C15/43b Out of the Transylvania Night

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Aura Imbarus, originally aired October 27th

A Story of Tyranny, Freedom, Love and Identity by Aura Imbarus

OUT OF THE TRANSYLVANIA NIGHT explores tyranny and freedom, love, success, and the price paid for misaligned dreams in an epic tale of identity and the human spirit. It is a deftly woven narrative about finding greater meaning and fulfilment in a free world, and an exploration of how social issues affect the human spirit. An incredibly powerful memoir.

shapeimage_1I’d grown up in the land of TRANSYLVANIA, homeland to Dracula, Vlad the Impaler, and, worse, the Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu—who turned Romania into a land of gray-clad zombies who never dared to show their individuality, and where neighbours became informants, and the Securitate made people disappear. Daylight empowered the regime to encircle us like starved wolves, and so night had always been the time to steal a bit of freedom. As if bred into our Transylvanian blood, we were like vampires who came to life after sundown. I buried the family heirloom jewels, tucked the flag into my sweater and left my outpost to join the action . . . tonight Ceausescu would die!

Known for using stand-ins to pose for him, Aura doubts if it was even Ceausescu himself who was killed that night. Nevertheless, when her countrymen topple one of the most draconian regimes in the Soviet bloc, Aura Imbarus tells herself that life post-revolution will be different. But little in the country changes. With two pieces of luggage and a powerful dream, Aura and her new husband flee to America. Through sacrifice and hard work, the couple acquires a home, cars, and travel—but trying to be Americans is much more complicated than they expect. More difficulties set in the stock market crash takes their savings, house, and cars; thieves steal three centuries’ worth of heirloom jewels, and Aura’s beloved mother dies.

Aura’s marriage crumbles under the stress. Devastated, she asks herself, ‘How much of one’s life is owed to others?’ Tested even further by the vagaries of fate, Aura discovers a startling truth about striking a balance between one’s dreams and the sacrifices and compromises that allow for Serenity, selfhood, and lasting love. More resolution comes when in 2010, Ceausescu’s body is exhumed to answer questions of a cover-up, and Aura can finally lay to rest the haunting mysteries of her past.

C 15/42b “Indestructible You”: Building a Self that Can’t be Broken

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Tim Ward aired October 20th-26th

We are all on a journey of Self Discovery but who guides on our road and how “Indestructible” can we make ourselves along the way?

images (8)The collaborative work of Shai Tubali and Tim Ward, “Indestructible You: Building a Self that Can’t be Broken” is a practical guidebook for making yourself so strong inside that life’s relentless ups and downs cannot shake you and cannot break you. “Indestructible You” will help you uncover the powerful, driving force of your true self, and let go of everything that holds you back. “Indestructible You” is based exercises and practices developed by Shai Tubali through his research and work guiding several hundred individuals through psycho-transformational processes.

In essence: Life is like an eternal seesaw. At every given moment you’re either up – getting what you want and feeling powerful, or down – finding yourself rejected, weakened and frustrated. We are forever hoping to bend the laws of this ‘unfair game’ so that we stay on the up-side of life. But this unrealistic insistence is why we suffer. “Indestructible You” reveals the way to step down from the eternal seesaw and build an unbreakable self, a self that remains fearless and strong no matter what life throws at you. Impressively ‘user friendly’ from beginning to end, “Indestructible You: Building a Self that Can’t be Broken” is insightful, informative, practical, and inspiring. Very highly recommended for personal and community library Self-Help/Self-Improvement collections.

C15/41 The New Pilgrims and a Renewal in Faith

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Dr. Joseph Castleberry aired October 13th-19th

images (3)Immigrants, the world is made up of them and now we are seeing a new renewal in faith because of  them.

In The New Pilgrims, Dr. Castleberry provides an understanding of how immigrants are contributing to the renewal of American faith, as well as the positive contributions they are making to our churches, families, schools, politics, along with the economy.

Dr. Castleberry presents to the reader not only from a Christian perspective but from a practical point of view the significant impact immigrants are having on the church in America. Dr. Castleberry says, “The New Pilgrims is a bold, fresh look at how immigrants are renewing America’s faith.”

The New Pilgrims clearly shows us the impacts that immigrants have had from the very beginning of America, immigrants have had a powerful role in keeping America’s faith strong.  They have continually renewed America’s economy, its churches, family values, education, and politics.

