Mental Health Awareness, with Sara Troy and her guests Gina Cavalier on air from July 16th
Gina Cavalier or Dr. Amelia Kelley, coauthors of the new book, Surviving Suicidal Ideation:From Therapy to Spirituality and the Lived Experience. Gina is a healed suicidal ideation survivor and host of The Liberated Healer podcast and Amelia Kelley, PhD is a trauma-informed therapist and co-host of The Sensitivity Doctor’s Podcast.
In this interview, Gina Cavalier will talk about: Finding purpose, daily practices, and how to find support are crucial aspects of mental health and wellness. Myths surrounding suicide, self-injury, trauma, addiction, and depression often hinder effective understanding and support. Addressing issues like traumatized children, soldier suicide, and poverty can provide a more comprehensive view of these challenges. Understanding the phases of suicidal ideation and recognizing the 5 signs that a domestic partner or significant other may be suffering from suicidal ideation are critical in offering timely help. It’s also essential to know how and at what age to have healthy discussions with children about suicidal ideation, including how to recognize it in teenagers and young adults. Steps for healing, including alternative modalities, can offer varied paths to recovery. Exploring spirituality and mindfulness, along with practicing forgiveness of yourself and others, are powerful tools in the healing process. Finally, understanding the science and power of hope can provide a solid foundation for recovery and resilience.

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Dr Sean Botha, on air from April 16th
My PhD research into sound and “silence” meant analyzing music using deep listening practices and in the process, I created a new analysis model for musicians. Whilst doing this I created “The Listen Program” because I noticed how in-depth my own listening process became. Without realizing I was creating deep focus for my own neurodiverse brain. I had to do something with the work and wanted to make a difference. This is why I started to share the program with colleagues, family and students. The benefits of the program are great and different for everyone. The program uses every day sounds around us and it adapts itself to the needs of the individual. The individual gets to choose what they will listen to in a given moment. It means perception and psychoacoustics plays a big role in how the individual will feel at by the 7th step of the listening process. We are surrounded by sound, noise and quiet moments every day of our lives and we need to know how to navigate our life with the sounds around us. This is where the program becomes extremely helpful for people from all walks of life, not just those who are neurodiverse.
Sean Botha hails from Pretoria, South Africa. He is the founder & director of HSBothaProductions, in Sydney, Australia. Sean is a music composer, storyteller and researcher. He created “The Listen Program” during his doctoral research at Western Sydney University. The program was created out of a need to quiet his own mind. He received wonderful feedback from coaches & tutors of its applicability and how it creates focus and a calm mind. Sean is passionate about the relationship between sound & stillness, physics and communication. Sean worked in the health industry for 28 years during which he went back to his first love, music. His research has given him a deeper understanding of the fundamental processes of communication, specifically, listening and the need to help people realign with their own unique listening and process.

Raising Our Gifted Children with Sara Troy and Professor Selena Bartlett, on air from April 9th
The driving force behind my work is the urgent crisis of children’s mental health crisis and safety online in 2024, a concern that disrupts my sleep and ignites a deep sense of emergency within me. The realisation that in 2024, our children are not safe anywhere on-line has propelled me into action. Disturbing scientific reports showing a significant increase in mental illness driven by excess consumption of online sexual content, alongside the negative impact of social media, highlight the critical need for immediate intervention.
Parents, often the first and only line of defence, are grappling with the challenge of safeguarding their children. My work is inspired by the urgent need to empower clinicians and educators and parents/carers with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to protect their children from the myriad threats they face online. It’s driven by a commitment to transform the digital space into a safer, healthier environment for our young people, where their mental and emotional well-being is protected. This mission, rooted in a deep concern for the well-being of our children and the desire to make a tangible difference, motivates me to continue developing and advocating for solutions that can address this pressing issue.
In today’s digital age, the rise in cyber victimisation and sexual exploitation poses a significant mental health crisis for our youth. The Internet Watch Foundation’s 2023 findings reveal an alarming increase in online child sexual abuse content, much of it self-generated under coercion. Coupled with nearly unrestricted access to digital content, this environment fosters mental health challenges, notably self-harm, suicide ideation, anxiety, ADHD, and eating disorders, which are often linked to childhood trauma and the relentless pressures of social media and excess screen time. BEING SEEN ultimately, is the BIG IDEA, and the special and unique aspect of my work lies in its blend of scientific insight, innovative solutions, and unwavering commitment to positively impacting the digital well-being of children and families. Through “BEING Seen” advocacy, books, and podcasts, I am integrating neuroscience with a deep understanding of the digital landscape’s effects on youth mental health to protect children’s mental health. My work offers comprehensive solutions that mitigate risks and foster resilience and positive mental health among young people.
I am Professor Selena Bartlett, a mother to 5 grown children and an international expert in Translational Neuroscience. I am a Group Leader of Neuroscience at the Queensland University of Technology. I have three decades of brain research and host of the Thriving Minds and BEING SEEN podcasts, author of over 110 research papers and books as well as numerous film and media appearances. I fervently advocate for brain health, penning three public-oriented books, including “BEING SEEN: Master Parenting in the Digital Age. I bring neuroscience to life—providing people and parents with the tools they need to help their children thrive. The Australasian Neuroscience Society recognised my contributions to neuroscience with the Lawrie Austin Award. I democratise access to the latest neuroscientific advances, applying my deep expertise in neuroscience and neuroplasticity to bring brain health to all.
