ES24-32. Norma Burnson, Veterans for Earth

Eco Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Norma Burnson, on air from August 6th

“Together we can keep Mother Earth vibrant and alive.”

Norma says that she joined the U.S. Navy 10 days after my 18th birthday.
Boot camp took place in Orlando, Florida. Eight weeks later, my first tour of duty was at the Naval base in Rota, Spain. It was the beginning of my freedom, and total happiness.
I met my husband, Kevin. We have been together 50 years, and have never been separated since.
We traveled throughout Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany, Gibraltar, Morocco, Japan, Taiwan, enjoyed a lovely cruise around the Caribbean, and visited Mexico as well.
Upon returning to the States, I used my G.I. Bill, and attended the University of Illinois at Chicago. I was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest ( date) and most prestigious honor society in the United States. Then I spent a few years taking classes at The Art Institute of Chicago.
From there I worked as an International Trade Specialist, involved with the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, spearheading seminars. In addition was head of the membership committee for the International Association of Greater Chicago and
WIT, Women in International Trade.
Amongst other rewards, I was honored to receive The International Women’s Leadership Association, in recognition for my contribution to Family – Career – Community, recognized as a Woman of Outstanding Leadership.

In the early 90’s, I established my own company. My work consisted of setting up the International Trade Department for manufacturing companies. Either in house or off site.
I had the great opportunity to teach a class on International Trade at Oakton Community College for 8 years.
This was when my health began to deteriorate, and I received the diagnosis of congestive heart failure, on top of chronic asthma.
Confined in bed, (30 years) I used my time painting, needlepoint and reading. One day, out of the blue, I received an invitation from Sir Richard Branson to participate in a zoom meeting.
Sir Branson had invited entrepreneurs from all around the world to work on Plan B, because Plan A was leading us towards non sustainable practices.
Stuck in bed, I realized I could help the cause by writing, and that way become an active participant working towards Plan B.
That is when Sustainable Food for the Globe came to be. To date I have participated in the MIT Solve Lab Challenge Team Leader (2016, 2017), authored 8 books, and have 3 other projects in the making, including The Sustainable Food for the Globe Foundation.
In addition I got involved with the Global Citizens Circle. Since Sustainable Food for the Globe’s inception, I have met movers and shakers from around the world. All sharing their advocacy of healing Mother Earth, and working for the better good of all.
Sustainable Food for the Globe champions food production, food security, rescuing wasted food, and food deserts.
Due to my fragile health we left Chicago and moved to the country. During the last 6 years, my health has improved, slowly but steadily. Currently, my health issues are Asthma, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, congestive heart failure, kidney deterioration, anxiety attacks, PTSD, insomnia, nightmares, night frights, and cold sweats.

That being said, all my body of work is conducted via an iPa, and an iPhone.
Bedridden, I enjoy working with over 5,000 colleagues and friends from all around the world.
There is one thing that infuriates me, it is when a person falls into the helplessly hopeless, “Someone should do something!” As civilly as possible, my response is “You are somebody, do something!”
There are so many resources available, just by doing a Google search, one can research thousands of topics, find and get in touch with people and organizations that are already working on fixing these problems.
It is a fact that for every problem we are facing on Mother Earth, there is a solution. Unfortunately the very powerful corporations around the world make sure to hide these solutions, especially if that solution hurts their bottom line.
What do I believe?

1) “Together we can keep Mother Nature vibrant and alive”,

2) “A lion is like the truth, all things being equal, set it free and it will pretty much take care of itself”, and the most important of my convictions,

3) A lion is born to face death everyday, fear is not an option.”
Sara, thank you for inviting me for an interview, it is truly an honor.

NA24-32. Chandler Picot’s Addiction Recovery

Nature of Addictions with Sara Troy and her guest Chandler Picot, on air from August 6th

My name is Chandler Picot, and I am a 32-year-old resident of the wonderful state of North Carolina. Growing up in the small town of Greenville, I later became a Certified Peer Support Specialist and a Certified Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor after spending over fourteen years in active addiction. My recovery journey, fueled by the grace of Jesus Christ, involved a robust 12-step program, intensive therapy, rehab, and a halfway house, which collectively gave me a fighting chance at a “normal” life.

Over a few years ago, I moved to Siler City with the goal of centralizing my e-commerce business. After months of commuting through Siler City, I recognized the benefits of living in a centrally located county within North Carolina. The potential for growth and the warmth of its residents made me fall in love with the city. I actively participate in online support groups and forums, assisting people with various behavioral health issues.

One of my long-time passions is helping others in any way possible. You might often find me and my closest friends volunteering at local food pantries, which we do weekly. I take great joy in seeing my fellow man receive the help they desperately need. The non-profits and charities I work with provide food, clothing, and housing to Siler City residents on an ongoing basis. As a Qualified Professional in the Substance Abuse field, I witness daily how severe neglect has led to the decay of many North Carolinians, especially in Siler City. I frequently advocate on both citywide and state levels for those who have been neglected and ignored for decades.

My entrepreneurial spirit is evident in my successful e-commerce business and various entrepreneurial ventures, including my role as the President of Chatham Weekly. I am also a fervent advocate in the substance abuse and mental health fields, striving to support those in need. My journey of sobriety, entrepreneurship, and advocacy began at Pitt Community College, where I graduated with an Associate in Arts in 2018.

