ES24-32. Norma Burnson, Veterans for Earth

Eco Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Norma Burnson, on air from August 6th

“Together we can keep Mother Earth vibrant and alive.”

Norma says that she joined the U.S. Navy 10 days after my 18th birthday.
Boot camp took place in Orlando, Florida. Eight weeks later, my first tour of duty was at the Naval base in Rota, Spain. It was the beginning of my freedom, and total happiness.
I met my husband, Kevin. We have been together 50 years, and have never been separated since.
We traveled throughout Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany, Gibraltar, Morocco, Japan, Taiwan, enjoyed a lovely cruise around the Caribbean, and visited Mexico as well.
Upon returning to the States, I used my G.I. Bill, and attended the University of Illinois at Chicago. I was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest ( date) and most prestigious honor society in the United States. Then I spent a few years taking classes at The Art Institute of Chicago.
From there I worked as an International Trade Specialist, involved with the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, spearheading seminars. In addition was head of the membership committee for the International Association of Greater Chicago and
WIT, Women in International Trade.
Amongst other rewards, I was honored to receive The International Women’s Leadership Association, in recognition for my contribution to Family – Career – Community, recognized as a Woman of Outstanding Leadership.

In the early 90’s, I established my own company. My work consisted of setting up the International Trade Department for manufacturing companies. Either in house or off site.
I had the great opportunity to teach a class on International Trade at Oakton Community College for 8 years.
This was when my health began to deteriorate, and I received the diagnosis of congestive heart failure, on top of chronic asthma.
Confined in bed, (30 years) I used my time painting, needlepoint and reading. One day, out of the blue, I received an invitation from Sir Richard Branson to participate in a zoom meeting.
Sir Branson had invited entrepreneurs from all around the world to work on Plan B, because Plan A was leading us towards non sustainable practices.
Stuck in bed, I realized I could help the cause by writing, and that way become an active participant working towards Plan B.
That is when Sustainable Food for the Globe came to be. To date I have participated in the MIT Solve Lab Challenge Team Leader (2016, 2017), authored 8 books, and have 3 other projects in the making, including The Sustainable Food for the Globe Foundation.
In addition I got involved with the Global Citizens Circle. Since Sustainable Food for the Globe’s inception, I have met movers and shakers from around the world. All sharing their advocacy of healing Mother Earth, and working for the better good of all.
Sustainable Food for the Globe champions food production, food security, rescuing wasted food, and food deserts.
Due to my fragile health we left Chicago and moved to the country. During the last 6 years, my health has improved, slowly but steadily. Currently, my health issues are Asthma, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, congestive heart failure, kidney deterioration, anxiety attacks, PTSD, insomnia, nightmares, night frights, and cold sweats.

That being said, all my body of work is conducted via an iPa, and an iPhone.
Bedridden, I enjoy working with over 5,000 colleagues and friends from all around the world.
There is one thing that infuriates me, it is when a person falls into the helplessly hopeless, “Someone should do something!” As civilly as possible, my response is “You are somebody, do something!”
There are so many resources available, just by doing a Google search, one can research thousands of topics, find and get in touch with people and organizations that are already working on fixing these problems.
It is a fact that for every problem we are facing on Mother Earth, there is a solution. Unfortunately the very powerful corporations around the world make sure to hide these solutions, especially if that solution hurts their bottom line.
What do I believe?

1) “Together we can keep Mother Nature vibrant and alive”,

2) “A lion is like the truth, all things being equal, set it free and it will pretty much take care of itself”, and the most important of my convictions,

3) A lion is born to face death everyday, fear is not an option.”
Sara, thank you for inviting me for an interview, it is truly an honor.

  • What is meant by “escaping the Meatrix”?
  • A plant-based person saves the life of one animal everyday
  • The environmental impact and effects of the meat-eating industry on the planet
  • Eating meat is not sustainable — the Earth’s resources are not infinite
  • Indoctrination and why we don’t question eating meat
  • Why are we taught to care for certain animals but not others? Speciesism – some animals are pets, others are food
  • The cozy relationship between the Meatrix and the US government: “I don’t like to get into politics too much, but food is political.”
  • Meat industry spent 200 million just lobbying against climate change legislation
  • Marketing meat – ever consider how some of the most effective marketing campaigns revolve around the consumption of meat and animal products? Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner; Pork. The Other White Meat; The Incredible Edible Egg; Got Milk?
  • The shift from local farms to big conglomerates
  • In researching the book, he discovered that the top 9 of 11 causes of deaths in the US could be reduced by a plant-based lifestyle
  • The impact of meat on lung function – the same as chronic smoking
  • Alzheimer’s – the connection between animal-based foods and blood supply to our brains
  • Busting meat myths: Evolution – we evolved to eat meat, didn’t we?

