BB21-37 Ellen M. Snee, EdD, Claiming our Authority

Building Your Business with Sara Troy and her guest Ellen M. See, on air from September 14th

Ellen M. Snee, EdD, a former Catholic nun and author of LEAD: How Women in Charge Claim Their Authority. From the C-suite to the Senate floor, women in leadership positions are at historic highs. And research now shows that women are more effective than men in 84% of competencies associated with leadership. Yet many accomplished and capable women continue to struggle with issues related to ambition, power, and authority. What explains this disconnect? Dr. Snee, who has been at the forefront of women’s leadership development for more than 25 years, is available to share her unique perspective on women leaders in roles of authority.

Informative, uplifting, and empowering, LEAD is a leadership book for our times. It has received advance praise from business leaders, academics, and experts on women’s leadership including Sally Helgesen, best-selling author of How Women Rise, The Female Vision, The Female Advantage.

Snee’s earlier experience as a Catholic nun affords her a unique perspective on women leaders in roles of authority. She lived and worked with women who ran large educational and non-profit institutions. There she learned how:

  • women can collaborate with other women while navigating the male hierarchies
  • to mobilize individuals, teams, and organizations toward a shared mission
  • to assert her authority when necessary without harming relationships with others
  • to gain critical—and transferable—skills that apply to all women who want to exercise power and authority as a leader

Possible Topics that Dr. Snee speaks to include:

Claim Your Desires, Communicate With Purpose, and Lead With Authority
In this inspiring, actionable talk, she lays out her proven coaching model for leading from the inside out. Rooted in psychology and real-world experience, she shares illuminating stories and practical tips that audience members can immediately put to use.

Performance vs. Promotability: The Key to Career Advancement

Women often see merit as the best way to get ahead: Keep your head down, get the work done, cultivate good relationships with your team or staff. But there is a difference between performance and promotability and it’s key to advancing in your career.

Holding Power and Embracing Discomfort

Leading with authority means embracing power, not just “influence.” Power means you are in control, including the ability to hire, fire, manage assets, and impact lives. This includes the unique challenges — and opportunities — inherent when women have authority including over other women.

Networking With Authority

The power of a network is not “who you know,” but “who knows you.” It’s vital to build webs of connection with individuals and organizations outside and beyond your own company. These relationships become increasingly important over the course of a career.

21-37 A Different Kind of Courage

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from September 14th

The courage I had when I was young was in some way mindless, we believed as a young person does, that we can do anything and nothing will hurt us, we learn through life’s lessons that is not always so. I was such a timed person until I went to South Africa at the age of 14 y. Old. I was desperately shy, but loved one on one conversation (still do). When we arrived in S.A, I was frown into the deep end and had to get social very fast, that is when I discovered my courage.

I had in many ways had to fake it before I convinced myself, but in doing so, I discovered a person I never knew was there. I became and still am an extrovert introvert, an Alfa Beta personality. To others I was this exuberant young woman who tried everything, I did not know if I could do it until I tried to do it, which means I could not do it a lot of the time, but I would not know what I could do unless I tried.

I went into jobs like that, always unqualified, but in belief, I could do it, how would I know unless I tried. I realized my strengths and weakness and learned to focus on my strengths. We sell ourselves short, thinking we can’t when we from the inside out, know we can. It is different from when we were young, we were daring, challenging, excited, and sometimes unthinking. Now as we age we understand that our courage has a different purpose and that we can still be daring but in a more soul heartful way.

I have leaped at many things in life, now I am slower to leap, but that does not mean I am not still adventurous, it just means more discerning. Realistically, my body can not do what it used to, and my spirit may be a bit dulled. I have still within me, much to explore and do, but now it is within my energy and infusiasim.

C21-36 Isabel Chiara, author of EAT YOUR WORDS

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Isabel Chiara, on air from September 7th

Isabel has supported hundreds of clients to actualize their life’s greatest potential, to reconsider obstacles as opportunities and how to meet challenging moments with heart. She has dedicated decades to personal growth and development but kept her own lifelong struggle with food well hidden from her work. Nearing her 60th birthday, she knew she had to break her own silence about her struggles.
From this place, she wrote EAT YOUR WORDS and created Giana Giovanni; loosely based on aspects of her own story, but presented in a relatable way so that, true to Isabel’s nature, her own healing journey could be offered to others.

How to begin to approach feeling the physical body in a world that seems to promote disassociation with the body. How women can powerfully reframe what “getting there” actually means and why we can come together to transform what success looks like physically. How each person is equipped with a unique sense of “gut instinct” that is as varied as the trillions of bacteria in our digestive system. How to hone in on your “gut instinct.”

Isabel Chiara, created Giana Giovanni, a character whose story is told in the style of a first-person historic memoir. Giana’s recount takes us from the farm fields of Italy circa World War II to the era of Grease Lightening in the late 1970’s, up to the current day. In humorous, easy-to-read language, Eat Your Words gives us a peak at the generational path of overeaters beginning from a home-grown food heritage to the fast-food, drive-thru window of the super-sized large fry and extra-thick chocolate shake.
With the wisdom of the feminine, Isabel supports Giana’s inner-exploration and aha moments, not pushing her to find a solution to her dysfunctional relationship with food, but encouraging her, through self-love, to live her way back into her body that feels, at last, like home. In this tale, our protagonist’s main “squeeze” and heroic rescuer isn’t the hot boy next door but rather the overly-handled bag of chips she grapples with until finally exchanging it for the act of self-embrace.

LM21-36 Swapna Abraham BREAKING MUSIC RECORDS

for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy and her guest Swapna Abraham, on air from August 31st

My Why

To share my story of realizing my calling after having reached what I imagined was a dead end. There are people out there who are probably at that dead end and cannot see the light of day. If mine could help them see and navigate, I’d have achieved far more than I did through my 1000-day challenge that set four world records in singing-songwriting and everything until then.

Swapna Abraham is a singer-songwriter from Kerala, India, who recorded hundreds of songs in a career spanning twenty-five years until she embarked on a world record challenge in 2017, composing, producing and publishing 2321 songs, setting four world records based in Dubai. This challenge was self-imposed just after her decision to give up music for good. Primarily a gospel artiste, her style of music stretches across the entire gamut from pop and country to folk and soul. She has to her credit twenty-one albums (nineteen gospel and two secular) in English.

21-36 Discovering Montreal.

Sara’s View Of Life with Sara Troy, on air from September 7th

I have lived in Canada for 41 years now and have never gone to Montreal, so now is the time. I am going with my wonderful 88 year old friend who is saying good bye to her city of birth. To see it through her eyes will be wonderful, and to get away and just be in the moment and no sows is much needed.

Do we allow ourselves to discover? do we venture out and see even what is in our own neighborhoods? Even though international travel is not ok, see your own country, and learn just how wonderful it really is.