Driven by a desire to create impactful change, I transitioned into politics, seeking to influence effective policy-making to address pressing issues facing North Carolinians. Before May 25, 2018, I battled active addiction, but today I proudly stand as a beacon of recovery, having maintained sobriety for over five years. I remain deeply connected to my recovery community, offering support and hope to those on their own paths to wellness.

In the depths of my darkest days, I found solace in the unwavering love and guidance of Jesus Christ. His divine intervention ignited a transformative journey that rescued me from addiction and instilled a profound sense of purpose. Through my recovery and community advocacy work, I strive to demonstrate my love for Jesus Christ by embodying His teachings and spreading His message of hope and redemption.

I put my faith into action by volunteering at a drive-thru food pantry, where I provide essential food supplies and share words of encouragement and faith with those in need. Advocacy has also become a way of life for me, as I serve at the North Carolina Legislative Building, raising my voice to support accessible treatment options, improved education about addictions, and the availability of community resources.

As a Peer Support Specialist and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, I am privileged to demonstrate Christ’s love in my daily work. By providing guidance, empathy, and understanding to individuals battling addiction, I strive to be a source of hope and inspiration. My faith in God guides me in taking tough stands on issues affecting people, giving me the courage to confront adversity and bring about positive change.

Ignite Heart and Soul with Sara Troy and her guest Victor Acquista, on air from August 6th

Essence in presence—Embodied spirituality and shifting your perception from the egoic self to expression of your divine self. I shall be talking about the three “H’s”: Head Heart-Hands and the three “A’s”: Authentic-Alignment-Action, the difference between content and context in living a more authentic life, and why the pillars of gratitude, peace, trust, and love are essential.
We are all each individual unique embodied souls with valuable experiences to share.

BB24-31. Jamie Martin – JEM Consulting.

Building Your Business with Sara Troy and her guest Jamie Martin, on air from July 30th

My journey in leadership began through working for bosses and companies that treated their employees poorly. Witnessing this mistreatment sparked a desire to change the status quo. I immersed myself in the study of servant leadership and adapted my leadership style to prioritize serving others. This approach centers on treating my team with empathy and understanding, particularly concerning mental health. By fostering a supportive environment, I focus on encouragement and perspective rather than immediate accountability and judgment. This leadership philosophy benefits everyone in the organization, promoting a culture of respect and compassion

“People will move mountains, when they feel valued, respected and understood”

Jamie Martin’s professional journey commenced at Starbucks, where foundational skills in customer service and operational excellence were cultivated from the ground up as a Barista. This early experience ignited Jamie’s passion for retail operations and laid the groundwork for a career marked by leadership and community advocacy.

Transitioning from Starbucks, Jamie advanced to roles at Walmart, initially serving as an Acting Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager. Here, Jamie gained extensive experience in managing large-scale operations, overseeing teams, and optimizing business processes. This tenure at Walmart provided invaluable insights into multi-unit retail management and strategic leadership.

Jamie’s career then took a pivotal turn at the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB), where Jamie excelled as a Senior Store Manager and Regional Manager. Managing operations across 20 locations within a unionized environment, Jamie not only oversaw multimillion-dollar budgets and led teams of up to 400 staff but also played a crucial role during the legalization of cannabis in British Columbia. Jamie navigated complex regulatory landscapes, developed compliance strategies aligned with the Cannabis Act, and fostered partnerships with government entities.

Beyond professional achievements, Jamie is deeply committed to community engagement and advocacy for First Nations. This commitment is exemplified through active involvement with the community engagement and advocacy for First Nationswhere Jamie collaborates on initiatives aimed at cultural awareness, economic development, and supporting local initiatives. Jamie integrates Indigenous training and community partnerships into business practices, ensuring a holistic approach to leadership that respects and promotes diverse perspectives.

In 2024, Jamie founded Jem Consulting as Owner/Operator, leveraging expertise in regulatory compliance, government policy, and community engagement. At Jem Consulting, Jamie focuses on optimizing operational processes, providing strategic guidance for start-ups, and enhancing human resources practices. Jamie’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to fostering inclusive workplaces continue to drive growth and empower teams, all while advancing initiatives that positively impact both business outcomes and community well-being. Jamie Martin’s career progression—from Starbucks barista to accomplished business leader and advocate for First Nations—is a testament to resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to making a meaningful difference in retail operations and beyond.

BB24-31. Rebecca Visser Stop Burnout

Building Your Business with Sara Troy and her guest Rebecca Visser, on air from July 30th

Even from a young age, I struggled with perfectionism and tried to control every aspect of my life to get ahead. Despite achieving a seemingly “perfect career” with a good title, salary, and accolades from my bosses and peers, I felt completely unfulfilled. This relentless pursuit to “achieve” throughout my life inevitably led to severe burnout. My only choice left was to take six months off to reconnect with myself.
In retrospect, I realized I was never living in the moment, always focused on the future or berating myself for past mistakes. Through coaching and other holistic practices, I’ve witnessed the power of letting go of limiting beliefs and connecting with our inner wisdom.

By sharing my story, I aim to help others find the peace and fulfillment I discovered on my journey. The world
needs more people pursuing their unique talents, so they can reconnect with their joy and we can better face societal challenges.
