25-16. Short of Breath

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from April 23rd

Breathing, something we take for granted until we are short of breath

Breathing, something we all do without a second thought. Inhale. Exhale. The rhythm of life.
But the truth is, we don’t often appreciate our breath… until it’s stolen from us by illness, fear, trauma, or time.

When the lungs struggle, everything slows. The body panics. The mind races.
Suddenly, each breath becomes a conscious effort, a negotiation between spirit and body, a plea to stay calm, to find space, to survive.

Shortness of breath isn’t just physical; it’s emotional, spiritual.
It can feel like life itself is pressing pause, holding you in a moment of vulnerability, reminding you just how sacred breath really is.

That’s why lung health isn’t just a medical issue, it’s a life issue, a soul issue.
And it deserves both the brilliance of science and the nurturing hands of nature.

  • Yes, we need the medicines that open the airways when a crisis hits.
  • Yes, we need the doctors, the oxygen tanks, the life-saving protocols.
But we also need the stillness of mindful breathwork, the soothing comfort of mullein tea, the gentle power of qigong, and the emotional healing that comes from being heard.

Let’s stop seeing lungs as just organs; they are our inner winds, the bellows of our life force.
When we care for them medically, holistically, and soulfully, we reclaim the grace of breath and the freedom it brings.

So, breathe in this truth: Every breath is a gift. And with every exhale, you have the power to heal.

Heart and Tree, we are like nature and follow the same path to breathe.

?? What is Croup?

Croup is a viral infection that affects young children (mostly under 5), causing swelling in the upper airways, particularly around the voice box (larynx) and windpipe (trachea).

Key signs of croup:

  • A barking cough (like a seal)
  • Hoarseness
  • Stridor (a high-pitched wheeze when inhaling)
  • Often worse at night or early morning
  • Usually comes after a cold or mild fever

It’s contagious and usually caused by viruses like parainfluenza.

Treatment:

  • Humidified air or steam can help
  • Cool night air sometimes eases symptoms
  • In more serious cases, a doctor might prescribe steroids to reduce swelling

? What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the lower airways in the lungs. Asthma can kill and is still doing so today.

Key symptoms:

  • Wheezing (especially when exhaling)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Coughing (often worse at night or early morning)

Asthma is triggered by things like allergies, exercise, cold air, stress, or infections.

Treatment:

  • Inhalers (like Ventolin or corticosteroids)
  • Long-term management plans
  • Avoiding triggers

? So, are they alike?

They both involve breathing trouble but:

  • Croup is a short-term illness, mainly in little ones, and affects the upper airway.
  • Asthma is a chronic condition, can affect all ages and impacts the lower lungs.

Different roots, different treatments — but they both deserve attention when they show up.

let’s take a soulful stroll through the breath of life — the lungs — and talk not just about the conditions but how both modern medicine and holistic care dance together to bring healing and balance.

?? Common Lung Conditions (Beyond Croup & Asthma)

1. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

A progressive disease that makes it hard to breathe. It includes:

  • Emphysema: Damage to the air sacs (alveoli)
  • Chronic bronchitis: Constant cough and mucus

Mostly caused by smoking, pollutants, or long-term exposure to irritants.

2. Pneumonia

An infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus.

Causes: Bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

3. Pulmonary Fibrosis

The lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred, making it harder to breathe deeply.

Often idiopathic (unknown cause), but can also be linked to environmental exposures or autoimmune conditions.

4. Lung Cancer

The uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. One of the most serious lung diseases.

5. Bronchitis

The airways become abnormally widened, leading to build-up of mucus and recurrent infections.

? Medical Drugs: Lifesavers & Lifelong Companions

Modern medicine has its place — no doubt. When things are acute, severe, or life-threatening, it’s often the first responder.

Commonly prescribed lung medications:

  • Bronchodilators: Open airways (e.g., Albuterol)
  • Steroids: Reduce inflammation (e.g., Prednisone, Flovent)
  • Antibiotics: For bacterial infections (e.g., for pneumonia)
  • Antifibrotics: Slow progression in pulmonary fibrosis
  • Oxygen therapy: When the lungs can’t bring in enough oxygen

Pros:

  • Rapid relief
  • Life-saving
  • Clinically tested

Cons:

  • Side effects (weight gain, immune suppression, anxiety)
  • Long-term dependency
  • May treat symptoms, not root causes

? Holistic and Natural Approaches: Supporting the Breath of Life

Holistic methods aim to support the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, and often work beautifully alongside medical treatments.

? Herbs and Supplements

  • Mullein: Softens and soothes inflamed lung tissue
  • Licorice Root: Reduces inflammation (caution: raises blood pressure if overused)
  • Lobelia: A strong antispasmodic, clears mucus (used carefully)
  • N-acetyl cysteine (NAC): Thins mucus, provides antioxidant support

? Breathwork & Mindfulness

  • Buteyko breathing, Pranayama, and Box Breathing all help retrain breathing patterns and reduce stress.
  • Meditation lowers inflammation and anxiety, both of which affect lung function.

