MH23-38. Nick Motycka from PTSD to Breakthrough.

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Nick Motycka, on air September 19th

After a 15 plus year career in law enforcement I had unresolved trauma to process. After a breakthrough, formerly known as a breakdown, I knew that I needed to face these traumas and set off on a path to do just that. But, after a year and half of traditional therapies I was not getting back to myself. With my back up against the wall I found a Shaman / Psychologist and psychedelic assisted therapy. In one afternoon, I not only faced my collected traumas but I successfully processed them.

After experiencing this profound healing, I am on a mission to share my story to show others that there is hope and alternatives to traditional western therapies. My story has the potential to help anyone suffering with unprocessed trauma. Healing is very possible and leads to growth, as my story will show.

Nick grew up in Alberta with a father who was a member of the RCMP. This along with his wounded inner child had a major influence on his law enforcement career choice. Nick went on to spend his entire adult life, 23 years, in various enforcement related positions; security, loss prevention, bylaw services, Canada Customs, Court and Prisoner Services, as a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and finally as a member of the Calgary Police Service. Nick spent time on the street with both agencies, in a Crime Reduction Unit, Drug Unit, Drug Undercover Street Team, Gang Suppression Team and finally a short stint in the Public and Media Relations Unit before his breakthrough, formally known as a breakdown, on September 16th, 2020.

Nick was diagnosed with PTSD and set off on a journey to finally process the traumas collected during his career in law enforcement. A year and half in, countless psychologist and occupational therapist appointments later, he was able to finally get the help that he needed; one psilocybin assisted therapy session. With clear intentions and a strong willingness to do the work, Nick went from severe PTSD to no longer meeting the criteria for any diagnosis.

With a new sense of clarity and the amazing support of his family, Nick resigned from the only profession that he had ever known. Nick now spends his time sharing his story of healing and post traumatic growth while going all in on his dream to bring consciously made, natural fiber clothing to the world through his apparel brand; Flow State Designs!

MH23-22. Dr. Jo Anne White & Neurodivergents.

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Dr Jo Anne White, on air from May 30th

People are often made to feel less than because of their differences whether thinking or communicating differently, their race, faith or gender it can set someone up for self-doubt, failure, depression even suicide. I know what it’s like to feel like an outcast. My teachers believed I wouldn’t amount to anything because of my unintentional mirror writing. I had to painfully overcome this and override the voices and messages in my head that I wasn’t good enough. We don’t have to fall victim to other people’s judgments of us. We can also shift the internal negative mind talk that was instilled in us to be able to gain confidence in ourselves, advance, succeed and thrive. Many people are held back because of other’s opinions which devalue them. Unfortunately they can take on another’s beliefs about themselves which may be untrue. It’s not only up to us to change that perspective and mindset for ourselves, it’s important to honor, respect and celebrate other’s differences as well as our own. I’ve had to overcome these challenges in my own life and I am equipped to help people access their gifts, uncover their purpose and gain more confidence and positivity about themselves, their lives, relationships, their abilities and their mission.

As someone who is neurodivergent and who struggled with learning differently growing up, it was important for Jo Anne White to help people considered atypical, often unaccepted and judged harshly as she was by her elementary school teachers. Although not easy, she changed the limiting belief in her brain, brought on by others’ judgements that she wasn’t capable and wouldn’t succeed. She pursued education and went on to get a Master’s in Education/Special Education and a PhD/Doctorate. Early in her career, she taught children with special needs and was also an adjunct Instructor in the Special Education Department at Temple University. Dr. White was then hired as the Executive Director of a comprehensive educational, clinical, vocational, autistic, residential and community program for children and youth with special needs at Bancroft, in New Jersey. She later served as their Director of Research, Evaluation and Training for all of Bancroft programs.

Intuitive messaging called for different work and international bestselling award winning author, Jo Anne, became a certified coach and counselor and branched out into her own consulting and coaching practice. Due to her own challenges and injuries, she sought alternative treatments (such as Reiki Healing, hypnotherapy and more) when traditional medicine didn’t help heal her body. They proved successful so she received training/certifications and incorporated them into her treatment, teaching, coaching and healing approaches which she still successfully uses today with her clients.

Currently, Dr. White is recognized as a Goodwill Global Ambassador for civil and humanitarian work in education, entrepreneurship, coaching and women’s issues & named a Worldwide Branding Top Female Executive in Professional Coaching by Worldwide Who’s Who. As a certified life, spiritual and business coach, counselor and energy master teacher, she empowers and inspires men, women, families and businesses to achieve greater health and wellness, master success, realize their dreams, thrive and triumph. She’s also the executive producer and host of the Power Your Life Shows and a Featured Contributor for BIZCATALYST 360°.

The author was born and raised in Colorado and lived in Arizona until 2012: when she moved to Oregon. Meanwhile, missing her grown children and grandchildren, she moved back to Arizona in 2021. She has been featured as a guest on many podcasts and radio shows, sharing her recovery journey while raising awareness about addiction. She has maintained sobriety since 1993. With her diagnosis of Fibro in 2005 and other medical conditions, she is committed to her recovery of healing while helping others do the same as a tireless advocate and a woman who has come out the other side of addictions, trauma, and much more as a “Survivor and Warrior.” Today, Deb is focused on writing and sharing her experiences with Fibro and chronic fatigue/pain; as heart-tugging as the downside can be, it is one of pure perseverance. Deb has been happily married to her soulmate and is a mother of two grown successful children. When the author is not advocating, speaking, or writing, she enjoys reading, painting, and traveling. But her “#1 happy place” is spending loads of time with all her grandchildren she adores. Deb and her husband continue to reside (sent with love effect)

MH23-13. Mediating Conflict with Kimberly Best.

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy with guest Kimberly Best, on air March 28th

We have thought of peace as the passive and war as the active way of living. The opposite is true. War is not the most strenuous life. It is a kind of rest-cure compared to the task of reconciling our differences…. The world will be regenerated by the people who rise above these passive ways and heroically seek, by whatever hardship, by whatever toil, the methods by which people can agree.”
? Mary Parker Follett.

Kimberly says that, mediation, negotiation, and arbitration are dispute resolution skills that also include facilitation.  The scope of use is anywhere from interpersonal to countries at war.  Problems can be identified, their impact discussed, and each person’s needs identified in order to resolve the conflict.  An easy way to describe it is collaborative problem solving.
