C18-18 The Wisdom of Listening. Pieces of Gold from a Decade of Interviewing

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Marilyn R. Wilson. ON AIR FROM MAY 1ST

The next time you’re out in public, take a moment to look around you. Each and every person you see holds wisdom in their pockets—pieces of gold they’re accumulating as they walk their own unique life journey.

Within these pages Marilyn shares some of the many pieces of gold she has received over her decade-long career. They have been offered to her during interviews, through random encounters and while facing difficult challenges. The most important? We are each unique and exactly who we are meant to be.

Are you ready to dig for gold? All you need to do is be brave, be present in the moment and be open to the possibilities—then start a conversation.

Every life has a story and, no matter our background, we share similar hopes, dreams and fears. This book not only gives you insight into the varied lives of its subjects but, through Marilyn’s reflections, shows how we each walk a similar spiritual path.”

Robbin Whachell, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Bahamas Weekly

Marilyn shows us, through her compassionate and incisive interviews, how to grasp and link those golden moments, like sparkling prisms of light, into an animated and profound acceptance of ourselves, the people we encounter, the relationships we build, and the dreams that will set us free.”

Gabriella Contestabile, Author, Founder of Su Misura Sensory Journeys

I was reminded we are collectively all walking our own paths, but we often experience similar emotions, feelings, obstacles, challenges, triumphs, rewards, and successes. We each learn as we go and we each become wiser as time passes. This is humanity.”

Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer and speaker with a passion for interviewing. Her career as a writer began in an unusual way, by answering a Craigslist ad. The world shifted while she conducted her first interview—she had found her passion. Since 2006, she has interviewed over a hundred and fifty people from as near as her hometown of Vancouver, Canada, and as far away as South Africa.

Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a one-on-one interview with an internationally recognized artist, her goal is the same—to give wings to the unique journeys of inspiring individuals. In 2007, this goal led the author to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on articles about professionals working in the fashion industry paired with photography and illustrations by local artists.

In 2015, Marilyn took her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book—Life Outside the Box—the first in a new series highlighting the journeys of real people living extraordinary and real lives.

A LITTLE FASHION AND ITS STORY

More on your host Sara Troy’s shows,

 choose-positive-living

The journey to this book is so different than my others, so not sure exactly what angle you’d like to take. Life Outside The Box took 18 months of self-doubt and hard work to become a reality. Every chapter involved 1-2 interviews, transcribing the interviews, writing and then getting approval for it by the person interviewed, my publisher and then my editor.

The Wisdom of Listening was so different. I had been struggling for over a year trying to write Life Outside the Box #2 – the second in a series – with little success. One day in a meditation circle, the desire to write The Wisdom of Listening hit me hard. It was a passion project I had on a back burner.  I thought if I just went to the computer and laid out the book, I could get back to the one I was working on.

Instead, I couldn’t stop. The first draft poured out of me like a waterfall over the next 3-1/2 weeks. It was a beautiful experience.  It still took a year to bring to launch, but I will forever be grateful that I followed my heart and allowed this book to come next.

The book title and concept – In one interview with Fine Artist Pamela Masik, she shared how her art helped her heal and that one day she realized art was a piece of gold she held in her pocket that she could share with others to help them heal. That struck me hard and I knew one day I would take all the pieces of gold interviewees shared with me, as well as wisdom I gained on my personal journey, and pass them on to others through this book.

11665529_1029390040404775_5250457399171527604_n

I want to share Jenny’s life journey with Autism as she is living proof and a role model that these individuals are a huge asset and blessing to society and to us individually. There is still a stigma with Autism and the world needs to look at it  in a entirely different way.

05040_Story_Jenny001Jenny  was born in Yellowknife, but lived the majority of her life in Vernon, British Columbia. Jenny graduated Grade 12 with Honors and Scholarships and then moved right after High School to Vancouver to attend Vancouver Film School for Animation and is now a 2D Classical and 3D Digital Character Design Animator. Jenny recently just finished working on a film for Super Channel with her animation and about to start on another film. Jenny also published her novel of a Trilogy in May 2015 and right from pre order was an Amazon and Canadian Best Seller. She is currently working on the second novel for the Trilogy. Despite being diagnosed with very low functioning Autism at 3 years old, Jenny has blossomed and always remained focused on pursuing her dreams and is passionate in inspiring others to do the same. She has just turned 23 this month, 95 % out of her Autism and is living proof and a role model to show others that Autism is not a Death Sentence but a rich fulfilled Life Sentence.

