AK23-9. Anika Savoy, and New York City Lunatic Asylum

Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Anika Savoy, on air from February 28th

Explore the history of the New York City Lunatic Asylum Award-winning, paranormal, historical romance author Anika Savoy

Life is hard enough without having to deal with ghosts following you around every day. Maggie O’Connor wishes that she did not have psychic gifts but coming from a long line of Irish female seers, she never had a choice. Faced with having to care for her departed sister’s orphaned baby, Maggie struggles to pay the rent while working for pennies at a local Bowery sweatshop. Her life goes from bad to worse when a wicked neighbor steals the baby.
Things look up when the handsome son of Maggie’s employer falls for her. Gershom understands that having psychic gifts does not necessarily make a woman crazy. If only the local judge agreed. When Maggie ends up at the New York City Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island, she must find a way to escape and return to Gershom’s loving arms.
Will Maggie be stuck in a madhouse forever? Even if she escapes, can she and Gershom rescue the lost baby? The obstacles seem insurmountable, but anything is possible with the assistance of ghostly helpers and Andrew Carnegie, one of America’s richest men.

Anika Savoy is an award-winning author and attorney who has always felt a supernatural pull. A healthy skeptic, she can’t deny her near-death experience and the shift it made in her life and writing. She attended McGill University and graduated with distinction in 1988 with a B.A. in English Literature. While at McGill, she won several creative writing contests. Thereafter, she wrote three historical romance novels. In 1998, Anika changed course and pursued her lifelong dream of becoming an attorney. She graduated from University of Cincinnati, College of Law with Dean’s Honors in 2001 and practiced law for almost 20 years. Now, Anika returns to her first love: writing historical romance. She endeavors to add paranormal elements that take readers into a fairy tale universe where ghosts and witches exist, and happy endings abound.

The Ghost In Her is the first in Anika Savoy’s Ungilded Series.

His Garden: Conversations with a Serial Killer

A lawyer gets inside the mind of a notorious New England serial killer in this award-winning and “grimly compelling” true crime (Kirkus).

For nine months of 2003, William Devin Howell went on a killing spree in and around New Britain, Connecticut. Seven people went missing; all of their bodies were eventually discovered in a wooded lot behind a strip mall. But the investigation that led to Howell’s arrest is only part of the story.

Attorney and author Anne K. Howard aka Anika Savoy, first contacted Howell while he was serving a fifteen-year sentence for one of his murders. He was about to be charged for the remaining six. A unique and disturbing friendship between the two began, comprised of written correspondence, face-to-face prison visits, and recorded phone calls. Over the course of years, Howell shared his troubled history with Howard. When his case was finally over, he told her every intimate, grizzly detail of how he became Connecticut’s most prolific serial killer.

In His Garden, Howard probes the complicated mind of William Devin Howell. It is a story that explores the eternal question of human evil and its impact on others, including the woman he chose to hear his horrific confession.

AK22-45. Peter Golenbock, Baseball Historian Author.

Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Peter Golenbock, on air from November 1st

As fans across the country watch with great excitement as Aaron Judge prepares to surpass the iconic Roger Maris’s home run tally, NY times bestselling author and baseball historian Peter Golenbock is sharing his insights into what this monumental event means for the game.

Legendary Baseball Writer/Historian Peter Golenbock on the intertwined legacies of Roger Maris and Aaron Judge

“Aaron Judge is about to break Roger Maris’ single-season home run record, and baseball fans everywhere should stand and applaud. In an era when every pitcher throws 95 miles an hour, making a home run hitting very difficult, the even-tempered Yankee slugger has performed with uncommon skill, class, and grace. When he contends that winning games are more important than setting records, you believe him. I cheered Roger when he broke Babe’s record, and I will do the same when Judge breaks Maris’s record. Amazingly, he’s also going to win the Triple Crown. All hail the judge.”

Very few manage to land a job working in the special services for the West African government of Côte d’Esperance. AK22-41. Janis R. Daly & The Unlocked Path

Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Janis Robinson Daly, on air from October 3rd

A “New Woman” of the Early 20th Century Battles Sexism & Self-Doubt for a Career in Medicine in this Factional novel by Janis Robinson Daly

The Unlocked Path tells the story of a “New Woman” of the early 20th century: educated, career-minded, independent Eliza Edwards. In 1897 Philadelphia, after witnessing her aunt’s suicide, Eliza rejects her mother’s wishes for a society debut, and at a time when only five percent of doctors are female, she enters the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. With the support of a circle of women and driven by a determination to conquer curriculum demands, battle sexism, and overcome doubts, Eliza charts her new life’s course. Combining science and sympathy, she triumphs to heal others and herself.

As a young intern, she summons a forthright confidence asserting her abilities to those mistrustful of a woman doctor. Through her work with poverty-stricken patients, she defines her version of suffrage work to champion women’s rights for and beyond the right to vote. When global events devolve into chaos with the 1918 influenza pandemic and a world war, Eliza renews her vow to help and heal.

  • Her inspiration for the novel: How a genealogy search on her great-great-grandfather, William S. Peirce, Esquire, led her to discover that he took an active part in founding the Woman’s Medical College in Philadelphia.
  • Her passion for documenting women in history whose stories need to be told
  • The extensive research she did for the novel and interesting facts she discovered

“Daly develops Eliza’s family ties and shows her passion for social change through her career choices and her opinions …. A work that effectively showcases the power of love, friendship, and faith – both in one’s calling and in oneself – to create change in the world.” – Kirkus Reviews Janis Robinson Daly’s debut novel,

Janis Robinson Daly grew up outside of Boston, graduating with a B.A. in Psychology from Wheaton College — at the time, an all-women’s college. At Wheaton, Janis developed a fond appreciation of the supportive relationships established between students, faculty, and alumni and a heightened awareness of female-centric issues. Both directed her writing of The Unlocked Path.

With a plot and themes sketched, Janis enrolled in a creative writing course sponsored by Wesleyan University to hone her skills. Combining years of extensive research and feedback from writers’ conferences and a series of beta and sensitivity readers, including the Executive Director of the American Medical Women’s Association for accuracy, she polished the manuscript and readied it for publication with independent press, Black Rose Writing.

Splitting her time between Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Florida and hotels along Route 95, a tablet became her Kindle library and desk, packed into a travel bag for reading and writing wherever she might land. Janis’ husband, along with their rescue pup, has willingly, and luckily, also embraced this nomadic lifestyle. More adventures beckon her to document other women in history whose stories need to be discovered. She is currently working on a sequel to The Unlocked Path, following two main characters into and through the Depression and World War II. From the polio epidemic and research into the vaccine, to the Coconut Grove nightclub fire and more, readers will again be treated to a story centered on events of the past, rich in historical detail.  For more information on Janis, please visit:
