Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Norma Burnson aired from November 22nd

In my heart and so, l I am happiest in a garden. I believe that a garden is the closest we’ll get to God while here on Mother Earth.

Journaling since the age of 12, it wasn’t until I reached the age of 58 that I began writing books. Now I am working on my 3rd book, “Sustainable Food for the Globe; Future Pioneers, The Children”.

Sustainable Food for the Globe stands for wholesome food production, rescuing wasted food and educating our “Future Pioneers” to become ethical stewards of all things found us – here our home, Mother Earth. As a co/founder of Energime University she believes in our ability to sustain our world through education and innovations.  http://energimeuniversity.org

In 2013, Mrs. Burnson received the Delegate Award from The International Women’s Leadership Association in recognition of services rendered to our country as a U.S. Navy Veteran and for demonstrating leadership in both national and international business arenas; for dedication to her community as a college professor and mentor; for being a sustainable food activist and humanitarian.

On Earth Day 2015 the second book in the series Sustainable Food for the Globe, Everyday People Producing Food in Abundance became an overnight 5 star bestseller.

Earlier this year, Mrs. Burnson was invited to participate in The United Nations Environment Assembly, in short UNEA.

The UNEA is the house where representatives from all peoples and sectors of our societies such as parliamentarians, local authorities, indigenous peoples, civil society, business and the private sector, the scientific and academic community – and all peoples in general— can have a say in the design of the solutions for our planet’s health.

In 2014, she was active in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Assembly, and in 2013 participated in the United Nations the World We Want Assembly. Continue reading

untitled-design-4 TURINAWE SAMSON

I was born to a family of nine children; three of which are my mother’s and six are my step mother’s. I have lived in an environment full of violations of women’s and children’s rights. Being the first born to my mother, my dad’s second wife, my birth was characterized by misunderstandings and chaos in the family. My name “Turinawe” means “we are with him” meaning we are with God. At the age of five my sixth elder sister had dropped out of school due to lack of school fees, my eldest sister was pregnant at seventeen years. This was due to school dropout and parental negligence, her son was born prematurely at seven months but luckily enough he survived. He never attended school and currently his whereabouts are not clear since his mother could not tell him who his father is. At the age of six years I started school. This was made possible at this early age because my mother loved and treasured education. For her she is not educated though her father had resources to take her to school. She narrated that her mother died the day she was born due to bleeding after which her father married another wife. Her father was a drunkard who beat her and the step mother every night. He provided no support to the family. His money was for drinking alcohol. At seven years old she was assigned to look after goats although she preferred going to school. She talks of her peers who threw stones at her as she was digging along the road when they were going to school in the mornings. “I surely loved going to school like them” she says. At the age of thirteen she left home and started working for money. She says her first dress was bought for her by a man who employed her. At that time she says that she was almost naked. At an early age she married my father who was already married, aged and sickly, as it was the only way for her survival. The polygamous marriage status I was born into denied me the right to be dedicated in born again faith church to which my father had converted about thirty years before. Friends of my father who were leaders in the Anglican Church took me and baptized me there, and called me Turinawe Robert. After which the born again church realized they were losing a staunch follower and called me back and named me Turinawe Samson. I feel my spiritual rights were violated at such an early age. A year after my graduation from a bible school I served in a Pentecostal church from which I was expelled and banned from attending church services or performing any other religious duties in some Christian churches in western Uganda. This resulted in me moving to Kampala city where I started my humanitarian mission. My expulsion came as a result of me preaching against discrimination of people alleged to be homosexuals, co-habiting or having sex before or outside of marriage. I opposed the proposal by some of the church leaders that during church service that included women, the women would have to sit down on mats; as they didn’t deserve to sit on chairs like men and prohibiting women from preaching and leading church projects; that women doing these things was against the scripture. On my expulsion I was named “A dangerous pastor”. In 2003 I lost my child hood girlfriend Adella who was forced into marriage by her father. I grew up with this girl and we attended the same primary school. When she was in primary five at age of fifteen years her father chose a husband for her and forced her into marriage because he wanted bride price. This man had lost a wife. Three months later she was pregnant. Unfortunately when she went for antenatal health services she was found HIV positive. On returning home and informing the husband he divorced her. Adella tried going back home but her father chased her back to the husband’s place. She stayed with her aunt. At the time of delivery she could not manage the hospital fees so the aunt tried attending to her using her hands to manually pull the baby out. During the delivery she was injured and got fistula. All this stigmatized her and no one cared about her. Around four months before her death I met her at a local dispensary where she had gone to seek treatment. We talked for almost two hours. She said “Samson, I am going to die. Not because of my mistakes but because of something I was force into by my father” as we departed. It is this personal experience and experience from people around me right from childhood that led me to dedicate myself to contributing towards ending the suffering and mistreatment of people based on their sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or beliefs and founding Universal Love Ministries.

