16/15 Children of Mixed Race.

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy aired April 12th/15

I married a Chinese guy much to my mothers horror, and although we are not together any more we have 3 incredible children to be thankful for. Yes they are mixed, does that mean any thing? Not to me, I see them in all their divine beauty and in unison of races only builds a broader future.

Today I will share my perspective on mixed race children and the whole race divide. Please read the story my mother wrote when my oldest was born.

My mother who was British  and raised in Indian with a father who was a  Colonel in the British army, was bought up to believe that no race should have mixed children. This is her letter to my first born child of mixed race, Tabytha.

20160401_143847

My Mother Wrote.

When I was young my father said “In all the books I have read it was considered very best that the East should never mate with the West.” Now I am older and alone the oracle is one of my own, I feared to say the very least taking the hand one from the East.

When my golden girl with East did mate I mourned within for this unknown fate of my father’s words, that he knew best.

As I waited the result of East and West betwixt with pain and joy, I tried to prepare to take into my heart the child that was near.

That day dawned and away went fear, my heart overflowed the child was here.

From my head the old words returned, but I had a lesson learned.

That East and Wests love conquers fear, as in my arms they put you there.

Two pairs of eyes, Blue and Black filled pride they could not hold back. I looked at the link that came from this pair and my heart opened wide with such love for her.

We joined in rejoicing over one so dear, this black haired doe eyes rosy Tabytha.

To Tabytha from Grandmother Joanne North with Love.

If not around when you are grown you will never be alone, for I will watch over you and guide you path of truth.

Tabytha is now 33 and her Grandmama past, Tabytha is loved deeply as was the 2 more children Tyler and Natasha that came from this marriage.

Tabytha shares her view on growing up of mixed race.

12642612_10156527142695581_5139872355156635349_nGrowing up as mixed in the 80’s I was marked as “yellow”. I was too young to understand other cultures, or that I am half Chinese, half British. I did dream of having blue eyes like my Mother though…. As I grew older mixed culture was part of every day life, our friends were Italian, Western, Chinese, Japanese, East Indian,  African…..we saw more people in Canada, especially in B.C. be of mixed race, not even just immigrants but black and white couples, Latino and European kids etc. We knew no difference we were all just kids.

I’m very glad I was raised by different multiculturalism. I even joke today that if I ever get married, I hope to have mixed children myself, one day -well, maybe-if I marry, so that they get the best of 2 or 3 worlds: My brother and sister and I were born in BC Canada with ‘North American’ ways, with a Chinese father and British mother. Tea time with Earl grey after school with scones, then Chow mien for supper (different in Europe, actually tea time is supper but anyway), let’s just call it dinner then, followed by oolong Chinese tea.

The world is a vast place, but it can also be a small world. Everyone should be able to live harmoniously and enjoy what each culture can bring. Racism is weak, for people who are afraid. Imagine never having pizza or tacos or sushi or listening to old blues or having different art and music and language influences? Pretty boring huh. Thanks Mom and Dad for making us not a majority of white kids in a Canadian city.

Glad it has changed today and has become more acceptable to be different. SEE ME FOR WHO I AM.

Tyler says that he never saw the difference, he was Tyler, he has many friends of mixed race to this day and he does not see skin colour but who they are from the inside out.

Natasha says

12507514_944550458985718_5131672297468014824_n

“Not being able to identify with one particular culture. Made it difficult to place my self somewhere. And was perhaps the provider for my inability to find attachments to things throughout my life. But I’m not sure that’s a bad thing; I don’t feel apart of any one category. And though that can be confusing, it’s also allowed me freedom to be whatever I feel I need to be in that moment.”

TSM16/14 VASS: DISABLED to ABLE on the Mountain with Anne Bethune

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Anne Bethune aired April 5th/16

VASScup-mar-13-2014-DRM-0636-email-1000x400

Anne Bethune has been living in Vancouver, BC, since she moved from Ontario in 1986 after graduating from Queen’s University in Occupational Therapy.  She arrived in BC with a budding career path as an Occupational Therapist (OT) and a passion/expertise for adaptive recreation.   As a young girl, Anne took on leadership roles as a camp counsellor, ski instructor, sailing instructor and leader in her school student council and athletics, including class valedictorian.

