corporations around the world make sure to hide these solutions, especially if that solution hurts their bottom line.
What do I believe?

1) “Together we can keep Mother Nature vibrant and alive”,

2) “A lion is like the truth, all things being equal, set it free and it will pretty much take care of itself”, and the most important of my convictions,

3) A lion is born to face death everyday, fear is not an option.”
Sara, thank you for inviting me for an interview, it is truly an honor.
