Jolandie Rust – affectionately known as Jo, is a 30 year old South African adventurer, who continues to push the envelope. She is the 1st woman in history to circumnavigate the entire African continent solo on her trusty motorbike – no back-up, no support team, covering 45 000 kilometers through 28 countries over a period of 18 months !

In 2008 she cycled through South Africa from Johannesburg to Cape Town. In 2010 she became the first person to have cycled around South Africa, covering a total distance of 5 951 kilometers in exactly 100 days. In 2011 she cycled from Cape Town to a town called N’Zeto in northern Angola before having to return home as a result of an armed robbery and which incident changed the course of her future in a positive way.

Jo now shares her story with people all over the world, motivating and inspiring others to overcome their own fears and live their biggest dreams !

14/38 HEARTBEAT HIV Orphans in South Africa

Prof Sunette Pienaar is a Social Entrepreneur, Compassionate Caregiver and the Founder and Executive Chairperson of Heartbeat, a nurturing NGO, which she started in 2000.

Heartbeat is set on empowering orphans and vulnerable children to reach their full potential, through quality service provision, development and capacity building, to be responsible leaders of the future by providing them all with educational material, health and social services.

prof-sunette-pienaar-steyn-profile-1The Mission of Heartbeat is that it dreams of all children in Africa being happy and having opportunities to fulfil their dreams. The ultimate goal is to develop sustainable communities with the capacity to care for and protect the rights of these youth and their families.

In 2004 it was estimated that 12 million children had already lost one or both parents due to HIV globally and that by 2010 that number would increase to 18 million children. According to a research paper in 2011 on the state of the South African Family, a total of 3.95 million children had lost one or both parents by 2008, an increase of about a third since 2002 and it is estimated that by 2015, some 5.7 million children would have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
Since inception, Heartbeat has reached close to 50 000 orphans and vulnerable children  through direct and indirect interventions. These include child-headed households, granny-headed households and potential orphans living with terminally ill parents.

Rod Suskin and catRod Suskin, a white Sangoma, from Cape Town, South Africa, is the author of 4 published books and is also a professional Astrologer. His Astrology School teaches an internationally recognized Diploma course in professional astrology, which is also available on line.

Rod was initiated as a Swazi Sangoma in 1982 at the age of 19 and, since living in the Cape, he has furthered his study of African healing and spiritual traditions under the guidance of Xhosa healers. He believes Astrology is a powerful diagnostic tool and guide for the herbal practitioner.

He lectures extensively around South Africa on a variety of metaphysical subjects and also presented at the Parliament of World Religions in 1999. He has also lectured in the UK and the USA on astrology and African spirituality.

14/35 LISA CHAIT – South African stories

Airing September 2nd-8th on Inspiring South Africans with Heather de Wit and her guest

Lisa Chait, who is a Broadcast Journalist, spent almost 16 years in radio, first presenting news and LISA holding babya weekend music show on Cape Town’s Good Hope FM and 10 of those years as a Host on Cape Talk 567FM.

Some years ago, for 6 consecutive years, she also lived on a tower for 10 days and nights at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town, raising over R1.2 million (approx $94,000 US dollars) for the prevention of child abuse.

In 2009 Lisa presented ‘I Am Woman Leap of Faith’ a formidable South African television series, which features the lives and Leaps of Faith of 52 remarkable women exploring how they stepped into brand new territory when faced with life’s greatest challenges – see Link below.

With her current project, a video television series ‘It’s Africa’s time’, Lisa believes that Africa is indeed the new frontier. The series is taking her all over Africa into the lives, different cultures and business models in Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, Liberia, Mauritania, Senegal, Kenya, Botswana, Mocambique and Zambia.

More recently Lisa founded a unique family heritage video, audio and written memories project called Life Stories, which sees her interviewees talking across time to future generations, whom they will never meet.