Recently Janet was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for a Comedy at the 6th Annual Indie Awards in Los Angles and was submitted for Leo Award nomination here in BC. In June of 2016, Janet was awarded the 2016 Unlimited Woman of Creativity in Victoria, BC. When Jenny was first diagnosed with Autism it has been Janet’s mission to support Jenny 110% and raise Autism awareness and bring out the positive of Autism and not the usual stigma with it. Janet has and does work tirelessly in every avenue to provide all the support and opportunities for her daughter and be her constant rock, her voice and sounding board. Even going out of Canada to research Autism, find more support and further her knowledge about caring for her daughter. Even though diagnosed with Breast Cancer in July of 2014, Janet published her own book, The Autistic Author and Animator, A Mother’s View of a Daughter’s Triumph, as Janet and Jenny wanted to publish their books at the same time and do book events and talks together. It is also a best seller and Jenny’s story is reaching out and touching the hearts of many people. Her story is not only to reach out to the Autistic community, but to everyone.

P14/48b “A Cry From The Dust”, The Mountain Meadows Massacre

Originally Aired from December 1st on Positive Living Vibrations with Sara Troy and her guest Carrie Stuart Parks

She has a pencil … and she’s not afraid to use it!

Can a forensic artist reconstruct two centuries of suppressed history . . . before it repeats itself?
In A Cry from the Dust, Carrie Stuart Parks utilizes her own background as a celebrated, FBI-trained forensic artist to blend fact and fiction into a stunning mystery.

10405270_10152463426019828_2876436928052417913_nCarrie Stuart Parks is an award-winning fine artist and internationally known forensic artist. She teaches forensic art courses to law enforcement professionals and is the author/illustrator of numerous books on drawing. In the shadow of the Mormon church, a 19th-century conspiracy is about to be shattered by a 21st-century forensic artist.
In 1857, a wagon train in Utah was assaulted by a group of militant Mormons calling themselves the Avenging Angels. One hundred and forty people were murdered, including unarmed men, women, and children. The Mountain Meadows Massacre remains controversial to this day–but the truth may be written on the skulls of the victims.
When renowned forensic artist Gwen Marcey is recruited to reconstruct the faces of recently unearthed victims at Mountain Meadows, she isn’t expecting more than an interesting gig . . . and a break from her own hectic life.
But when Gwen stumbles on the ritualized murder of a young college student, her work on the massacre takes on a terrifying new aspect, and research quickly becomes a race against modern-day fundamentalist terror.
As evidence of a cover-up mounts–a cover-up spanning the entire history of the Mormon church–Gwen finds herself in the crosshairs of a secret society bent on fulfilling prophecy and revenging old wrongs.

“Renowned forensic and fine artist Parks’ action-packed and compelling tale of suspense is haunting in its intensity. Well researched and written in an almost journalistic style, this emotionally charged story is recommended for fans of Ted Dekker, Mary Higgins Clark, and historical suspense.”
-Book Verdict Starred Review and the inspirational debut of the month.

“Parks, in her debut novel, has clearly done her research and never disappoints to when it comes to crisp dialogue, characterization, or surprising twists and turns.”  -Publishers Weekly

“Parks’ fast-paced and suspenseful debut novel is an entertaining addition to the inspirational genre. Her writing is polished. and the research behind the novel brings credibility to the story. An excellent book that’s sure to put Carrie Stuart Parks on readers’ radar.” –4 star RT Book Review

“What impresses most about this first novel is the research into Mormon history and the authoritative familiarity with the workings of forensic art. These and the swift pace, the strong characterizations, the rich detail of setting, and historical possibility all make for a page-turner that Latter-day Saints will ponder for days.” -Association for Mormon Letters
