AK23-35. Karen Michaelson, The Maenad’s God

An Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Karen Michalson, on air from August 29th

Masterful Psychological Thriller Explores Murder,  Art, Mythology, Romance, Spirituality & Rebellion
Karen Michalson talks about:

  • Why readers love a literary thriller that draws from magical realism, 1990s rock ‘n’ roll, myth, and romantic suspense
  • Why her book centers around a spiritual war that’s been fought for thousands of years
  • How the research she did to create her musician characters led her to study music, form a band, and tour around the USA
  • Why the book is set in the early 1990s – before the Internet, cell phones, or 24/7 streaming
  • Whether practicing criminal defense law later influenced her decision to release the book, which explores themes surrounding the law
  • Why she chose to leave a hard-won tenure-track position teaching British literature to write fiction

The Maenad’s God explores a variety of thorny topics:

  • Alienation. Why some people are cynical and ‘done with society’
  • The nature of divinity; creativity as a way into some kind of higher reality; imagination as a sacred space
  • How creativity is an art of rebellion – and a healing force
  • The degree to which reality and fantasy inform each other
  • Whether creating a private world is a subversive act against a toxic culture

“Michalson’s prose, as narrated by the loquacious Pete, is by turns wisecracking and obsessive. . .. Even so, Pete’s quest takes him in unexpected occult directions, opening up an intricate world of ecstasy and paranoia. … the novel’s angst and atmosphere-both authentically ’90s-make for a strangely alluring reading experience. An engaging, snaking, and spirit-tinged murder tale about obsession and control.” Kirkus Reviews

TheMaenad’s God receives 5 stars and the ‘Highly Recommended’ award of excellence.” —The Historical Fiction Company Chosen by Independent Book Review as one of the best books of 2022, Karen Michalson’s fourth novel, The Maenad’s God, is the story of a war that’s been fought for thousands of years, the war between the ancient arts of music, poetry, and love; and the equally ancient forces of artistic envy, oppressive law, and authoritarian religion. Boston 1992. Alienated FBI agent Pete Morrow discovers a murder and becomes obsessed with Jade McClellan, a mysterious mafia-backed rock musician. Tough-guy Morrow has never been in love before—but Jade is almost magical, creating a private imaginary world from his songs and stories that rapidly become the only thing Morrow values in his otherwise empty life.  Unfortunately, Morrow is investigating the mafia family that is investing in Jade’s musical career. Being open about their relationship could get both of them killed.

Michalson, who has taught nineteenth-century British literature, performed across the USA with her rock band, Point of Ares, and runs a criminal defense practice, is uniquely suited to write this book. “If you like hard boiled gritty realism with an edge of surrealism – you will like this book,” promises the author. “If you like rock band fiction, stories about the mafia and the music business, or ever engaged in any kind of creative pursuit, you will like this book. If you like romantic suspense, particularly if it involves complex multi-dimensional characters whose conflicts with society extend beyond their relationship, you will like this book.” “The Maenad’s God is never the same book twice: flowing from intrigue to mysticism, romance to mythology, Karen Michalson weaves an epic and constantly surprising narrative.” IndieReader The Maenad’s God deserves attention. . . . it also deserves the highest rating, for it seems to me a work of substance and original thinking.” Reedsy “ . . . gripping, satisfying, and impossible to put down even after you’ve finished it.” Readers’ Favorite

