BB24-31. Jamie Martin – JEM Consulting.

Building Your Business with Sara Troy and her guest Jamie Martin, on air from July 30th

My journey in leadership began through working for bosses and companies that treated their employees poorly. Witnessing this mistreatment sparked a desire to change the status quo. I immersed myself in the study of servant leadership and adapted my leadership style to prioritize serving others. This approach centers on treating my team with empathy and understanding, particularly concerning mental health. By fostering a supportive environment, I focus on encouragement and perspective rather than immediate accountability and judgment. This leadership philosophy benefits everyone in the organization, promoting a culture of respect and compassion

“People will move mountains, when they feel valued, respected and understood”

Jamie Martin’s professional journey commenced at Starbucks, where foundational skills in customer service and operational excellence were cultivated from the ground up as a Barista. This early experience ignited Jamie’s passion for retail operations and laid the groundwork for a career marked by leadership and community advocacy.

Transitioning from Starbucks, Jamie advanced to roles at Walmart, initially serving as an Acting Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager. Here, Jamie gained extensive experience in managing large-scale operations, overseeing teams, and optimizing business processes. This tenure at Walmart provided invaluable insights into multi-unit retail management and strategic leadership.

Jamie’s career then took a pivotal turn at the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB), where Jamie excelled as a Senior Store Manager and Regional Manager. Managing operations across 20 locations within a unionized environment, Jamie not only oversaw multimillion-dollar budgets and led teams of up to 400 staff but also played a crucial role during the legalization of cannabis in British Columbia. Jamie navigated complex regulatory landscapes, developed compliance strategies aligned with the Cannabis Act, and fostered partnerships with government entities.

BB24-31. Rebecca Visser Stop Burnout

Building Your Business with Sara Troy and her guest Rebecca Visser, on air from July 30th

Even from a young age, I struggled with perfectionism and tried to control every aspect of my life to get ahead. Despite achieving a seemingly “perfect career” with a good title, salary, and accolades from my bosses and peers, I felt completely unfulfilled. This relentless pursuit to “achieve” throughout my life inevitably led to severe burnout. My only choice left was to take six months off to reconnect with myself.
In retrospect, I realized I was never living in the moment, always focused on the future or berating myself for past mistakes. Through coaching and other holistic practices, I’ve witnessed the power of letting go of limiting beliefs and connecting with our inner wisdom.

By sharing my story, I aim to help others find the peace and fulfillment I discovered on my journey. The world
needs more people pursuing their unique talents, so they can reconnect with their joy and we can better face societal challenges.

24-31. More than my Label

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from July 30th

I AM SO MUCH MORE THAN MY LABEL. Why do we become our label when all it is is a challenge we have to live with?

I have A.D.D. and Dyslexia, + and these are challenges I live with, but they do not define who I really am. I am so much more than these labels. They are just parts of my experience, not the essence of my identity. My true self is a complex, multifaceted individual with unique talents, passions, and perspectives that go beyond any label.

So, I choose to focus on what I can do, not on what isn’t meant for me. I embrace my strengths and refuse to see anything else as a weakness. I am committed to being the best version of myself, acknowledging my capabilities and celebrating the unique qualities that make me who I am.

It’s natural to feel frustrated when labels seem to define us more than we’d like. Labels can be limiting because they often focus on a single aspect of our identity or experience, overlooking the complexity and richness of who we are as individuals. Here are a few reasons why labels can become so prominent:

  1. Simplification: Labels simplify complex human experiences and identities into easy-to-understand categories. This can help others understand or relate to us but can also oversimplify and reduce our individuality.
  2. Society and Perception: Society often relies on labels for categorization and organization, which can lead to stereotyping or pigeonholing people into specific roles or expectations.
  3. Self-Identification: Sometimes, we internalize labels as a part of our self-identity, which can be both empowering and restrictive. A label can provide a sense of community and belonging but can also feel confining if it doesn’t capture the full scope of who we are.
  4. Communication: Labels can serve as a shorthand in communication, making it easier for others to understand certain traits or experiences, but they might not capture the full story.

To move beyond labels, it can be helpful to focus on the aspects of your identity and experiences that are meaningful to you. Embrace the diversity and complexity of who you are, and share your unique perspective with others. Remember, you are more than any label—you’re a multifaceted individual with a rich, unique enriched life.