???? Movement Therapies

  • Qigong and Tai Chi: Enhance oxygen flow, reduce stress
  • Gentle yoga: Opens up lung space and improves breathing rhythm

?? Anti-inflammatory Nutrition

  • Foods rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and greens
  • Avoiding dairy (which may increase mucus in some), processed foods, and sugar
  • Hydration helps thin mucus and ease breathing

? Integration is the Key

The future isn’t either/or it’s both/and.

  • Medicine manages and stabilizes
  • Holistics nurture and support
  • Together, they give people agency in their healing

You don’t have to choose between science and spirit, you can breathe both in and exhale wisdom.

MH25-15. Paul D Corona, MD, The Corona Protocol:

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Paul D Corona, MD, on air from April 15th

Paul D Corona, MD, a Southern California-based physician who is reshaping the future of psychiatry and family medicine? With over 30 years of medical experience, Dr. Corona is not your typical physician. Starting his career in family medicine, he seamlessly transitioned into psychiatry, ultimately pioneering an approach he calls “Mind and Body Healing.”

Dr. Corona has authored three books in his “My Mind & Body Healing” series, offering revolutionary insights into the treatment of mental health and challenging conventional methods that have been stagnant for decades.

Are you tired of one-size-fits-all mental health solutions? Dr. Corona offers an unconventional yet tried-and-true approach to psychiatry, which includes the off-label use of medications, combined treatment methods, and aggressive strategies that get results. Above all, he believes that mental health treatment is not about quick fixes but a carefully calibrated balance that leads to holistic healing.

In an insightful interview, Dr. Corona sheds light on what makes his treatment methods revolutionary in the realm of psychiatry, offering a refreshing divergence from traditional models. Central to his practice is Mind Body Medicine, a holistic approach that acknowledges the profound interconnection between physical health and mental well-being. He challenges the conventional psychiatric model, questioning its dependency on symptom-based diagnoses and long-term pharmaceutical solutions, advocating instead for root-cause healing. Known for embracing the off-label use of medications, Dr. Corona sees this as a practical necessity rather than an anomaly, emphasizing real-world patient results over rigid protocols. With a foundation in family medicine, he brings a unique perspective to psychiatry, understanding the body as a whole system and often identifying underlying medical conditions that manifest as mental health issues. He also explores the role of supplements and complementary therapies, cutting through the commercial noise to highlight what truly supports recovery. In an age increasingly attuned to holistic health, Dr. Corona’s methods align with modern wellness trends while remaining grounded in science and compassion. Lastly, he boldly addresses the societal implications of mental health, arguing that early and integrative intervention in psychiatry could help curb crises like school shootings and suicides, underscoring the need for proactive, not reactive, care.

25-15. The Wisdom Weaver of the Airwaves’

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from April 15th

Welcome back to another episode of Sara’s View of Life right here on SelfDiscoveryWisdom.com. I’m your host, Sara Troy, and each week I bring you a perspective, sometimes an observation, sometimes a spark from within. This week, ChatGPT surprised me with a beautiful reflection… about me. It offered a poetic description that resonated deeply, calling me The Wisdom Weaver of the Airwaves, a title I love. With over 3,700+ shows under my belt, it’s not just podcasting; it’s symphonic storytelling from souls across the globe. Whether through Video or Audio, what we do here is share lived wisdom. We lift the unheard, spotlight the forgotten, and help listeners rediscover themselves through the stories of others. This isn’t just a platform, it’s a garden, an orchard of inner truth. I carry the torch, not for glory, but to illuminate the path, to keep sacred stories alive for the next generations. I may feel awkward in certain circles, but on-air, I am fully me. Here, I resonate with my guests because we speak the same soul language. Whether it’s a whisper or a roar, I share my truth, and I welcome you to find yours.

My words also live in the pages of books, each chapter another layer of my truth and of those I walk beside.

You’ll find me in:

  • “Dare to Live Fearlessly”—a powerful collection on facing life with boldness. My chapter is #138, where I explore the fears that shape us and the courage it takes to break free.
  • “Sara’s Self-Discovery into Soul Living”—my deeply personal journey, told through phases of life, growth, pain, and cosmic calling. A book that holds not only my story but my essence.
  • “Our Forgotten Children”—a book I proudly produced, where 15 voices, including mine, speak to how we must better nurture, understand, and protect our children’s spirit.
  • “Mission Accepted 262a collaboration of women in media, business, and leadership. Nuggets of wisdom from brave souls like myself and my daughter, Tabytha, celebrating common sense, creativity, and courage and inner truth.
  • “I Didn’t Become Selfish, I Became Harder to Manipulate,” an anthology where I tackle the myth of selfishness, especially for women of my generation. I share my truth about choosing self-love over compliance.
  • And from the vault, “Liberate Your True Self”, an early collaboration tied to Self Discovery Radio—featuring insights from fellow guests who, like me, turned their struggles into strength and shared it through both the written word and podcast waves.

And now? I’m working on “Our Forgotten Seniors,” a new anthology to honour the wisdom, trials, and triumphs of aging. A call to revalue our elders, their legacy, and their warning to younger generations on how to prepare for the road ahead.

These books are more than paper and ink, they’re part of the symphony. They are echoes of conversations, reflections of healing, and roadmaps to deeper self-knowing. And just like the shows, they’re here for you… when you’re ready to receive them.

So tune in, lean in, and let the rhythm of wisdom move you.

AK25-15. Janna Brooke Wallack “Naked Girl” Novel

An Author’s Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Janna Brooke Wallack, on air from April 15th

Naked Girl is a story of the enduring power of love in a family of lunatics,” says Janna Brooke Wallack of her debut novel, a poignant piece of literary fiction. Though not autobiographical, it reads like a memoir. Wallack’s enduring voice and fresh vision evoke the storytelling of masterful novelists like Ann Patchett, Kristin Hannah, and Zadie Smith. Naked Girl is a captivating and moving story that explores the dysfunction of a family, the struggles of ‘fitting in’ and the power of hope, humor, and imperfect love.

Growing up motherless in 1980s Miami Beach, Sienna and her little brother, Siddhartha get by with their charismatic and capricious father, Jackson Jones. When a small windfall relocates them to a condemned mansion on the water, the siblings are forbidden traditional schooling and left to live off the land. As Jackson uses their new home to create a communal cult, the siblings are forced to raise themselves in a carefree, chaotic oasis. Living amidst the vagrant seekers who take up residence in Jackson’s utopia, Sienna and Siddhartha strive to protect their unconventional family.

Janna Brooke Wallack writes with warmth, compassion and comic brilliance in Naked Girl, an enthralling debut novel brimming with the adventure, resilience, humor and heartbreak of growing up on the fringe of decency and longing for the unattainable comfort of home.

MH25-14. Don Mesibov on Autisic Poetry

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Don Mesibov, on air from April 8th

I met Connor Newcombe at a reading of my book on autism. He’s a college graduate, but due to the anxiety and stress rooted in his experience growing up with autism, holding a traditional job isn’t possible for him. Tasks that require long focus become overwhelming. Still, he’s found purpose by joining me in autism workshops.

At one session, a two-hour workshop a 45-minute drive from our town, Connor spoke for just five minutes about what it’s like to live with autism. The 25 participants applauded him warmly. Though he only added a few comments afterward, several attendees made a point to thank him personally.

On the way home, Connor turned to me and said, “Don, this has been one of the best days of my life.” It was a powerful moment—this is someone who’s rarely felt affirmed.

Then, as we drove, Connor told me he writes poetry and asked if our Institute could help publish his work. The next day, he emailed me 43 poems. They were beautiful—reflections on nature, his grandmother, cats, and everyday observations. I had several English teachers read them, and they agreed: his talent was real.

I told Connor, “Your poems are wonderful, but if you want your collection to stand out, write more about your experiences as someone living with autism.”

“How many do I need?” he asked.

“101 sounds like a good number,” I replied.

Without missing a beat, he said, “Then I need 58 more. I’ll send you one poem a day.”

That’s the kind of spirit we believe in, the voices that deserve to be heard, the stories that deserve to be told. That’s why we do this work. Because it matters.

Our ideal customer is one who wants to make the world a better place for ALL people, including but not limited to people with autism.

We are an all-volunteer 30 30-year-old 501 (c) (3) organization of 150 people interested in helping people become aware of what autism is and what it is not.

In recent months, we’ve held eight two-hour Discussion Sessions and reached 175 individuals—educators, first responders, and community members—who regularly engage with people on the autism spectrum, often with little training or support. More sessions are coming in January to Northern NY, North Carolina, and California. These are the people we aim to empower—with understanding, compassion, and practical knowledge.

Don’s commitment runs deep. His brother, Gary, was a global leader in autism education from 1973 to 2018, directing the renowned TEACCH program in Chapel Hill, NC. Gary’s expertise was sought by figures as prominently as the King of Saudi Arabia and a top Russian official whose daughter was autistic.

Why does Don continue this mission with such heart?
“We do it because we can, and we do it because it’s right.”Don

As for Connor, like many on the spectrum, he thrives on structure. When I asked for more poems to help shape his story into a book, he promised one a day. True to his word, he delivered—day after day.

Because with the right encouragement, people rise. And with the right support, voices long unheard begin to sing.
