14/29 Dance for ALL

Aired July 22nd on Inspiring South Africans with Heather de Wit and her guest Philip Boyd who was born in Cape Town and educated in Johannesburg at the National School of the Arts.

Philip Boyd of DANCE for ALL

He trained at the UCT Ballet School from 1974 – 1976. After completing his 2 year National Service, he joined CAPAB Ballet Company in 1979.

He became a Principal dancer in 1980 in his debut performance of ‘Albrecht’ in the ballet ‘Giselle’ dancing opposite Nicolette Loxton. Boyd danced all the major principal roles with CAPAB Ballet for 23 years during his career with the company.

In 1991 Boyd decided to pass on his knowledge and experience he had gained from his professional career to underprivileged children through developing an Outreach Programme called Ballet for All.

This changed its name to Dance for All in 1995 incorporating all other forms of dance, including African Dance, Contemporary Dance and Classical Ballet and Spanish Dance. This work expanded to the areas of Langa, Nyanga and Khayelitsha.

In 2002 Boyd ended his association with what they had become known as Cape Town City Ballet and officially became the Artistic Director of Dance for All and in 2008 was appointed as Chief Executive Officer.

Through his positive leadership and energy in promoting dance in the Western Cape, Boyd has taken the organisation to new heights and through his vision and mission, the demographics of SA dance companies have been transformed, as students who have been trained by Dance for All, are now working as professional dancers both locally and abroad.

Dance for All’s Outreach Programmes have also expanded in the Western Cape Rural Areas of Montagu and Barrydale.

Through spearheading cultural development in these and other disadvantages areas Dance for All has become a role model for other such initiatives and they currently have over 1500 children in their Outreach programmes.

In 2010 Boyd launched the Dance for All InSPIRAtions Youth Company in memory of Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Phyllis Spira (OMSG) who Boyd was married to.

14/28 Dream Worker

Aired July 15th to July 21st on Inspiring South Africans with Heather de Wit and her guest Tania Bownes co Founder DreamWorker

Tania Bownes head and shoulders photoTania Bownes is the co-founder, together with her husband, Ronald, DreamWorks. DreamWorker is an employment facilitation NGO, based in Cape Town, with satellite offices elsewhere in South Africa. It was set up to help the unemployed in the lower end of the economic spectrum find work. People like gardeners, drivers, domestic workers, artisans and more.

Tania has enjoyed a varied and involved career, from an early beginning in advertising and marketing to a lifelong, passionate interest in a range of healing modalities. She is a Nia teacher of some 11 years and is qualified in aromatherapy, reflexology, reiki, TRE (tension and trauma release) and more. Her voluntary work is at hospice, where she has worked for 13 years as a touch therapist.

Says Tania – “The many years spent in advertising and marketing, my one on one body therapies and group involvement, whether teaching Nia classes, holding retreats or doing group TRE, has been the best framework for my work at DreamWorker.

Our focus is on people who desperately need help to find work. I am able to write newsletters, prepare copy for adverts and market our NGO on the one hand, yet connect deeply with people on the other. DreamWorker has brought my many interests together.

Long-term, I dream that DreamWorker is able to expand further throughout South Africa. And beyond that, it is to see the people of this beautiful country self-employed and self empowered, so that we no longer even need employment facilitation !”

P14/25b Celebrating South Africa’s People Today

Aired June 26th/14 on Positive Living Vibrations with Sara Troy and her guest Heather de Wit.

Who are the people making a difference in South Africa today?  We call on all South Africans in or out of South Africa to join us in celebrating those making a difference in S.A and the world.

Africa is where it all started – It is the solar plexus of the planet Earth, the Cradle of Humankind and it needs to heal before the planet can move on to the next level of consciousness

Says Heather: ‘Africa is where it all started – It is the solar plexus of the planet Earth, the Cradle of Humankind and it needs to heal before the planet can move on

People need to heal in order to inspire, be inspired and be inspiring!

I am fuelled to pursue my purpose, my identity, my authenticity, the dream for my life, by paying attention to, following and researching inspiring people that are ‘doing it’ and why not keep it local?

It’s high time for all South Africans to take their power back as a people, to rise, to shine, to truly embrace our uniqueness, to support our great local people and our very own slogan – ‘Local is lekka and our very own thing called ‘Ubuntu. ‘

For too long now, South Africans and Business have had a conditioned mindset and accepted utilising the dominating global imports at huge prices and going outside for specialist training, when we have equally capable people right here on our own turf.

It’s a mindset that needs to change and change for the greater good is a grand thing …                                                                                                                                                      HOUT BAY

Me, myself, I am the founder and owner of “Inspiring South Africans” – which was created to 647737honour the legacy of our belated and beloved Nelson Mandela.

I spent my former years in Gauteng and relocated to Cape Town in 1976.

I would describe myself as an ‘out there’ creative, whose fierce spirit at times needs to be reigned in, I have to confess …

I’m a curious seeker of the truth in all things. Nothing is ever as it seems. I find this fascinating.

I would describe myself as an ‘out there’ creative, whose fierce spirit at times needs to be reined in. I have to confess, I’m a curious seeker of the truth in all things.

I have thrived as an Entrepreneur in ‘The Republic of Hout Bay’ for 30 odd years, striving always on the ability to serve, in both
my business and personal endeavours.
