TMS16/03 The Need of a LOO (toilet)

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Jasmine Burton aired January 19th-24th

Not everyone has a LOO

IMG_2323We take for granted in the Western world that everyone has a flushing toilet, but that is not true, a number of people in the world without a loo is huge and this can cause sickness. One team took this on and came up with a LOO (toilet) that can be used anywhere in the world giving sanitation and some dignity to those that need it.

Now with the refugees being scattered in camps, this product is in even more need.

Wish for WASH, LLC is a social impact organization that strives to bring innovation to sanitation through culturally specific design, research, and education. The SafiChoo toilet system, Wish for WASH’s first sanitation model tailored initially intended for a Kenyan refugee community, premiered in Fall 2013 as a Georgia Tech senior design project. Since then, our team has evolved into a talented group of young and diverse engineers, designers, business analysts, and development researchers – dedicating their skills to disrupt how the world is tackling sanitation relief products and services. The most current SafiChoo design is composed of separate, modular units, which enables the user to chose the elements of the system to best meet their specific needs. Our collective teamwork and my exposure through the Spring 2015 TedxAtlanta talk in addition to a number of other speaking events have brought Wish for WASH to the attention of numerous international aid and relief agencies interested in our mission and products. Our efforts are now turned toward completing a beta test in Spring 2016 in communities outside of Lusaka, Zambia, which will focus on user experience and overall feasibility of the product in partnership with our target users.

12391955_10205426035306728_3542550507709458489_nJasmine Burton was born and raised in Dunwoody, Georgia. In 2014, her senior design team won the Georgia Tech InVenture Prize Competition, the largest undergraduate invention competition in the United States, for their design of an inexpensive mobile toilet, SafiChoo. Before graduating, from Georgia Tech’s Industrial Design Program, she participated in the Georgia Tech Women’s Leadership conference, the CDC’s Summer Public Health Scholars Program, Humanity in Action Fellowship and Industrial Design studio classes that emphasized ethnography and social impact work. She hopes to improve women’s health via redesigning water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure which is why she founded Wish for WASH, a social impact startup that seeks to bring innovation to sanitation. Over the next year, Jasmine is serving as Global Health Corps Fellow in Lusaka, Zambia working as a design specialist at the Society for Family Health. Jasmine identifies as a humanitarian design activist and, ultimately, seeks to use her creativity to make the world smile.

C 15/42b “Indestructible You”: Building a Self that Can’t be Broken

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Tim Ward aired October 20th-26th

We are all on a journey of Self Discovery but who guides on our road and how “Indestructible” can we make ourselves along the way?

images (8)The collaborative work of Shai Tubali and Tim Ward, “Indestructible You: Building a Self that Can’t be Broken” is a practical guidebook for making yourself so strong inside that life’s relentless ups and downs cannot shake you and cannot break you. “Indestructible You” will help you uncover the powerful, driving force of your true self, and let go of everything that holds you back. “Indestructible You” is based exercises and practices developed by Shai Tubali through his research and work guiding several hundred individuals through psycho-transformational processes.

In essence: Life is like an eternal seesaw. At every given moment you’re either up – getting what you want and feeling powerful, or down – finding yourself rejected, weakened and frustrated. We are forever hoping to bend the laws of this ‘unfair game’ so that we stay on the up-side of life. But this unrealistic insistence is why we suffer. “Indestructible You” reveals the way to step down from the eternal seesaw and build an unbreakable self, a self that remains fearless and strong no matter what life throws at you. Impressively ‘user friendly’ from beginning to end, “Indestructible You: Building a Self that Can’t be Broken” is insightful, informative, practical, and inspiring. Very highly recommended for personal and community library Self-Help/Self-Improvement collections.

TSM 15/41 Every Homeless Person has a Story

Telling The Stories of Those Too Often Ignored

12074657_875806979139940_2367004889872836863_n

Throughout the past four years I have met many people, now friends, who for various reasons are, or were, homeless.

Writing about the homeless and helping the homeless, has given my life a purpose that it didn’t have before. Documenting their stories will, I hope, introduce them to the public in a non-threatening way. Some panhandlers look intimidating, but that disappears when one sees them laugh. A typical day for me involves taking the bus and walking two blocks to work. I pass Joy’s spot every day. I usually sit and talk with her for twenty to thirty minutes. Chester and Hippo may drop by to chat. Most afternoons, depending on weather, I walk two blocks to the park where the group of panhandlers varies in size from two to twenty or more. They don’t panhandle at the park. Like a soap opera, every day is different; some scenarios will carry over a few days or weeks. People will disappear for weeks or months due illness, rehab programs or incarceration. When I met Joy I was going through an emotional crisis. Meeting her and her friends – worrying about them and whether or not they would be able to eat and find a place to sleep – took my mind off my problems, that then, seemed insignificant. It was – is – truly a life changing experience.

SEVEN FRIENDS AND A DOG DIED DURING THE WRITING OF THIS BOOK ……………………….

Dennis Cardiff has been involved with street people since 2010, when he began to reach out, on his own, to some of the people without homes who he encountered in his daily life. In his new book, he documents conversations he’s had with them over the past 4 years and, in the process, gives those who are often robbed of their humanity a human face. Written in diary form by month, and including some of Cardiff’s own poetry, the author chronicles the lives of people who are often ignored, feared or reviled.

We can do something about it if we stop ignoring them.

TSM 15/35 I Walked away from Addiction

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Jayda Jay, originally aired September 1st/15

This interview is for anyone struggling who believes the life they’re living now is unchangeable. I’m living proof there is a solution to the disease of addiction. It’s up to you to choose to hear me and take your own path to recovery, it can be done.

My yesterday and my today, I am now really living and not avoiding life

11921688_1151930868156867_8143841776529130964_n

8 months ago I checked myself into a detox facility where I embarked on this life long recovery journey. I was literally empty. Bankrupt in every sense of the word, in every form imaginable. Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually & most definitely financially. Today, I am a changed person. I live a life of freedom. I don’t have to depend on a substance just to be able to get out of bed. I take care of my body, mind, my soul and spirit. My life is rich with family, friends and a support network of people who I can always trust. I am beyond grateful to be given such an amazing opportunity to live the life I was truly always meant to live. 1 out of 10 people suffers from the disease of addiction. 10% of the population. Sadly, very few take the opportunity to receive help yet it is available to us all so freely. Especially in British Columbia. Many think it’s impossible. Through education, rehabilitation, therapy & an abstinence-based recovery program I received the help I needed.

TSM 15/34 You did not Invite RAPE it was their CHOICE

Thier Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Evelyn Obahor aired August 25th/15

RAPE…..Is not to be taken lightly and is no laughing matter IT SCARES FOR LIFE

SMILING FLIRTING EVEN OVERT SEXUAL ATTENTION IS STILL NOT AN INVITATION TO RAPE.

Being a sensual and sexy woman is not an invitation or permission to RAPE. BEING A WOMAN IS NOT PERMISSION TO RAPE.

Being a child a wife an innocent is not permission for you to rape. Why is it that some men think that a woman being friendly or living in her own sensuality means that she is rapable? How can any man look at a child and think sexual thoughts and ACT ON THEM?

It is shameful that in this day and age with so much global information we still have to address the issue of a girls, women’s, boys right to say NO and not be raped and that some cultures still think they have the RIGHT to RAPE.