JUST BE YOU IN ALL YOUR UNIQUE GLORY.

LM24-30. DeeAnn’s “Its My Time”

‘for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy and her guest DEEANN, on air from July 23rd

It’s My Time. In 2015, years after setting aside her larger musical dreams to dedicate herself to raising a family, multi-talented singer/songwriter, DeeAnn is back to create her legacy. Her latest album It’s My Time, currently receiving National airplay with Neal Sapper, New World n Jazz and featuring three original songs amidst a mix of folk, pop and jazz classics, is the latest manifestation of the Niagara Falls, NY native’s renewed vision of her life.

The singer laid the foundation for her newly burgeoning career with her cleverly titled 2017 collection Desperately Seeking DeeAnn, which was produced by contemporary jazz bassist, RiShon Odel (Brian Culbertson, Najee). When her father, popular Buffalo area jazz performer Frank DiMeo, learned she was finally embracing what he felt was her destiny as a jazz singer, he was thrilled.  Though she had previously sung pop and country professionally, he was the one who introduced her as a little girl to the music of Ella Fitzgerald and his favorite, Sarah Vaughan.

To pay tribute to her dad’s influence, DeeAnn invited him to sing two duets with her (“Unforgettable” and “Fly Me to the Moon”).  The collection also featured the blues and jazz influenced original tune, “Everybody’s Got a Story”, whose chorus served as her life’s new mission statement: “Everybody’s Got a Story/Everybody’s got a cross to bear/Everybody’s got something to say/So shine the light and spread your love.” The following year, DeeAnn was honored to be inducted into the Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame.

The singer soon had a painful story to tell.  The tragedy of losing her 23-year-old son William Michael Tompkins to a motorcycle accident, after she and Odel had completed most of the tracks of “It’s My Time’ threw DeeAnn’s life into a tailspin and delayed the project indefinitely.  Her original concept was to record an album of old standards, and the two had 90 percent of them.

When DeeAnn came back to the project she added a few new, very personal songs, starting with a heartrending, gospel-influenced version of “You Are My Sunshine”, a song she sang to William to put him to sleep when he was a child.  Odel’s sensitive yet rousing and inspirational production features members of the Buffalo Philharmonic String Quartet (Roman Mekhulnov).

Another original tune she added, the soulful ballad, “A Little Romance,” is a homage to the “angels” who helped her during her lowest points: “You help me pray, when my faith is shaken/You give me hope, help my soul awaken.” The other originals are the passionate love ballad “Here to Stay” and “Writing on the Wall,” a whimsical, hard hitting, brassy blues-rock breakup song, a duet with Mick Hayes that balances the poignancy of the album.

The other tracks on It’s My Time reveal DeeAnn as a masterful song interpreter and storyteller who turns words and melodies of legendary writers and artists into her own emotional narratives.  Drawing from a wide range of styles and eras, these include “Blue Skies,” “Summertime,” “Killing Me Softly,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Nearness of You” and “Fine and Mellow.”

Hailing from a small steel town outside of Buffalo, DeeAnn was raised in a musical family, learning standards that would eventually become part of her repertoire.  In addition to the smooth vocal stylings of her father Frank, she was inspired early on by Buffalo Blue Note legend, DoDo Green and attended multiple jazz jams.  During her early days as a pop/rock singer, she won Best Female Vocalist at the Buffalo Music Awards two years in a row.  Her later success as a country artist earned her placements on numerous radio CD compilations, resulting in airplay throughout the U.S and Europe.  When she returned to music as a jazz-blues singer in the mid-2010’s, she won Best Female Blues Vocalist at the Buffalo Night Life Music Awards and her 2019 EP Stay Here won Best Jazz CD from JazzBuffalo.org.

Tony Zambito, Executive Director of JazzBuffalo, says, “DeeAnn is not only a soulful powerhouse, but also a superb storyteller who’s emotionally charged performances create a deeply personal and wonderful listening experience for audiences.  Whether interpreting timeless classics or presenting her own originals, DeeAnn captivates listeners with her heartfelt delivery and genuine connection, making each concert and listen truly memorable.”