Karen Michalson has assumed many identities – criminal defense attorney, scholar and teacher of nineteenth-century British literature, and progressive rock band performer. All her experiences find a home in her writings as an award-winning, critically acclaimed author. She has written four novels, including The Maenad’s God, which was selected by Independent Book Review as one of the best novels 2022 and by IndieReader as one of the Best Reviewed Books of March 2023. It also received a 5-Star Highly Recommended Award of Excellence from The Historical Fiction Company and a Literary Titan Gold Book Award (2022). Her earlier novels form the Enemy Glory Trilogy: Enemy Glory, Hecate’s Glory, and The King’s Glory. Enemy Glory, the first book of the trilogy, was one of the books that received the most votes for the Locus Award for Best First Novel. It was chosen for Locus’s Recommended Reading List of Best First Novels. Michalson’s first book, a non-fiction work, Victorian Fantasy Literature’s Literary Battles with Church and Empire, examines the non-literary and non-aesthetic reasons underlying the bias in favor of realism in forming the traditional literary canon of nineteenth-century British fiction. Her books have been favorably reviewed by Clarion ForewordKirkus ReviewsPublishers WeeklyIndependent Book ReviewLiterary TitanBlue Ink Review, and numerous others. Michalson practiced criminal law for a decade. She left the law profession a little over four years ago to return to her full-time novel-writiPh.D.full-timeBefore. Prior to what she calls her “detour into law,” she wrote novels, formed a progressive rock band, Point of Ares (she plays bass guitar), and ran a small record label-distributor (Arula Records). Point of Ares released four CDs, two of which are concept albums based on her Enemy Glory books. The band received airplay in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Brazil, and Italy and what she calls “embarrassingly kind reviews.” Before rocking out on music and fiction writing, she began her literary career as an assistant professor of English at the University of Connecticut. She holds a PhD in English (British literature) from the University of Massachusetts and a JD from Western New England University School of Law.

YH 23-35. Mikki and Ehler’s-Danlos Syndrome.

Your Health is Your Choice with Sara Troy and her guest Mikki Gaffen Stone, on air from August 29th

I would like to shed some light on the topic of often invisible chronic pain conditions such as hypermobile type Ehler’s-Danlos Syndrome. It is said to be a rare condition, but I call bullspit on that. It is rarely diagnosed and that is another thing altogether.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a hereditary condition that affects the skin and the mobility of joints due to abnormal collagen synthesis, an important component of connective tissue; the latter is abundant in the skin, joints and vessels, to which it gives strength and elasticity. Although it develops in childhood, the diagnosis is only reached in later years. The condition takes many different forms that vary in severity, so the clinical manifestations vary widely. Ehlers- Danlos syndrome diagnosis is based on physical examination, through observation of how the patient moves, and the doctor’s analysis of his/her medical history. Usually, a rheumatologist or a physiotherapist establishes the diagnosis rather than a general medical practitioner.

Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome brings with it many, many challenges. One of those challenges is that people with this condition often ‘look well’. This can lead to some unpleasant public scenes where someone tries to shame a person with EDS for using mobility aids for example. The judgment and lack of support can, and all too often does, extend all the way to medical gaslighting.

Born in England, I am a lifelong learner and nomad. Having lived in eight countries to date, I consider myself to be a Global citizen – where I come from is a story, not a place. Home is wherever I am, right now. And we are moving soon ? I work with people. Meeting them where they are and guiding them to exactly where they want to be. We make big changes and small ones. Whatever is needed. I do so while working with my own chronic condition of Eheler’s – Danlos Syndrome, hypermobile type. I believe my own experience with pain enables me to understand others on a level that you only ‘get’ if you experience it yourself.

MH23-35. Deborah L. Staunton and (DMDD)

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Deborah L. Staunton, on air from August 29th

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) is a condition in which children or adolescents experience ongoing irritability, anger, and frequent, intense temper outbursts. The symptoms of DMDD go beyond a “bad mood.” DMDD symptoms are severe.

I am the daughter of a mentally ill alcoholic father and the mother of a mentally ill daughter. At that time it was a brand new diagnosis, very little was known about it and there were no resources for parents. Now that she is 18, her diagnoses have changed and while they are still challenging, I have insight and clarity that I didn’t have then.  Sharing my experience and what I learned from it can help parents who are on that difficult journey with their own kids. It can save them some heartache and provide validation and support. Mental illness still has a lot of stigma associated with it and removing that stigma is an important step in supporting those who suffer from it and those who love them.

Deborah L. Staunton was raised by a mentally ill father and is raising a mentally ill daughter. She came to motherhood late after enduring four miscarriages and despite having an extensive background in Early Childhood Education, has had an extremely difficult journey in raising two neurodivergent children. Writing has been Deborah’s lifeline and her passion since childhood and has kept her grounded when her life was unravelling.

