C22-16. Caprice Hogg, Art, Books and Teaching

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Caprice Hogg, on air from April 19th

Caprice first picked up her paintbrush in 1994 and quickly discovered a hidden talent. She studied with artists Karen Hersey, Keith Smith and Shane Garton and soon found herself in a world of colourful oils, shapes and art techniques. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge of art has become an obsession as Caprice eagerly reads each and every art book she can get her hands on. In 1998, Caprice’s first solo exhibition gave her the confidence and courage to pursue painting as a full-time career. She works and exhibits her paintings from her Studio Gallery located in Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. Caprice’s works are now in private and corporate collections in Western and Eastern Canada, the United States, Europe, and New Zealand.

After painting full-time for many years, it was a natural progression for Caprice to start teaching art. Passing on the knowledge that was passed on to her is certainly an important part of her career. Whenever the opportunity arises, Caprice travels to not only see new landscapes but also to art galleries and museums in Canada and abroad. Looking at art illuminates and inspires. She then calls upon the powers of her imagination to portray on canvas the beauty and majesty of the mountains and forests that surround her. Her vibrant colours and bold strokes reflect her strong connection to mother nature.

C22-16 Linda Heeler, Normal Lies in Life

Choose Positive Living Sara Troy with her guest Linda Heeler, PCC, on air from April 19th

Coaching gave me my life back. I had so much social anxiety that it was easier to lose myself in my family and work. Therapy helped but I still had crippling fear and anxiety every time I wanted to try something new. Now I’m living an amazing life and doing things I never thought possible. The best part is, that I’m helping others do the same!

Linda Heeler is a Life/Executive Coach and host of the Normal Lies podcast.  While working as a dental hygienist, Linda discovered coaching as another way to help people; without having to put her hands in their mouths.

Can our devastations be opportunities for great transformation? Moments of devastation will visit everyone in life. Whether it is grief, illness, loss, or some other trauma, no one escapes. In Celine’s case, one of those moments was her diagnosis with breast cancer in 2016. As you join Celine on her journey from getting this life-changing news, to surrendering and ultimately choosing a path of transformation, you are prompted to reflect on your own life and how your personal traumas have shaped you into the person you are today. You will discover that every crisis is an opportunity to evolve and that despite the inevitable pain that comes with growth, life really is happening for you, not to you. It is always unfolding for your highest good. Packed full of practical tips and insights, this book is a reminder that you are not just a helpless victim of life. You are a powerful creator and life is actually trying to help you grow into the fullest version of you. I started writing after breast cancer in 2016 and Gifts from the Devastation is my second book. I secured a publishing contract with John Hunt Publishing in the UK after self-publishing my first book in 2019.

C22-15. Andrew Biernat & The Growing Pains of Growth

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Andrew Biernat, on air from April 12th

The process of personal growth isn’t always pleasant. After years of counseling, reading mountains of personal development books, and going through numerous challenges, including quitting alcohol and experiencing 3 miscarriages in between our two girls, much of the growth I’ve experienced has come at a cost. Some of the growth processes are fun and motivational. Much of it cuts you to the core in order for you to heal back stronger.

MH22-15. JD Mass. Race for What?

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest JD Mass, on air from April 12th

RACE FOR WHAT? A White Man’s Journey & Guide to Healing Racism from Within. In 2017, JD Mass earned his doctorate in Organizational Psychology and became heavily involved in white antiracism groups in Los Angeles, and later in St. Louis.

Race is currently a hot topic of discussion. Questions being considered are: Does racism still exist? What does equity look like?  How do we achieve justice?

Anti-black racism is real.  It hasn’t been corrected and it won’t go away on its own. Aboriginal (Black) and Indigenous folks have carried the burden for far too long.  It is time for white folks to take the next step and complete the mission.

St Louis, MO – JD Mass, PsyD, releases his book, Race for What? A White Man’s Journey & Guide to Healing Racism from Within. Mass tells the story of growing up in a black community and witnessing racism firsthand, as well as his successes and missteps in building powerful alliances with the community in which he was raised. Race for What? released March 29, 2022.
Part memoir, part how-to, and entirely real, this masterfully woven book takes readers back in time to St. Louis in the 80s and 90s, when Mass was growing up with a circle of creative friends and influences. The talent he bonded with, such as the rapper Nelly, would set the stage for a life of music, religion, culture, community development, and politics.

Mass says, “I have been on a lifelong journey to learn why racism was created and what we can look forward to without it. Change is happening. Will it be the superficial change that doesn’t bring forth justice or the transformational healing that is needed? Race for What? provides a vision for the latter.”
Race for What? provides stories with a unique perspective from a white man’s experience and illustrates seven steps to healing. Mass encourages white people to work through the emotional and psychological obstacles in order to repair and heal the harm racism has caused.

  • The privilege he had growing up around black folks
  • His white privilege and experiences
  • Seven steps for addressing the racial divide
  • Reparations and why we need them
  • Why the “it’s not as bad as it used to be” argument is flawed
  • Being Nelly’s business manager
  • Why and how Nelly brought JD in to help with everything from nightclub ventures to clothing brands

In 2017, JD Mass earned his doctorate in Organizational Psychology and became heavily involved in white antiracism groups in Los Angeles, and later in St. Louis. This work inspired him to write Race for What? A wise thinker and guide, JD hopes for our society to finally correct the harm of racism and help create a humane world.