Stuart Waldner is an activist and an author who invites readers to take the red pill as they Escape the Meatrix, the title of his debut non-fiction book, written after he transitioned to a plant-based diet in 2008. As his health improved, he felt better, and the more he learned about the statistical connections between our dietary choices and the worldwide climate crises we face, the more he felt an urgency to tell other people —for our health and for the planet.?

Waldner spent nearly two decades exploring Earth’s greatest wonders and connecting with sacred sites around the globe. When he’s not advocating for the health of people and the planet, he spends time playing with his dogs, cooking plant-based foods, running, and restoring his 128-year-old Victorian home.

ECO22-18 Lisa D. Foster is the ‘Bag Lady,’

ECO Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Lisa D. Foster, on air from May 3rd

Lisa D. Foster: is an entrepreneur, environmentalist, and author of ‘Bag Lady,’ who took the germ of a green living idea and grew it into a national business phenomenon. When she realized that Americans were throwing away a billion bags a day, Lisa D. Foster discovered reusable bags. Over the next twelve years, she changed the way Americans shopped. She remained true to her original purpose to reduce plastic waste and beat the odds to create a thriving company with an environmental mission.

Recounting my experience as a purpose-driven entrepreneur, my story provides a blueprint for using entrepreneurship to make the world better.

I’m very excited to announce that my book, Bag Lady: How I Started a Business for a Greener World and Changed the Way America Shops, released on Earth Day, April 22, 2022.

Those of you who have known me for a while may remember me in my previous career as a leading supplier of reusable bags in the US. If you have known me a really long time, you might even remember me as the high school English teacher I once was.

About a year ago, during the lockdown in the middle of the winter of Covid, I sat down to write about becoming obsessed with reducing plastic waste and transforming myself into the Bag Lady, an entrepreneur on a mission to get Americans to adopt reusable bags. Last fall, I found Tim Ward, publisher of Changemakers Books for John Hunt Publishing, who recognized the value of my story for other people that want to make a difference in their communities.

When I first learned about reusable shopping bags in 2005, the US was throwing away a billion plastic bags a day. The impacts of all those bags on our environment and our taxes kept me up at night. It hit my moral center. Getting other people to switch to reusable bags became for me, a moral imperative. I believed that if American shoppers knew what I knew, they would switch to reusable bags too. So, I did what any good English teacher would do. I took the facts about bags and turned them into a story. Then I took the story and turned it into the basis for starting a business for a greener world.

When I started, I had no idea how to build a business. I was an English teacher making cold calls overlooking the faculty parking lot. Very quickly, I found myself building an international supply chain and managing major accounts. I had to overcome the naysayers, an insanely steep learning curve, and my own mistakes. Ultimately, I beat the odds and created a thriving company with an environmental mission.

Now, I’m sharing the lessons I learned to inspire others to do the same.

ECO21-06 Patrick Moore, Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom

ECO Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Patrick Moore, on air from February 9th

Dr. Patrick Moore, is the author of the book Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom, with 11 chapters exposing the many environmental scare stories repeated daily in the media. Dr. Moore was a co-founder of Greenpeace and currently sits on the Board of Directors of the CO2 Coalition. Here is Dr. Patrick Moore’s description of his unique thesis as presented in Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom.”It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs.  Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists – all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject – to tell them the truth. This is my effort, after 50 years as a scientist and environmental activist, to expose the misinformation and outright lies used to scare us and our children about the future of the Earth.  Direct observation is the very basis of science. Without verified observation, it is not possible to know the truth.

https://soundcloud.com/plv-radio/eco21-06-patrick-moore-fake-invisible-catastrophes-and-threats-of-doom

That is the sharp focus of this book.”The book contains 98 color photographs, illustrations, and charts. A key target audience is parents who do not approve of the “progressive” school curriculum and its alarmism about the future of civilization and the natural world.

Dr. Patrick Moore has been a leader in the international environmental field for more than 40 years. He is a co-founder of Greenpeace and served for nine years as President of Greenpeace Canada and seven years as a Director of Greenpeace International. As the leader of many campaigns, Dr. Moore was a driving force shaping policy and direction while Greenpeace became the world’s largest environmental activist organization.
