IG24-05. Mark Springer, Words, Faith, and Science

Ignite Your Heart and Soul with Sara Troy and her guest Mark Springer, on air from January 30th

Examining the Extraordinary Relationship Between Words, Faith, and Science

“We live in a time when the word-created world has morphed into the information age — a time not only of great acceleration of written communication, but of expansion of the nature of language into both that of the logic of computers, and more-recently the unveiling of the biochemical words of DNA,” says Springer. In an interview, he can talk about:

  • What if we can uncover the DNA of words and find a genetic basis for our thoughts?
  • What if an algorithm can turn words into DNA and the DNA of someone like Shakespeare could be implanted or injected into people today?
  • What if there is a thought genome and we can edit out certain thoughts or ideas?
  • What if we could preserve our thoughts and memories and commercialize their sale?
  • What if books can be turned into living souls?
  • The concept that our lives give way over time to the words we have said, or that have been said about us; the memories others have of us

Flesh Becomes Words is a story about the technological breakthrough of finding a technology that can translate the natural “flesh” language of DNA into the words of the English language. It pits Science versus God as a way of not proving the existence of one at the expense of the other, but instead, shows how the facts in science reveal the truth of God’s words. “The truth of God’s words endures, while the observable facts of science are subject to change. Facts are from the visible sense-bound world. Truth comes from the eternal spiritual world. Flesh Becomes Words chronicles how scientific discoveries in the invisible molecular world, such as DNA and its applications in the science of life, are metaphors for underlying invisible spiritual truths.”

For example, the two strands of the double-helical structure of DNA are referred to as the sense and nonsense strands, or the coding and non-coding strands. This is representative of the spiritual strands of good and evil intertwined in our souls, with us being left with the decision of choosing which strand to express in the words we speak.

“The thought life is the essence of who we are as people,” shares Springer. “It is our soul, which is our mind. Our mind is often associated with our brain, but in Flesh Becomes Words, memory or thoughts have been discovered to have a genetic basis in the blood; the DNA of white blood cells. This is significant because it expands the mind or soul to being the intersection of body and spirit rather than a physiological attribute of the brain.”

IG24-04. Darci Lang and the 90%

Ignite Your Heart and Soul with Sara Troy and her guest Darci Lang, on air form January 23rd

Darci’s 90% Philosophy Series starts here. Focus on the 90% represents a concept that one simple tool can change the way you view your life. Darci believes each of us holds a magnifying glass and’ we get to choose what to do with it. We can focus it on the negative 10% in our lives – those things and people that bother us and drag us down – or we can choose to focus on the 90% in our lives that is positive and empowers us to be and feel our best. What we focus on determines how we live our lives. Darci will challenge where you focus your magnifying glass when reflecting on yourself (looking after the person in the mirror), the people around you (leading, working and supporting others) and your personal life (being a positive influence at home and an example of wellness for others to follow). The Focus on the 90% philosophy helps individuals reframe the way they look at, and think about their work, interactions and relationships with others.

Going into your memory box to slowly unpack the 10%, to understand it, release it or let it be your propeller to move you forward, for your 90% living is waiting for you to truly live.

IG23-46. Aryeh Ben David says Love is what Judaism is all about.

Ignite Your Heart and Soul with Sara Troy and her guest Areyh Ben David, on air form November 14th

The Secret of Love: A Glimpse into the Mystical Wisdom of Rav Kook  It’s obviously intended for a Jewish audience, but the principles and wisdom of Rav Kook really applies to everyone. It’s about how to become a more loving human being.

This is a book about love, about how to become a more loving human being. It has been inspired by the writings of the contemporary mystic, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook (1865-1935). Author Aryeh Ben David says, “Though this may not be what we learned in school or synagogue, becoming a more loving human being is really what Judaism is all about.

And even more than becoming more loving human beings in our personal relationships—don’t we sense that the larger world today is in desperate need of more love? The brokenness and anger present in Jewish life seems irreparable. Jews from different religious denominations and ideological views cannot sit together, much less respect each other’s positions and love each other. Our political arena has become toxic and awash with animosity.”

In our interview, Areyh Ben David can talk about some of the more surprising and insightful things he has learned:

  • Why Aryeh says that loving does not come to him naturally; the ways his life has changed since embracing Rav Kook’s approach to living a Jewish life
  • Why love as a purely emotional experience is restrictive. It is limited to the people we want to be with and can sometimes be selfish and self-serving
  • Our pleasure almost always derives from the achievement of a goal, and rarely on the process necessary to achieve that goal. What would our daily to-do list look like if we loved not only the product but also the process? Maybe it would look like this: Find God’s light while getting dressed; while preparing food; while waiting in line; while driving to work; while cleaning up. Find God’s light now
  • Loving all of humanity — how we can shift our perspective, to come from a place of humility with regard to other people’s opinions and ideologies
  • Obstacles to loving: Is there such a thing as “too much love?” Isn’t that contradictory to everything we’re talking about?
  • Why too much love cannot sustain a relationship for a long period of time – for relationships to stand the test of time, we need to periodically put boundaries in place

“All of the Torah — ethics, mitzvot, learning, and practice — come to remove the obstacles that prevent an all-encompassing love from expanding and spreading to every corner of life, everywhere.” —Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook
