Death Midwifery

 CINDEA‘s definition of Death Midwifery

In the simplest sense, a modern-day death midwife is a facilitator, who offers a continuum of direct and integrated guidance and support to the death journeyer and their family throughout a personalized and participatory pan-death process.Although traditionally this role was considered women’s work, today men also serve as death midwives (as they also do as birth midwives). The CINDEA definition seeks to honour and parallel the role of a birth midwife — while acknowledging that the comparable aspects of a death midwife’s role to the medical side of a birth midwife’s responsibilities are presently offered by palliative care nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, etc.

Have you ever had a friend or relative die, and wished you could have kept them at home for a day or two, to take care of the body yourself and say your farewells without pressure?   In fact, you can.

Caring for your deceased loved one at home is simpler than it may seem, but certain tasks(including the filing of paperwork) do need to be done at specific times.   Embalming is usually not necessary, and in most places there is no legal requirement to make use of a funeral home.

CINDEA is a Canadian-based organization, which respects the wisdom of ancient death traditions and encourages the renewal of older death practices that are appropriate to our modern-day life.   In the past, communities cared for their own dying folk; and creatively adapted, that approach to death is still an option available to us.   CINDEA ‘s perspective is one of a wide range of initiatives that are drawing our culture into a deeper relationship with nature and the cycles of life and death — the modern version of “a good death” for all involved in it.

We are committed to the unfolding development of the wholistic pan-death movement, including the roles and practices of alternative deathcare.   Clarification of these roles, and what they are called, is in its infancy — therefore, we have offered definitions of several alternative deathcare roles, and we support the networking of various kinds of end-of-life practitioners.   Our site also provides comprehensive dying and death resources — some conventional, though mostly focused on those that are less well-known.

Pashta MaryMoon is a mother and grandmother, living in Victoria, B.C. Canada.    She spent her youth as a social activist and non-violence trainer, and teaching music in elementary schools.   Later, she obtained a Honours degree in World Religions (Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), followed by a lay seminary degree (Unity Institute Spiritual Education and Enrichment in Missouri) — as well as training in sexual abuse and general counselling, and working in a Sexual Abuse centre as a volunteer counsellor (where she also dealt with incest and attempted murder cases).    With a life-long special interest in the dying process, she visited Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s Shanti Nilaya center in the late 1970s; and as part of her university degree, wrote several essays on the effect of modern death practices on our attitudes towards life.

GV 18-40 The Impact Echo in Ramadi has made with Scott Huesing.

Our Global Veterans with Sara Troy and her guest Scott Huesing, on air October 2nd

Scott is back with us to share the overwhelming response to his book  Echo in Ramadi where he shares his combat journey and in how it has impacted those that have heard him and read the book. Come hear my last show with Scott here.

Scott A. Huesing is a retired United States Marine Corps Infantry Major with 24 years of honorable service, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. During his career spanning 10 deployments, he operated in over 60 countries worldwide. Throughout his numerous deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions.                                                                                                                              Scott is a published author since 2005. His book, Echo in Ramadi, is a ten-month snapshot in time that changed the face of operations on the battlefield; a captivating story of Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines during the Second Battle of Ramadi in support of the Multi National Forces (MNF) Surge Strategy in 2006. His true-life account provides keen insights into what may be an unfamiliar world to readers, but very familiar to those, like Scott, who lived it and endured this historic fight. Echo in Ramadi was written to honor the sacrifices and spirit of his Marines and the families they supported – it is his tribute to them and his honor to tell this great story. Readers will feel the pain, emotion, laughter, intensity, and friction that Scott describes in unvarnished detail.

RAISING AWARENESS FOR

VETERAN SUICIDE ONE MILE AT A TIME

On Friday July 22nd, Major Scott A. Huesing USMC (Ret), the Bestselling Author of Echo in Ramadi is riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle across the country again for Save the Brave (STB) to raise awareness for Veteran Suicide. Huesing (51), the Executive Director of Save the Brave (501c3) began this ride in 2020 to honor his high school friend and veteran, David W. White (aged 48), who died from alcohol poisoning on Sunday, June 7, 2020, in Butte, Montana. Huesing will ride from Bastards Canteen in Temecula, California to Palmetto Brewing Company in Charleston, South Carolina.

During the 9-day journey, Huesing will make several stops to ask supporters to donate to STB and ride along with him on his journey to raise awareness for veteran suicide – emphasizing that these are not statistics anymore, they are friends and sons and brothers that we all know. He’ll be joined by fellow veterans and riders from every state he passes through amidst the heat of July. Their goal – $100,000.

When asked, “Why did you pick July to make this ride?” Huesing responded, “I didn’t pick the month – the month picked me. If nothing else, it’s a reminder to everyone who joins me along the way that maybe we need to suffer a little bit to be reminded exactly why we are riding.” Veterans dealing with depression, alcohol abuse, and PTSD are especially impacted by the isolation this pandemic has caused in many cases.

This is a unique opportunity to stay connected as veterans and as communities while supporting a worthwhile charity.

18-40 Turning 64 and Much More to DO

Sara Troy on Sara’s View of Life, on air from October 2nd

Turning 64, is it just another number or meaning something different?

I am turning 64 October 6th, when I was young I did not see myself where I am today, but what did I know of life’s journey at that point, not much. When your young you think 64 is ancient, but I remember meeting people and admiring them at this age, who they were, what they had achieved, and it made me happy to gather the  years of wisdom and not be afraid of growing older.

It is only when your here that you truly understand all the strife and struggles it has taken to get here and in gathering all that wisdom. Yet, we also see it as a gift, to be here, still to have choices, still to be active, and still to have many more years of wisdom gathering ahead of us.

Would I like to have more things in place? yes, would I like to have someone to share it with? yes, would I like to be stable? yes, but I am not finished and all have that is still achievable if I want it.

So role on 64, let us see what you have in store for me, for I have a lot to ask of you a lot to achieve this 64th year, so let’s get to it and gather more wisdom to share and gather life love and purpose under my belt.