You would think that today with so many women holding high positions in government and in business, that we would have moved away from the misogynist man with his sexual banter and abuse towards woman, but no, Donald Trump has made it OK to grab a woman’s pussy and make unwanted advances because he is Donald Trump.

57fbf3b1170000bf16acae2dIT IS NOT OK TO TALK ABOUT A WOMAN IN ANY WAY THAT DEMEANS HER TO BEING A SEXUAL OBJECT .

IT IS NOT OK TO LOOK AT WOMAN AS YOUR SEXUAL OBJECT.

IT IS NOT OK FOR YOU TO SPEAK OR  APPROACH OR TOUCH OR RAPE A WOMAN JUST BECAUSE YOUR A MAN.

WE ARE FREE PERSONS WITH DIVINE INTELLECT AND THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHO WE HAVE IN OUR LIVES AND THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN OUR OWN SEXUALITY,  THIS NOT AN OPEN INVITATION TO A MAN FOR SEX.

As despicable as Donald Trump’s bragging about his actual sexual assaults and/or attempted sexual assaults of women are, the Access Hollywood sex tape provides a textbook study of how such assaults are aided and abetted by other men.

TSM16-39 THE TRUTH ABOUT FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Angela Peabody. Airs from September 27th on.

What is Female Genital Mutilation?
Female Genital Mutilation, more commonly known as Female Circumcision is the intentional removal of the external parts of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. There are 4 different related types of procedures.

Angela Peabody is the Executive Director and Founder of Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation, a 501c3 organisation founded on the principles of eliminating violence and injustices against women angela-peabodys-photo-1and girls. The mission of the organisation is to empower women and girls through education to eradicate gender based violence with emphasis on female genital cutting (FGC). She is a graduate of the School of Journalism at Columbia University. After a celebrated career as a Television Broadcast Journalist in Liberia, and Special Press Secretary to the country’s first woman Minister of Agriculture, Angela immigrated to the United States, following the bloody and brutal coup d’etat in her native Liberia.

It is Angela’s wish that her latest book, When the Games Froze (Buy Here ) will garner interest and support from the American public in the campaign to end female genital cutting. She developed the passion as an advocate for women and girls against injustices and violence after her sister was killed by her husband and a friend of hers died in childbirth as a result of female genital cutting.

The first 51qgubaaz8l-_sx346_bo1204203200_Liberian woman to ever pen and publish a full-length novel, Angela is now an accomplished and award-winning author. Her literary work includes the novels, Exiled – within the Bowels of American Society (published 2001) and When the Games Froze (published 2014). She is the former Chair of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the National Writers Union and served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Women Business Owners and on the Advisory Board of Tigerlily Foundation. Angela continues to spread her message about injustices against women, women’s empowerment and human rights violation through Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation.

History & Mission Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation was founded on the principles of ending violence and injustices against women and girls. The mission of the organization is to empower women and girls through education to eradicate gender based violence. Founded in 2012, the organization, Global Woman merged with another organization called P.E.A.C.E. (People Everywhere All Created Equal); the name was officially changed to Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation. In the same year, the organization received its 501c3 tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service under the new name. Unique Strengths & Assets There are several organizations in the United States that advocate against various individual types of gender based violence. However Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation is unique in its advocacy against female genital mutilation. The organization raises awareness through events and the distribution of literature about the violent acts against women and girls. The Executive Director, Angela Peabody authored a novel about female genital mutilation, from which all proceeds and royalties are donated to the organization as support against the practice of female genital mutilation. Programs Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation engages in four categories of programs:

prog_1

1. Rehabilitation: A Group and Individual Counseling program in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area for survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM). This program provides an environment where women and girls can receive counselling and empowerment for a future free of FGM.

2. Prevention: A program for at-risk girls and children that are not at risk of experiencing FGM but might be the friend of an at-risk girl. This program entails working with parents, teachers, school nurses and school counselors as well as the children. To date, a training manual and a reading story book have been completed and ready to be shared with the public by Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation. In addition, a cultural history book is currently being written with child-friendly language.

3. A post FGM vagina does not look as it did prior to undergoing FGM.  Its appearance is unfamiliar to American healthcare workers, and they are not accustomed to identifying and working with it.  Restorative surgery is the answer to maNy post-FGM OB/GYN problems.  The surgery will restore the vagina to normal appearance and functions.  The surgery will help the young women have normal OB/GYN check-ups without embarrassment and fear.  It enables them to have normal childbirth without the risk of infant and maternal mortalities, and to live without the physical genital pain they encounter with every monthly cycle and with each urination and sexual encounter.  The centre is raising funds to support the surgeries of the young women.

The components of the Post Buddy Program are:

  • One-on-one Counseling
  • Group Counseling
  • A Network of Participating OB/GYNo
  • Physical Therapy
  • OB/GYN and Restorative Surgery Referrals