YH23-35. Sherri Scott& Nutrition Energy/Frequency

Your Health is Your Choice with Sara Troy and her guest Sherri Scott, on air from August 29th

Everyone should be encouraged to learn how the body can naturally detox, and  regenerate on its own, if we provide the information, tools (nutrition, energy/frequency) and guidance.    I was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer in 2016 with meets to liver, spleen and lower lung lobe. I was told my prognosis was grim, to prepare for leaving this earth.  The fear tactic was utilized to try to convince me to go in for full right breast and partial left breast mastectomy with anticipation of follow-up with chemo or radiation and reconstructive surgeries.  It all sounded overwhelming to me.    I have managed my MS for almost 10 years with nutrition, lifestyle management and herbs however this was more intense.  My hubby reminded me that “I Had this”.  I wasn’t so confident.

As a Holistic Nutritionist, I figured nutrition, life style management would be enough – I just needed to be very strict. It wasn’t enough. I spent many hours searching for answers, solutions.  I knew energy to the cell was key.

I had, just prior to my diagnosis, purchased a frequency system that I thought it might be a good time to learn how to use it!  So I did.  I have not looked back!  I use frequency every day for myself, my friends and family,  even my pets.

This was my introduction to frequencies. I have not looked back.  I now help others around the world tap into their own boy’s natural regenerative abilities utilizing nutrition and frequency.  The latest frequency is the most outstanding!  Terahertz frequencies are amazing. There is plenty of research out there on it and it is definitely worthwhile to look into!

I am a holistic nutritionist, Cellular detoxification & regeneration Specialist.  I provide the tools, information an guidance to those who wish to ulitize the body’s natural ability to return to optimal health with as little interference as possible.

RGC23-33. Nancy Cotten, Autism Advocate/Advisor.

Raising Our Gifted Children with Sara Troy and her guest Nanacy Cotten, on air August 15th

Nancy says “I am an Autism Advocate/Advisor. I help parents develop strategies to avoid things that can exacerbate problems as well as help provide ideas that can help make their lives easier from the effects of meltdowns, anxiety, poor diet, poor sleep and many sensory issues.”

My degree is in elementary education, and my passion has always been to provide the best care and education for children. Walking alongside parents through some difficult journeys with typically developing and neurodiverse children has been the honor of a lifetime. In my 23+ year career as a corporate child care director for a large hospital, I saw a number of children who were on the spectrum. Many parents brought their children to the center after nights of little sleep. They were worried about their children’s nutrition because of poor diets and they were frustrated and overwhelmed by the meltdowns and anxiety their children were experiencing. I have felt so much empathy for them and thought there must be strategies to make things better and so I began to search for answers. Later a grandson was born and he is on the spectrum. I have continued doing extensive research into my retirement years and have found many ways to help the autistic community. I feel compelled to share what I have found.

I come from a line of teachers. Back in the early 1900’s, my grandfather was the teacher in a one room schoolhouse. Years later, my mother was a middle school teacher and then I became a teacher. While my husband was in pharmacy school, I taught math in middle school and then I was needed as a first grade teacher. After staying home while nurturing our three young children, I was hired as the director of a large hospitals onsite child care center which had 3 shifts of staff and was open year round, initially never closing even for holidays. I took that center through an arduous National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation process and the center remained accredited for many years. After retirement, I have continued to do extensive research looking for strategies to help parents of autistic children and adults. I have a support group in the North Texas area for parents of mainly teens and adults.

Nancy wrote.

Because of people’s positive thoughts, kind words were said,

Because of the kind words people said, others were encouraged,

Because others were encouraged, they spoke up about injustice,

Because they spoke up about injustice, a group was formed,

Because a group was formed, major action was taken,

Because major action was taken, children were saved from being trafficked,

Because children were saved from being trafficked, societies changed,

Because societies changed, the world changed.

All because of people’s positive thoughts and kind words.

Change begins with us.

Nancey has contributed to Our Forgotten Children’s book series.
