Our programs are provided in the spirit of hospitality. We make efforts to cultivate a warm and welcoming presence when you walk in the door, from friends you know, volunteers who want to get to know you, and staff who are always there for you.

It is virtually impossible to begin to improve your life when you don’t have a safe and secure place to call home. First United provides support along the housing continuum, from our low barrier shelter to family units to specially equipped housing for people with disabilities.

First United has been engaged in legal advocacy work since the 1970’s, providing much needed legal assistance, advice and representation to low-income and vulnerable people in the Downtown Eastside. Today, we support clients with upwards of 2,800 unique cases every year, helping people resolve a range of issues, including tenancy, social assistance, old age security, immigration and more. We are committed to empowering people to assert their legal rights and make their voices heard.

First United can be described as a “one-stop shop”. We provide a wide range of programs and services that help meet basic needs – like tax returns, hot showers and mail service. All offered in a welcoming, joyful place where everyone can feel at home.

Meals and Hospitality

Good things happen when we gather around the table to break bread with our neighbours. Every week, we serve thousands of meals to any and all people who come seeking sustenance and acceptance. Weekday breakfast, lunch and tea-time are open to the whole community, and residents of our shelter enjoy 3 hearty meals a day, 7 days a week. We also offer special community meals on Fridays, most weekend lunches and holidays.

Community groups and local businesses are invited to sponsor and serve meals for the community. Some of our meal providers have been partnering with us for years: this is a powerful way to connect with and celebrate the vibrant Downtown Eastside community.

Sponsor a Meal Here.

ECO 17-05 Global Warming Awareness & Solutions with Craig Hover

ECO Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Craig Hover, on air from January 31st

craig-hover

Can we keep turning a blind eye to global warming? The facts are abundant and if we want a future here we must do our part, however, small, tune in and here what you can do to save this planet that sustains us so well.

Craig was a SKEPTIC

A 2oC temperature rise is going to be “catastrophic?”

  • Problem seems counterintuitive
  • Temperatures can vary 40 to 60oF (22 to 33oC) in any given day
  • What’s another couple of degrees?
  • At first blush it seems not credible that such a small variation can have such a large effect
  • Some people may want to “bury head in sand” (the problem, if true, is so scary don’t want to look at).
  • Some don’t want to “sacrifice” their lifestyle to “save the planet,” particularly if it’s perceived that that “sacrifice” is part of someone else’s “agenda” (e.g., battery-electric cars). (With my proposed solution sacrificing lifestyle isn’t necessary.)

CLIMATE

“Climate Change”

  • The term is a milquetoast, politically-correct, overworked cliché
  • The climate is changing all the time
  • This cliché equivocates about what’s really happening
  • The term global warming is much more accurate
  • There are 14 climate drivers; effects are from days to 100s of millions of years
  • There’s only one that can produce the kinds of changes in the time frame we’re seeing
  • The greenhouse effect; need the greenhouse effect; too much CO2 in the air; trapping more heat on the surface than can escape back into space; every 3 weeks the thermal energy accumulation on the surface is equivalent to annual global energy production
  • Blew through the safe upper limit of 350 ppm in 1988; now at 408 ppm and rising fast.

POLITICAL

Concern about global warming perceived/perpetrated as a “liberal vs. conservative” construct

  • Global warming is NOT a political issue – though it has been politicized.
  • Frank Luntz in 2003; created the illusion there is no scientific consensus
  • 97 to 99% of scientific community agree; it’s scientific fact – like gravity; the “uncertainty” comes from scientist types always wanting to give themselves some “wiggle room,” just in case there is some unknown data “out there.”
  • The unthinking, knee-jerk reaction is that if you are concerned about global warming you’re automatically assumed to be a Democrat; if you’re a Republican, it’s automatically assumed that you’re not concerned.
  • Kept politics out of the book on purpose – would immediately alienate 50% of the potential audience regardless of what my personal political viewpoints are; it’s just physics.
  • Reality: Climate Resolve; 3 out of 8 attendees Republican; recent poll – 90% Dem & 74% Reply favor climate-related measures (that’s over 80% of population)
  • Problem is state- and federal-level party posturing (the warring teams)
  • Despite grandiose noises by politicians, big business, and the COP21 Accord – ALL proposed measures to date are much too little way too late.
  • Entrenched power structure doesn’t want to fix global warming (i.e., abandon fossil fuels) – results in loss of control over people (this is the real issue)

IMMEDIATE

Media persistently alludes to solving global warming “someday,” like we have generations to solve this problem [they use words like gradually, ultimately, and eventually]

