AK22-39. Leon Conrad’s Art of a Story

Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Leon Conrad, on air from September 20th

We’ve been telling stories for thousands of years now. What can we learn about story and how it works that we don’t already know? In his book Story and Structure, Leon sheds new light on story, sounding new depths, diving deeper into the sea of story than anyone has ever gone before – and he’s here to tell the story of what he’s discovered in those unexplored depths. Most importantly, what he uncovers is a pearl of great price from the depths of that sea of story that can help us shape the way we live our life more flowingly and more harmoniously.

Leon was born in London, UK to a Polish father and Coptic Egyptian mother. He spent his formative years between the ages of 6 and 18 in Egypt in a multi-lingual environment among souks, bazaars, catacombs, markets, and a living tradition of oral storytelling straight out of the Arabian Nights.

A traditionally published author and storyteller, Leon has published extensively in journals and magazines, written theatre shows, and contributed to radio programmes. He’s an avid reader and a keen researcher who loves to find satisfactory answers to questions we don’t yet have satisfactory answers to.

As a story structure consultant, Leon works with both fiction and non-fiction writers to help people’s thoughts shine more brightly, so they communicate more clearly and their voice resonates with presence.

AK22-38. The Silent Count by E. A. Smiroldo

Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Elizabeth A. Smiroldo, on air from September 13th

Nuclear engineer E. A. Smiroldo talks about her cli-fi (climate-change fiction) thriller The Silent Count

E. A. Smiroldo, novelist, musician and nuclear engineer. Her novel The Silent Count is a cli-fi (climate-change fiction) thriller about a young nuclear engineer who comes up with a daring plan to combat climate change, but faces unintended consequences as she fights for her family, her career, and for humanity. E.A. talks about her background in science as a nuclear engineer specializing in weapons nonproliferation, and the inspiration for this climate-change thriller.

E.A. Smiroldo, a native of Washington DC, has witnessed how politics corrupts and skews human perspectives on what’s right and wrong. E.A. says humanity is dangerously close to the brink of a real climate crisis.

  • How a nuclear weapon could indeed change weather patterns
  • How the premise of her book, The Silent Count, was inspired by a real textbook and valid science
  • Weapons nonproliferation
  • Climate change and is it too late?
  • People think energy and fuel is expensive now, just wait…
  • If countries like France can make climate headway, then the US can, too
  • Her book is satire but in the same spirit as movies like Don’t Look Up, is a cautionary tale
  • Greenwashing – corporations and people do this to feel good but it doesn’t really help
  • Capturing carbon from coal, and other ideas we should consider
  • We need to make sure leaders are doing things for the betterment of the people, not for poll numbers
  • Music and how it influenced her writing
  • One of the main characters is a musician — E. A. infused a lot of her experiences from the gigs she played as a musician
  • The local DC music scene — the hardcore punk scene in Washington DC were on the forefront of the straightedge movement, like her main characters
  • The soundtrack for The Silent Count, available on YouTube

ABOUT THE BOOK:

She’s determined to stop climate change before it’s too late…

Nuclear engineer Dara Bouldin’s life is a mess. She’s paying off her dad’s gambling debts, reeling from a broken engagement, and practically invisible at the energy research agency where she works. Meanwhile, her ex Jericho’s latest single is racing up the charts and her handsome new colleague Dmitri is friendly with everyone but her. All around them, wildfires, floods, and other natural disasters have become the norm. But Dara has an audacious plan to reverse climate change, if only someone would listen.

Little does she know, someone at the CIA has been paying attention. And when the public demands action, Dara gets the chance to turn her dream into reality, with the blessings of Congress and the President. Things are looking up. That is until she discovers a secret that thrusts her into the center of a global conflict that could rewrite history, in dire ways she never intended. Things are going to change, big time. And the countdown has already begun. Be careful what you wish for, Dara.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

E. A. Smiroldo is a novelist, musician, and a nuclear engineer. She is the author of the debut novel The Silent Count, which blends her scientific expertise as a nuclear engineer specializing in weapons nonproliferation, with real-world inspired drama. A Washington DC native, she’s also a Washington Area Music Association Award-nominated singer-songwriter and has won prizes in writing competitions sponsored by the Bethesda Literary Festival and the International Screenwriters’ Dig. After placing in the latter, she optioned the treatment for a screenplay with X-ray Media.

Whatever the lesson may be, they learn from the experience of other characters, as the action toggles between multiple time periods, mainly the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and present day.

“Written like a movie, these books offer entertaining, unique twists in a warm and fuzzy Hallmark-type way,” says the author. “There is a constant action in these quick, easy reads that zero in on human connection and how people bond with one another.”

AK22-37. Charles Christian the Urban Fantasist

An Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Charles Christian, on air from September 6th

If you are fascinated by the weird, the unexplained and the bizarre, join author Charles Christian on a fascinating road trip around what he calls the Wold Newton Triangle, where rather odd events have occurred, unmatched anywhere else in Britain. He will talk about werewolves, zombies, vampires, green skinned fairy folk, headless ghosts, screaming skulls, ancient warlords, a Parkin-eating dragon, and so so much more!

?Descended from a motley crew of smugglers and witches (*), Christian was born a chime-child with a caul and grew up in a haunted medieval house by the harbourside in the Yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough. According to folklore a caul-shrouded chime-child can’t drown at sea but can see and talk to faerie folk and also has protection against spells cast by malevolent sorcerers. And yes, he was once commissioned to go on a werewolf hunt on the night of a full moon by a newspaper. Spoiler alert: he didn’t find one. (Or it didn’t find him.)

He is the author of the best-selling ebook Writing Genre Fiction – Creating Imaginary Worlds: The 12 Rules while his latest book is Shuckland: Weird tales, ghosts, folklore and legends from East Anglia’s Waveney valley. He also scripts and presents the Weird Tales Show videos on YouTube and for four-and-a-half years ran the Weird Tales Radio Show. And, yes a UK national newspaper once really did commission him to go on a werewolf hunt on the night of a full Moon. Spoiler alert: he didn’t find one. (Or it didn’t find him!)

Charles Christian is an English barrister and Reuters correspondent turned writer, podcaster, award-winning tech journalist, and sometime werewolf hunter. He now writes, talks and makes videos mainly about folklore, urban myths, history, and the weird. And yes, an English Fleet Street newspaper once did commission him to go on a werewolf hunt on the night of a full Moon. Spoiler alert: he didn’t find one. Or the werewolf didn’t find him! He was born a ‘chime child’ with a caul so, according to legend, cannot drown at sea but can see and talk to ghosts and fairy folk without fear of coming to harm – allegedly!

Skeptic or Believer? Does Charles Christian personally believe in ghosts, the weird and the paranormal? His answer is the same as the celebrated ghost and supernatural horror writer M. R. James gave in the preface to a collection of his short stories about 100 years ago: “I am prepared to consider the evidence and accept it if it satisfies me.”

He is the author of “A travel guide to Yorkshire’s Weird Wolds: The Mysterious Wold Newton Triangle” and “Saints & Sinners in Dark Age England”. His latest book is “Shuckland: Weird tales, ghosts, folklore and legends from East Anglia’s Waveney valley” – volume one of a new haunted landscapes series – and he is currently writing an almanac of real witches and sorcerers, along with other practitioners of magic – black and white, from earliest times through until the modern era.
