RGC 18-46 A FOREVER FAMILY with Rob Schear

Raising Our Gifted Children with Sara Troy and her guest Rob Shear, on air November 13th.

ROB SCHEER Founder of Comfort Cases with Jon Sternfeld

A FOREVER FAMILY  a truly inspiring memoir by Rob Scheer, the founder of Comfort Cases, about his turbulent childhood in the foster care system and the countless obstacles and discrimination he endured in adopting his four children.

Rob Scheer never thought that he would be living the life he is now. He’s happily married to his partner and love of his life, he’s the father of four beautiful children, and he’s the founder of an organization that makes life better for thousands of children in the foster care system.

But life wasn’t always like this.

Growing up in an abusive household before his placement in foster care, Rob had all the odds stacked against him. Kicked out of his foster family’s home within weeks after turning eighteen—with a year left of high school to go—he had to resort to sleeping in his car and in public bathrooms. He suffered from drug addiction and battled with depression, never knowing when his next meal would be or where he would sleep at night. But by true perseverance, he was able to find his own path and achieve his wildest dreams.

Poignant, gripping, and inspiring, Rob’s story provides a glimpse into what it’s like to grow up in the foster care system and sheds necessary light on the children who are often treated without dignity. A courageous, candid account of life in the foster care system, his memoir is also a timely call to action.

Tsm 18-19 Comfort Cases changing children’s lives with Rob Scheer

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Robert Scheer, on air from May 8th

On any given day, nearly 437,500 youth in the foster care system in the United States.  Of the thousands of youth who enter the system each year, most arrive carrying little more than the clothes on their backs.  If they are afforded the opportunity to collect any personal belongings, many are then given a trash bag in which to place and carry their personal items.  It is a time of great upheaval and instability, and their first foster home placement is unlikely to be their last.  Many youths in foster care will be moved from home to home multiple times, carrying their life’s treasures in a trash bag.  At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity.  Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their own.  It is our mission as a charity to provide a proper bag, filled with comfort and essential items, to these brave youth in foster care on their journey to find them forever home.

Every child deserves to know that they matter.  When Comfort Cases provides a case to a child in need, we not only offer them new items that they can keep during their journey, we also provide them with dignity and the notion that someone cares about what they are going through.

We have now reached youth in foster care in 34 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and Canada.  We have distributed over 30,000 Cases.  We are so excited by the progress, but also remain steadfastly focused on all the kids we haven’t reached yet.  With nearly half a million kids in care in the US, the need is great, and we have lots of work to do!  Our goal is to put a Comfort Case in the hands of all of the kids in care.

TSM 17-15 Forster Children’s Comfort Cases with Rob Scheer

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Rob Scheer, on air from April 11th

“I remember the first day Amaya came to stay with us. She was four years old, moving into her third foster home and carrying her entire life in a white trash bag,” said Comfort Cases founder Rob Scheer.

“Having experienced foster care myself, I was disgusted to see a child forced to carry around their things like they were garbage. We took her out to buy new clothes and she picked out a Cinderella nightgown.”

“From that moment, I knew we needed to make a change.”

PROVIDING COMFORT AND SUPPORT FOR KIDS IN FOSTER CARE

Scheer founded Comfort Cases, a non-profit organization provides backpacks with essential items like toiletries, pajamas, activities and other items for children in foster care. The charity went from providing about 300 kits in 2013 to donating 25,000 to kids in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia foster care systems last year.

Rob is an outspoken advocate for children in foster care and speaks all over the country. He was recently honoured at the Family Equality Council Impact Awards in Los Angeles, Calif.

A LITTLE DIGNITY AND CARE GOES A LONG WAY, YOU ARE THE DIFFERENCE THAT IS NEEDED TO BUILD A BETTER SOCIETY.