  • Global warming is real, imminent, and severe – far more so than is being portrayed in the mainstream media.
  • Don’t have generations to fix this.
  • Need to achieve 80 to 90% CO2 emission reductions globally in next 5 years – 10 years tops.
  • Must mount an all-out WWII-style war on global warming in the next few years if we are to have any hope of surviving as a global civilization.
  • We are fast approaching a Point of No Return – which will be induced by an ice-free Arctic; ice-free Arctic will be created by the 2oC temperature rise
  • Passing this Point of No Return will unleash an irreversible, methane-driven, runaway global warming phenomenon; it’s not the 2oC that will wreck the planet, it’s what gets unleashed that will wreck the planet.
  • By the next century, much of the planet will experience summertime peak temperatures of 125 to 157oF (52 to 70oC)
  • Our children and grandchildren all dead; 90% of the population will perish; end of civilization as we know it.

FIXING IT

Well-regarded business leaders assert we need an “energy miracle” to “tackle” global warming

  • This is flat-out false and is extremely damaging; it is almost criminal to make such statements
  • The truth is that we have ALL the technology needed to end global warming right now. All we need to do is implement it.
  • In my Perpetual Abundance Engine model, ALL our power for our entire global civilization can be provided by the three natural forces of sunlight (solar), air moving across the planet’s surface (wind), and gravity (hydro). These forces are inexhaustible, unlimited in supply, and are free for use by anyone.
  • We can create as much electricity, water, and fuel (motive and heating) as we wish for any purpose we wish
  • We can live an abundant, free-flowing life without damaging the planet
  • No scrimping, shrinking, or living small will be needed
  • Our energy sources (solar, wind, hydro) and water sources (desalination) are already “handled”
  • Energy storage and conveyances are the challenges
  • Forget batteries for energy storage ($47 trillion per day) and battery-electric cars (unsolvable limitations in range, recharge rate, and scale, among others)
  • Energy storage – CAES
  • Replacing the ICEV – FCEVs
  • WWII-scale level of effort
  • Large-scale deployment; unprecedented 6 to 12% annual economic growth rate for an entire generation

WHAT TO DO?

One of the standard mantras is to “Reduce our carbon footprint”

  • While well-meaning, this intimates shrinking and trying to live in a smaller and smaller box.
  • I know 3 people (out of 100s) who have almost “eliminated” their “carbon footprint” (so they say). What about the energy needed for creating their houses, clothes, furniture, cars, electronic devices, food, etc, etc, etc?
  • Reality: most people won’t do that. Don’t try to make fixing global warming dependent on these – it won’t work, by a long shot.
  • Reality: we can’t “shrink” small enough to fix the global warming problem
  • We need to rethink what we’re doing from the ground, up.
  • Individual actions (Chapter 40) are useful – help to retrain our outlook and thinking
  • Non-typical individual actions; Ex., unplug from your devices, think, read a book – one printed on paper, buy quality over quantity, open a credit union account, buy locally, feel good, pay attention, laugh, etc, etc.
  • Collective actions; 10%; critical mass; entrenched power structure has an Achilles’ Heel
  • Activist groups
  • Our emotional state is critical; from powerlessness to empowerment
  • Raise thinking – most important part; Einstein
  • At least 83 different topics in the book to get us to think; break out of our non-thinking media-induced trance
  • Action at local level (examples); women’s suffrage movement
  • “Vibrate” at a high level; think in terms of a positive outcome

BOOK

book-cover-a-world-to-come-home-to

What makes this book different from others?

  • I’ve had more than one reader tell me this was the one book on global warming they’d always been looking for, but thought they would never find.
  • Half the book is about the global warming problem and the technology that can fix it. The other half of the book is about the human element – how we think (or don’t think, as the case may be), feel, and relate to others. This is the most important part and is what makes this book different from other books on global warming.
  • People don’t think they can understand the global warming problem – it’s too scientific and complicated; not true
  • Scientific community keeps throwing more facts and data at people author-craig-hovertrying to “get through” to them
  • It’s not about the facts; we’re drowning in facts
  • Scientists are lousy salespeople – that’s because they don’t understand that most people don’t make decisions based solely on facts; they make decisions based on their emotions, and then select facts to justify those decisions
  • My book is written for the general public in terms that are easy to understand
  • I reduce the entire global warming problem down to basic fundamentals – Ex., a pot of ice on the stove
  • I paint the picture of what “catastrophic” really looks like (the disaster movie)
  • I then show how we can actually fix it – if we get busy
  • Most important – how we think
  • Global warming is actually our greatest opportunity; if we can learn to cooperate to fix this thing – open a whole new era for mankind.

