BB26-40. Matthew Currie’s MC Volts Electric

Building your business with Sara Troy and her guest Matt Currie. On air from October 6th

My life has followed what I think of as a pretty typical path: finish school, figure out what you want to do for a living, work hard, buy a home, have a family, and build a successful life. Easy, right? Maybe once upon a time it was, but life is a journey and times have changed. Working hard doesn’t always guarantee success, and success doesn’t always mean owning a home, having a high-paying career, or checking all of the traditional boxes we were taught to strive for. Through my own journey in the electrical trade, I eventually reached a point where I wanted to build something of my own and create a company based on the way I believe people should be treated — with honesty, respect and integrity. That became the foundation for MC Volts Electric. I’m still very much in the middle of that journey.

I’m building the company day by day, learning the business, networking, building relationships and figuring things out as I go. I’m not at a point where I’ve achieved financial freedom or have everything figured out; I’m simply trying to build a sustainable future for my family while continuing to do work that I genuinely love and being the kind of business owner and person I can be proud of. That experience has changed the way I think about success and what it should look like for the next generation. Maybe success isn’t about reaching some predetermined finish line or having everything figured out — maybe it’s about building something meaningful, providing for the people you love, doing work you’re proud of, and staying true to your values along the way. My hope is that sharing my journey through the trades and building MC Volts Electric can encourage others to look beyond the traditional definition of success, recognize the opportunities that exist outside of the expected path, and understand that you don’t have to have it all figured out to start building something of your own.

I was born on November 11, 1987, in Toronto, alongside my twin brother Michael. I grew up in a small town called Duntroon in southern Ontario, and after high school I spent several years working different jobs before deciding I wanted to pursue a trade and build a career with more opportunity and long-term stability. I came west to complete my electrical apprenticeship, finding work in Alberta’s oil industry while working toward my BC apprenticeship. When it came time to choose a place to attend trade school, I picked a random town on a map of British Columbia, Kamloops, and that random choice ended up changing the course of my life. It was there that I met my wife, Tyanaa. Several years later we married and eventually made our way back to Vancouver Island, where Tyanaa is originally from. Today, we live in Nanaimo with our two sons, Ryker and Kayden, and I’m the owner of MC Volts Electric, where I’ve been able to turn the trade I chose years ago into a business and a life that I’m proud of.

MH25-50. Reconnection with Colleen Franklin

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Colleen Franklin (RCC), on air from December 16th

I became a counsellor because I wanted to help people understand themselves and their struggles in a way that opens the door to healing, growth, and joy again. So many people move through life feeling disconnected from who they really are, and I’m passionate about helping them reconnect with themselves and find a steadier, more hopeful way forward. My work focuses on supporting people who are carrying trauma, burnout, and overwhelm—people who often feel lost in the noise of life and need a space to breathe and realign. I want my clients to feel seen, heard, and valued for the incredible worth they bring into the world. I deeply believe people have a strength within them they don’t always recognize. They have already survived and overcome so much, and yet they continue to show up, strive, and fight for something better. They deserve the support that honours that resiliency and helps them move toward the life they want.

I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor based in Nanaimo, BC, and the founder of Sandstone Counselling. My path into this work grew from a lifelong curiosity about how people make sense of their emotions and navigate the harder seasons of life. Over time, I’ve built a practice grounded in compassion, clarity, and a deep belief that people deserve to feel reconnected to themselves and feel joy in their life. Today, I support adults working through trauma, burnout, overwhelm, grief, and life transitions, as well as first responders. Outside of my counselling work, I’m a mom, a nature lover, and someone who values calm, connection, and authenticity. Whether I’m in session or out in the community, my goal is to create spaces where people feel supported, understood, and empowered to move forward in a way that feels true to them.
