“The virtual currency, rocked by serial scandals and failures since its invention in 2008, has taken on new life as financial officials roll out regulations to govern the cyber cash and banks invest in its future.

By requiring bitcoin exchanges to register and granting them legal status, the government is signaling to users and backers what may prove an unrealistic promise of transparency and security. These are the same financial officials, after all, who have struggled historically to oversee savings and loans — shifting to virtual currencies is like jumping from Beatrix Potter to James Joyce in one semester. At the least, regulators need to affix flashing red warning lights to every Bitcoin undertaking: consumers beware.

In 2013, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, a branch of the Treasury Department, ruled that virtual currencies must register with the US government and adopt steps to combat money laundering. Soon, the New York State Department of Financial Services will issue a broad Bitcoin regulatory framework. Meanwhile, the department has granted a trust company charter to itBit, a first.

ItBit, an exchange located in New York and Singapore, played its hand well. The company earlier this year raised $25 million from venture groups and also added some high-profile financial types to its board, including former FDIC Chair Sheila Bair and former Senator Bill Bradley. Both the financing and pumped-up board are doubtless comforting to the deep-pocket investors itBit targets.”

Liz_Peek_largeLiz Peek spent over 20 years on Wall Street, most of them as a top-ranked research analyst. After managing her firm’s entrance into international research and foray into the market for U.S. equities in Japan, she became Wertheim & Company’s, first female partner.

Liz Peek was one of the first women on Wall Street to earn that most hallowed of titles –Partner. After graduating with an Honors Degree in Economics and as a Durant Scholar from Wellesley College, she joined a research boutique on Wall Street where she developed an improbable expertise in backhoes, mining equipment, oilfield wireline services and drilling fluids. She became a CFA and in 1975 she moved to Wertheim & Company, a leading equities house which subsequently was bought by Schroder, Inc. and then by Citigroup. During almost two decades with the firm, Liz became a top-ranked analyst covering oilfield services companies, co-head of investment research and head of the firm’s international research department. As a partner she was seconded to Schroder to assist that company’s entry into the equities business at the time of London’s “Big Bang”, and then assigned to build Wertheim’s equities business in Tokyo.

Liz was the first woman to head the National Association of Petroleum Investment Analysts, a national organisation of several hundred energy investors, and was a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Oil and Gas Journal, Wall Street Transcript and other industry periodicals. TGIP-Shorter_DonaldWe are becoming a more embracing world of each others differences. We still have a long way to go in understanding and showing compassion for each other, but with work like Daphne is doing, we are a step further. 

Daphne is currently working on Transparency: The Gender Identity Project.

Daphne Chan’s work explores identity and how it reveals itself through gender, culture, sexuality and body image. With “The Flawless Sabrina” (2006) the fluidity of gender and sexuality were explored by documenting a drag queen named Jack Doroshow. The project delved into communal taboos of populations that rankle social precepts such as the gender identity of genderqueer: a person who identifies as a gender other than “man” or “woman”. The commonality is that all genderqueer people reject the notion that there are only two genders in the world as they believe binary gender is a social construct. 

DaphneChan_headshotNext, “Her Interior” (2007) examines the conceptual conflation between women’s bodies and domestic interiors, how the identification between self and interior is linked with women. Each woman interacts with features of her environment in order to explore how she occupies that particular physical and psychological space. The fragmentation of the bodies emphasizes the compartmentalization that is inherent in women’s identities. “Transparency: The Gender Identity Project” is a visual depiction of the LGBT and genderqueer community of New York that is unique and much needed. There is still a lack of visibility of specific identities and uncovering these identities will challenge the common stereotypes for what certain identities are expected to look like. It’s a powerful statement in visibility and diversity. The goal is to celebrate and encourage the expansion and public awareness of queer fluid expression. The transgender community has historically faced systemic discrimination and this project provides a platform for visibility, recognition and eventual acceptance. With each project, Chan attempts to reveal one more aspect of our identity and to distinguish the physical corporeal grounding in our bodies and the amorphous, socio-cultural precepts layered upon us.

Yann Borgstedt is a Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist. Born and raised in Geneva, he pursued his studies in the USA. He has created, invested in and managed a wide range of companies in the real estate development, relocation and storage domains in France, England and Switzerland

In 2005, he created the Womanity Foundation, which focuses on the education, training and empowerment of women in Afghanistan, Brazil, India, the Middle East and North Africa region and elsewhere.

Amongst other innovative initiatives, Womanity created the first commercial women’s radio exclusively in the Middle East, called “Radio NISAA FM”, and played a key role in the transformation of the largest school for girls in Afghanistan into a model school (Al Fatah). Womanity’s WomenChangeMakers Fellowship was launched in 2009 to identify and support social entrepreneurs with innovative solutions for the empowerment of women. The program was inspired by the Ashoka model, which Yann has become familiar with in recent years, particularly through his participation in Ashoka’s Support Network in Switzerland and France, where he worked with François Marty development sustainable social housing.

Yann also sits on the board of the “Gender Equality Project”, a Swiss Foundation working towards equal professional opportunities for men and women.

We do this by providing information, practical advice, courses, training and individual sessions.

Founded in London in 2009 by Lidia Frederico and a team of supporters, the Lidia Frederico Project is currently working towards opening a center for support, teaching and healing in London to assist those in need.

 We aim to give everybody access to a range of professionals and services including conventional and alternative health practices such as acupuncture, dental care, hypnotherapy, yoga or NLP, to business, financial and relationship advice, stress reduction, feng shui and energetic personal, home and business clearing.

Lidia Frederico is a lifelong Consciousness Facilitator, spiritual coach, energy therapist, trance medium and author. She is widely sought out by clients and media worldwide. Originally from Portugal, she now hails from London. Lidia inherited her medium and spiritual abilities from a lineage of female healers and mediums on her mother’s side. Lidia continues to clean and balance each client’s energy field without interfering with that person until they can stand on their own two feet and, therefore, ensuring that the unwanted influences do not return. She is an Energy and Crystal Therapist, works with the chakras, auras and uses herbs for clearing and cleansing.