Leaders like Varun Laohaprasit and Jesús de Paz renew churches by establishing new congregations that reach out to their fellow immigrants and help them establish productive lives as assimilated Americans.  Immigrants like Ilona Trofimovic and Isaac Canales renew family values by serving as a check and balance to rugged individualism, modeling family unity, community cohesion, and selfless sacrifice.

Motivators like Jesse Miranda bring hope, ambition, and innovation to America’s schools, and visionaries like Samuel Rodríguez help political parties move past polarizing debates and into new policies that serve the emerging national interest.  Today’s immigrants have not yet determined their future political loyalties, and they will gravitate to the party that serves the national interest best by providing the most opportunity for them and their families

The New Pilgrims helps readers to understand why people who like religion should love immigrants. Contrary to some recent, politically biased attempts to make the Bible speak against “illegal immigrants,” careful study reveals the Bible’s powerful pro-immigrant teaching that has traditionally shaped America’s reception of newcomers.

American Christians who want to see the renewal of their faith should strongly support immigrants, as a massive wave of immigrants has arrived with new confidence in America’s historic faith and mission. Primarily composed of Christians, such immigrants are “The New Pilgrims,” and they have already begun to restore our national faith.

The New Pilgrims show political as well as religious leaders that despite significant recent declines in church attendance by White Americans, immigrants have increased the overall numbers of Christians in America.  Among Catholics, 70 percent of new adherents in the last 50 years have come from Latino immigrant families alone.

As for Evangelical Protestants, perhaps 100% of all net growth has come from immigration.  Evangelical immigrant churches, in particular, have experienced a powerful religious revival in recent years, a phenomenon included in a movement Time Magazine has referred to as “The Latino Reformation.”

But Latinos are not alone. The revival includes immigrants from all over the world.  The new Christian immigrants bear comparison to the Mayflower Pilgrims because of the way they see their journey to America as well as their interpretation of America’s national purpose.

Like the Puritan John Winthrop, they see America as a shining city on a hill, a beacon for godliness, freedom, democracy, and perhaps above all, opportunity. Among them, leaders like Samuel Rodriguez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference predict a Third Great Awakening in America that will lead not only to religious renewal but also to the renewal of American society as a whole.

He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Education degree in International Educational Development from Columbia University. C15/40b Cooking changes Everything

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Darya Rose originally aired October 6th/15

Cooking changes everything says Darya Rose who is the creator of Summer Tomato.

The quality of time you spend in the kitchen is just the start of how learning to cook without recipes will change your life.

Health is central to the Foodist Kitchen philosophy

Although I have come to enjoy cooking for its own sake, and for the sense of warmth and connection it brings to my home, eating more Real Food and avoiding processed foods is still my top motivation for cooking.

It’s simply impossible to make the best food decisions on a regular basis unless you can cook and prepare Real Food. Foodist Kitchen will support you on this mission and help you build meals based on the Foodist Plate.

Darya is the author of Foodist and creator of Summer Tomato, one of TIME’s 50 Best Websites. She received her Ph.D in neuroscience from UCSF and her bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley.

Darya helps people get healthy and lose weight without dieting. Because life should be awesome.

She spends most of her time thinking and writing about food, health and science. She eats amazing things daily and hasn’t even considered going on a diet since 2007.

I’m also a neuroscience Ph.D and the author of Foodist. I recently moved from San Francisco to New York City with my husband Kevin Rose and our insanely adorable mini labradoodle, Toaster.

ROSE_Foodist_PBI spend most of my time thinking and writing about food, health and science. I eat amazing things daily and haven’t even considered “going on a diet” since 2007. I hover about 5-8 pounds below my original goal weight without much effort and am in better shape than I was at 20, which is totally awesome.

In 2010, I completed my Ph.D in neuroscience at UC San Francisco––my diploma is signed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. A little over a year before graduating I started writing about food, health and weight loss here at Summer Tomato, and by the time I graduated I had a new career.

My writing has been featured in several well-known publications and is frequently mentioned by many more. I received my bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley and was recognized as one of the top students in my graduating class of 2003. I also play Zelda.

As you can see, I’m a total geek.

For 10 years I studied basic science in labs at UC Berkeley and UCSF. I have worked extensively with both human subjects and experimental animals, using a wide range of techniques to explore the basic biological functions of the brain.
