LM22-27. James Campion and “Take a Sad Songs” Inspiration.

fir the LOVE of Music with Sara Troy and her guest James Campion, on air from

In The Emotional Currency of “Hey Jude,” James Campion dives deeply into the song’s origins, recording, visual presentation, impact, and eventual influence, while also discovering what makes “Hey Jude” a classic musical expression of personal comfort and societal unity conceived by a master songwriter, Paul McCartney. Within its melodic brilliance and lyrical touchstones of empathy and nostalgia resides McCartney’s personal and professional relationship with his childhood friend and songwriting partner, John Lennon, and their simultaneous pursuit of the women who would complete them. There are also clues to the growing turmoil within the Beatles and their splintering generation scarred by war, assassination, and virulent protest.

Campion’s journey into the song includes the insights of experts in the fields of musicology, sociology, , and history. Campion also reveals commentary from noted Beatles authors, biographers, music historians, and journalists and, finally, a peek into the craft of songwriting from a host of talented composers across several generations.

Take a Sad Song is a tribute to how a song can define, inspire, and affect us in ways we do not always fully comprehend, as well as a celebration of a truly amazing track in the Beatles canon that reveals one band’s genius and underscores its lasting voice in our cultural and musical landscape.

LM22-22.The Drummer Loves Ballads, John Armato.

for the LOVE of Music with Sara Troy and her guest John Armato, on air May 31st.

The Drummer Loves Ballads is the debut album of John Armato. Featuring extraordinary music, musicians and moods, it was produced and engineered by some of the industry’s top talent. The album was designed to be a new soundtrack for lazy Sunday afternoons, romantic evenings, and melancholy midnights, but you’ll swear it’s a long-lost jazz favorite.

Featuring more than 25 musicians, including the legends Houston Person and Warren Vaché, The Drummer Loves Ballads is a story more than 40 years in the making. From intimate quartet settings to sweeping orchestral arrangements, it is as rewarding to listen to closely as it is relaxing to listen to casually.

From Christmas toy drums to first lessons, from his first professional gig to a tour of Russia, drums have been John Armato’s constant companion. He has played clubs and concerts from New York City to Napa Valley and was a member of the trio behind Lisa Henry, a winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute Vocal Jazz Competition.

While the beat and burst of high-energy drums captured his attention early on, it was the swish and sizzle of ballads that captured his heart. It was always about the beauty, not just the bang. (As a kid, after seeing Buddy Rich repeatedly on the “Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” Armato asked his parents for an album by the drum legend for his birthday, but “one with a whole band playing, not just a bunch of drum solos.”)

Forty years ago, Armato played one of his first jam sessions. That’s where the story of The Drummer Loves Ballads — and the album itself — begins.

A Kansas City native, New York City ex-pat, and now a Sacramento resident, Armato appears on the CDs “Claudette,” by Sacramento vocalist Claudette Stone and “Comfort” by Texas praise singer Lisa Bloecher. The Drummer Loves Ballads is his first release as leader.

LM22-21 Jason Shand ‘The Petty Narcissist’

for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy and her guest Jason Shand, on air from May 24th

I think every artist obviously has their own method for coming up with a good tune. Everyone has their own inspirations. So on that note – no pun intended- I guess if I were to give advice to some young up and comers trying to craft a good song, I’d say to go with your gut… to go with what you’re feeling… to go with what inspires you, because in my opinion, if you do that, it’s coming from an authentic place, and for art to be good, it’s got to be authentic.

Personally, I draw from my life experiences or the life experiences of people I know, or people I may not know first hand, but may observe. I’m inspired by that slice of life, that human connection. Now for me, these slices of life most often go hand in hand with a melody, a bass line, perhaps a lyrical hook, that may evoke an emotion tied to an observation… and the next thing you know, this observation… this inspiration… has given me the tree trunk/main hook of a song, and what follows are the branches/verses that flesh themselves out. Sometimes it’s the other way around with the branches first becoming well defined, followed by the tree trunk… the main anchor of a song suddenly staring you in the face!

There is no real formula… except that I’m drawing from a situation… a storyline… I’m drawing from something that inspires me. It’s very rare for me to come up with anything good when I try writing for the sake of writing with no emotional impetus/connection to spark me.

I truly believe that when you go with your gut… when you go with your feel… when you go with your instinct, when you are inspired from that authentic place, tap into that and the universe will eventually give you something back. That goes for life as an artist/songwriter and I think that also goes for life in general as well.

Not all things that are good are inspiring when it comes to a great song. Extreme sadness/depression, anger, confusion, jealousy, hatred… these emotions have given me great material. Don’t run away from these negative feelings. Confront them, dissect them, and turning them into some poetic expression will probably be cathartic.

‘The Petty Narcissist’, the title track of my new album, without going into personal detail, is an example of a song about a relationship of mine and it was written from a place of enormous pain. It was an extremely cathartic experience for me to write and finish that song and I was able to let all that pain go afterwards. It was healing. And I got one of my best songs out of it!

So to wrap this all up and to bring things back full circle in regards to being an artist/songwriter – go with your gut… go with what you’re feeling… go with what inspires you, because in my opinion, if you do that, it’s coming from an authentic place, and for art to be good, it’s got to be authentic.

ABOUT THE NEW CD:

??The Petty Narcissist, is Jason Shand’s second full length album after 2015’s Because of Zeeva.

“My goal with this 14 song collection was to make a substantive personal pop album that not only catered to this new single driven era, but also catered to the old school of having a full length album where each song flows into the other taking the listener on a sonic journey. There are no fillers on this album. With all fourteen songs – from the 6:36 ‘Seeing You’ opener to the 2:49 ‘Oh Fábio’ closer – being substantive pop singles that flow from one song to the other, taking the listener on a sonic story telling ride, I’d like to think I succeeded.”

Five years in the making, The Petty Narcissist dropped worldwide on January 21, 2022.

LM22-19 Jon Landers Big Apple Indie Music

“for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy and her guest Jon Landers, on air from May 10th

Music kept me from checking out from life back in 1999 after going through a divorce from a 29-year marriage. In the three years following my divorce, my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer, my dad tried to commit suicide as a result of my mom’s health and my brother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. If I hadn’t walked into Circuit City and seen a keyboard and hit the demo key that played the theme to the James Bond movies, I would not be here today to talk about it. I simply purchased the keyboard, labeled the keys, and used the built-in loops to create my own music and lyrics.

I started as a stock transfer agent for what was then called The First National Bank of Boston back in 1969. I then went to work for my dad in his import-export business which led me to become the National Sales Manager for a British company and went on to help a German horticultural company to get established in the North American market. I then became a manufacturer’s rep for the lawn & garden and hardware industry being one of the first agencies to sell and service The Home Depots and big box home centers covering a territory from Maine to Virginia. I burned out in 1999 when I went through my divorce and switched to becoming a self-taught graphic designer purchasing a graphic design company, in 2001 that led me to move into the music industry in 2012 and started The Big Apple Indie Music Series aka TBAIMS to support independent music artists by providing a venue(s) for them to perform live in front of music, entertainment, TV and film industry executives including A&Rs. I studied networking prior to starting TBAIMS where I was attending an average of 4 networking events a week in the NY, CT, NJ markets.  I also researched social media and found myself on most of the social media websites early on. I am in the top 11% of LinkedIn users and if you Google my name, I’m usually on page one with my profiles showing.