28 years ago, Anne brought with her to BC her extensive experience teaching sailing to people with disabilities in Ontario and the Caribbean, and she quickly stepped into her leadership in Vancouver, matched energy with Sam Sullivan, to hatch what is now the Disabled Sailing Association of BC at Jericho Sailing Center.  At this time, Anne worked at Shaughnessy Hospital as an OT with survivors of traumatic spinal cord injury while teaching skiing at our Cypress, Grouse and Whistler Mountains.  Anne combined her passion for the adaptive sport and her love of ski teaching and began her years of volunteering as an instructor for Disabled Skier Association of BC at Grouse Mountain – the roots of what we now know as Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports.

Her career shifted to working in community-based practice as an Occupational Therapist with survivors of traumatic brain injuries and complex orthopaedic injuries for 12 years followed by work with North Shore Health – Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

Anne’s leadership and influence within the adaptive skiing world ignited quickly and she has become known as a leader not only within our local community but with our national organization CADS (Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers) as a CADS Examiner and globally with her involvements with the International Paralympic Committee as an IPC Alpine Skiing Classifier.  She has been involved on many committees locally and globally in the adaptive sports world.

In addition to Anne’s volunteer work, Anne has a successful home-based global business in the health and wellness industry with Isagenix International and has impacted the lives of thousands of people with her expertise/passion for people and health.  She has solutions for Weight Loss, Energy, Performance, Healthy Ageing and Wealth Creation.

In addition to her volunteer and work activities, Anne has the proud mother of three thriving teen boys and has nurtured their passions for music, sport and outdoor recreation.  Her youngest has been a singer in the BC Boys Touring Choir and passionate about outdoors/ leadership as youth camp leader, her middle son is focused on an elite level hockey path and her oldest son is a gifted singer/songwriter/guitar player.

The name Bethune may sound familiar – indeed, Anne’s  descendant was Dr. Norman Bethune, the famous Canadian physician and international humanitarian – proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Anne is here to talk with us today about her work with adaptive sport and healthy living and how her passions truly do impact lives for the better

PLV16/14 The Living Wonderment of Children’s books.

Positive Vibrations Roundtable with Sara Troy and her guests Barrett Clemmensen Powell  and Dawattie Basdeo aired April 5/16

Children’s books invite imagination and that is the very seeding of possibilities that creates future opportunities. Both of my guests write from their inner child’s wonderment.

 Barrett Clemmensen Powell

10556334_10154140271037216_8609393002824442717_nSince releasing “Lori Leak Travels to Paris” I have been sharing it across the Internet and using to engage in conversations on-line and in local groups, about empowering girls. Lori Leak was published just before the 1000 Black Girl Books movement, which sparked attention to the lack of children’s literature featuring female heroines and role models for Black girls. This is an important conversation, globally. Currently, I am busy introducing the Lori Leak to libraries and classrooms in Denmark where I am residing right now. “Lori Leak Travels to Paris” is being used to teach English to 4th through 6th grade Danish children.

Barrett’s previous show with me.

The second book is being created and is titled “Lori Leak Travels to Copenhagen”.

Founder of Holistic World Ltd

dawattie-photoI founded Holistic World with the vision of opening Holistic World centers globally. The mission of the centers being that to provide a modern day sanctuary on the high street for the mind  body and soul. Stemming from my wish to provide inspiration and good well-being for my children and children all over the world I had the idea to write a series of children ’s yoga books which children could read and enjoy individually or as an adult.    The aim of the Magnificent Me, Magnificent You series is to highlight to children the many wonderful qualities they have within and also the amazing beauty and power of the natural world.

Each book in the series has an adventure based around a Natural Wonder of the world along with lots of fun activities to inspire mind, body, and soul. My inspiration and ideas for the books have been drawn from my own personal life experiences such as running up Table Mountain, swimming with turtles in the sea, doing fire walks, giving birth to my children plus lots more.

16/13 Seniors & Grand Parenting.