“for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy and her guest  James Kob, on air from January 31st

Documentaries come in all shapes and sizes. Some are pretty serious films. Others… not so much. But all documentaries explore conditions, events or people and present them in a “film short” that teaches us something useful or important.

Point in case related to the “people” subject matter:  none of us suddenly “arrives” in our lives at a place or at a point in time to which we were magically transported. Instead, that “arrival” is an accumulation of much of everything we learned, experienced personally or vicariously, were given, created ourselves or were deprived of in some way. Somehow through Kismet, Divine Intervention, just plain sheer determination or a combination of all three… we all arrive “somewhere”.

Film Director & Storyteller Mark Jacobs of ZZYZX Films has created a masterful documentary: “The Making Of …. The James K?b Experience” that explores James K?b’s musical journey in a way that may bring hope to all musical artists and those that appreciate the art of “making music”.

The full film was for released in (2016), but take a look below to see a brief preview of what’s  in the full-length documentary.

Hopefully, this “trailer” will have you looking forward to the full release. Who knows… maybe it will even inspire you to follow your life’s passion.

James K?b has brought melody and beautiful arrangements back to the popular music genre….. while still keeping it “cool & hip”.

A veteran American composer, lyricist, arranger and producer… Mr. K?b has created music that spans across multi-national borders as well as focusing on the music scene here in America.

In developing “The James K?b Experience”, he has set a new benchmark in music entertainment…… a sort of ‘Broadway-ish, Pop, Jazz, Bossa Nova and a little cinematic music’ affair! In addition, quite a few pieces are performed in French and Portuguese for our European and South American music lovers.

It’s a good kind of different.

C17-04b Lessons from a Difficult Person

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Sarah Elliston, on air from January 24th

15288467_1270161693048525_4062936249098939945_o

The funny thing is that Sarah Elliston never realized she was “a difficult person,” — someone who harangued people until she got her way, threw snip fits and temper tantrums, talked over her bosses and pointed out what she thought were their misconceptions. In her family, where she felt bullied, the only way she knew how to get someone’s attention and approval was to voice her opinion and loudly! Without standing her ground, how could she do what she thought was best for herself and everyone else around her? She wasn’t intentionally mean-spirited. She was just trying to do what she thought
was RIGHT!

Until a kind, but firm, boss woke her up! With great compassion and strength, her boss pointed out that her actions had consequences. That in being “difficult,” she was not only disrupting the office camaraderie and production but impeding her own professional advancement.

17-04 Petless and a Sad Heart

Join Sara Troy on Sara’s View of Life, on air from January 24th

Losing a pet is like losing a part of you.

kokomo

I have just lost my cat or 17.7 years and 5 months ago lost my dog of 14.7 years, I am now petless it feels so strange and my heart misses their loyal love.

Kokomo my border collie was my best friend, she was my soul, my heart, and my spirit. She knew me inside and out, and was always there for me, letting her go was kind to her, but has been almost crippling for me. I had to let her go last August 9th because she could not cope with life anymore, it was so hard to do, but she did prepare me for it.  We gave her a beautiful death, a steak dinner, ice cream, a vet assisted death at home and so much love around her, she went knowing how much she was loved.

Sativa our cat was an independent cat of only 6lbs, but she loved the outdoors, she loved people and was so beautiful and we thought she would live for many more years. It came as a shock that I found her on the floor listless, unable to stand, lethargic, this vibrant cat who only days before had presented me with a bird, was dying right before my eyes.

I took her to the vet and he said she had kidney failure and most likely would not recover from it, the kindest thing to do was let her go, but always so had to commit to. It was all so fast.

She lay in my arms with my son and his girlfriend giving her loving support and we said our goodbyes. This limp lifeless kitty who used to terrorize other cats and Kokomo, hang out with the guys was a mere shell of herself, how did she decline so fast?

The vet gave us time to say our goodbyes and then came in with the injection, in seconds it was over, we kept speaking to her telling her we loved her forever so her spirit would go with all the love we have for her, she went home knowing that.

Now after 17.7 years of having a pet, it feels so strange and empty, I do have my Grand pups who are here often, and I love them so, I am sitting one right now who knew my loss and gave me comfort, but alas they are not my babies and have not traveled through life with me.

I miss my Kokomo, now that silky little girl who loved sleeping on your lap is now gone too, yes they will always be with me, in my heart soul and with a visiting spirit, but I won’t get to hold them anymore and for that, I am very sad.

So go give you pet the biggest hug you can and make sure they always know how much you love and that you are grateful for them.

Thank you Kokomo and Sativa for all the love smiles and laughter you gave us all, we will never never forget.

2022. It has been years since they passed and my heart still aches for them, that trust, pure love and soul connection is missed so much.