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy airs from March 29th-

ce8b6c4240282a7a_92035897.preview

I am a senior in some places, and not quite there in others (age 65-70 to be a senior), but I am acknowledging that I am over that ledge of middle age tilting towards the other side.

I am 61 years young, I have 3 wonderful children ages from 27-33 and not one marriage or grand child yet. I have grand puppies, 4 of them and believe me they can be a handful, but I have no idea when I will hold a Grand Child in my arms.

I have friends older than me who also have no sign of a grand-kids yet, they will be in their 70’s when they become a Grand Parent and the question we ask is ,are we going to be energetic enough for them when they do finally arrive?

I am a struggler, story teller, nurturer, love the walks swims the drives, but have never been able to run with my kids never mind grand-kids. I have always had health issues that got in my way of physically living it up, don’t get me wrong, I have lived it up, I danced, and danced, but I was young and even limited then, now those limits are more and a daily challenge.

So will I have that energy to play with the grandchildren? Will I have the patience with their exuberant energy? And in waiting so long to have children was that a mistake?

This is what I will talk about this week on the show, for in today’s world there are so many children waiting to have their children, which I agree on, for children are for life and you must be ready, but it also means being an older Grand Parent and one must think on that too.

C16/12a “Gabriel’s Journey” with Nora Rose

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Nora Rose aired from March 22nd on.

IMG_0084Nora Rose is a teacher, author, speaker and coach.  Her current book titled “Gabriel’s Journey” is about an 18 year old boy who leaves his family in Naples, Italy to travel by boat to the United States in 1920.  This story is based off the actual life of her grandfather Gabriel Iovino.  After his brother died in WW1 he had a desire to go to America to begin a new life.

Nora Rose grew up in Chicago, Illinois.   She attended St.Bartholomew grade school and Notre Dame High School for Girls.  She went to college in Evanston, IL for her B.A. degree and became a teacher.  She was a teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes in Chicago and then Evanston Illinois District 65. She was also a teacher at B.J. Hooper School in Lindenhurst Illinois for 1st and 3rd grade.  She went on to get her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National College of Education.  At this time she moved with her husband to Wisconsin and raised three daughters.  She started  a child care center name Roots & Wings which she owned and operated for 22 years.  When her children were young she brought them to work with her.  Many years later she went back to college at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a communication degree.  She started substitute teaching and wrote a book titled The Story-Telling Cottage in 1997.  She was in the process of rewriting this book to make it better when a whole new book evolved as Gabriel’s Journey.

In 2010 she was caring for her mother who had diabetes, hernias and a weak heart. In 2014, her mother died and Nora had a difficult time grieving over the loss of her mother and her business.  At this time she also lost her business.  Her whole life changed.  To learn how to think more clearly and better,   she went to a one year workshop with the Canfield Training team and Jack Canfield to become a certified Life Coach.  Where she learned many tools and techniques to help people create a better life. She included a picture of Jack Canfield on the back cover with herself to show readers that teachers and mentors want you to learn new ideas and concepts to make your life better.  Nora believes learning is a lifelong process.  We are always looking for new teachers as we grow and change throughout life.

This inspiring story encourages readers to believe in their dreams and to connect with their own family history.  All families started somewhere and it’s interesting conversation to find out from where and how they got here.  The book includes beautiful illustrations to enhance the adventure.

timthumbPartnering with an illustrator who listened to her vision then created it was truly a magical experience.  It was just as much fun to create the illustrations as it was to write the story.  She absolutely loves the illustrations!

She also did many hours of research in the archives of Ellis Island in New York to include original documents from Ellis Island  in the book.  When students learn that she had to do extensive research before writing this story they are in awe.  I was teaching a 5th grade class how to do research for an assignment and after we were done with the lesson I took out my book to share with them.  It made it real for them.  To see how their substitute teacher did research and wrote a book from it made then realize that this is possible for them to do.  Real people write books not just people in hollywood or famous people.  They were very inspired.

In the back of the book Nora included how to make a vision board so readers can create one of their own to help reach a goal they might have.  She also included a passport activity so readers can make a passport to think about where in the world they would like to travel.
