TSM26-43. Robin Rosenbluth Living with Strangers

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Robin Rosenbluth. On air from October 27th

At nineteen, after more than five years in the NY foster care system, I spent nine months teaching in a remote village in Northern Kenya as a student at Friends World College, an international college. As the only white, Jewish foreigner living with the Samburu and Rendille tribes, I found, over time, more connection with people there than I had with my foster parents. It is important to understand that we share a common humanity with people from vastly different cultures and nationalities.

While my childhood was difficult, I learned that allowing myself to be vulnerable (something I learned in Kenya) makes lasting relationships possible: to love and be loved. I wrote Living with Strangers: Healing a Wounded Heart in a Distant Land to encourage older foster youth that a happy adulthood is possible after care. I also want readers to understand from my experience living in Kenya how people from other cultures can be teachers, and that people from other nations, races, and religions share a common humanity.

TSM26-37. Giselle Roeder, Flight Into the Unknown PT1

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Giselle Roeder. On air from September 15th

Giselle Roeder is the author of several books, including ‘We Don’t Talk About That,‘ a memoir about her idyllic childhood and the horrific experiences during the Russian invasion, rape and murder family’s survival after WWII. She describes three decades of her “life in three Germanys”: First as a child under Nazi rule, then as a teenager growing up in Communist East Germany, and, following her daring escape, life in the West where she had to start all over again.
In “Flight Into The Unknown,” the sequel to the first book, she tells us the story of her marriage to an (unknown) penfriend from Canada, her immigration, her life as a wife and mother to two stepdaughters and later on a son. Her trials and tribulations, the ups and downs of an immigrant with only a rudimentary knowledge of the English language, and her success in overcoming all obstacles are nothing short of inspiring. Despite all odds and never giving up, Giselle became a successful businesswoman and international speaker. Her husband started an affair, which led to their divorce. She lost everything she had built up in twenty years of marriage. Another beginning and for the reader, another book, the final of her memoirs: “Set Sail for Life After 50”
These three books form a ‘trilogy,’ “The Nine Lives of Gila:”
1. We Don’t Talk About That, surviving WWII and its aftermath.
2. Flight Into the Unknown – Dreaming of Life and Love in Canada. An immigrant’s story. (two shows)
3. Set Sail for Life After 50 – Another new beginning after a divorce, lots of travel and ending with retirement. Coming soon.

Giselle Roeder is the author of four books: two about healthy living, followed by “Forget Me Not,” A Bouquet of Stories, Thoughts, and Memories about people who influenced her life, and last but not least, the memoir that went around the world:

“We Don’t Talk About That” – covering the riveting story of surviving WW II during her first thirty years.

Giselle is now working on the sequel, writing about her life in Canada.

Following her emigration to Canada in 1963, Giselle succeeded in business, was interviewed on radio stations across the country, hosted her own Television Show for 9 years, and became well-known as an international public speaker in the developing field of alternative health.

Today, she will tell us about her life under different political systems:

Ten years as a child under Nazi rule –

Ten years as a teenager growing up in Communist East Germany –

Her life as a young adult in Capitalist West Germany after she escaped from East Germany.

TSM26-31. David Kaye & Ella Coonen, Hearing Life Before Silence Falls

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guests David Kaye and Elle. On air from August 4th

“Did you know wind makes sound?”

After being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and a rare genetic variation, Ella Coonen learned that she would eventually lose her hearing completely. In early 2025, she received her first hearing aids and, for the first time, heard the world as others do. Knowing time was limited, Ella created a bucket list of sounds she wished to experience for the first—and perhaps last—time. This film follows her moving journey to fill her heart with the beauty of sound while she still has the chance.

TSM26-24. Valentina Pinzon Ancestral Art

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Valentina Pinzon, on air from June 16th

Our mission is to honour and support ancestral wisdom through Indigenous-made and sustainably grown cultural offerings from Colombia, Peru, and Mexico. We share ceremonial tools, statement jewellery, organic edibles, and sacred creations that invite people into deeper self-awareness, connection, and appreciation of ancestral cultures.

Our offerings include ceremonial-grade cacao, cacao tea, palo santo, rattles, medicine bags, beaded jewellery, clothing, accessories, and other handcrafted items created with intention and respect for tradition. Each piece carries a story, reflecting the people, culture, and sacred processes behind its creation.

What began as a journey of sharing Indigenous art has evolved into a deeper focus on ceremonial edibles, particularly cacao. Through learning the needs and interests of our local community, we have expanded into designing and creating products that resonate more closely with those seeking meaningful and conscious living practices.

By offering authentic Indigenous products and educating people about the traditions, craftsmanship, and cultural significance behind them, we aim to foster awareness, respect, and curiosity for ancestral wisdom and Indigenous communities across South America and beyond.

Through our ceremonial cacao, we are also beginning to facilitate workshops and talks on the conscious consumption of cacao, helping others reconnect with the ancestral spirit of Mama Cacao and cultivate a more mindful and heart-centred relationship with themselves and the world around them.

TSM25-41. Deadpan by Richard Walter

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Richard Walter, on air from Ocotber 14th

Screenwriter and bestselling author Richard Walter for his new book, Deadpan which  is a funny novel about an unfunny subject: hate speech and bigotry. Providing gobs of entertainment, the satirical narrative delivers a body blow to prejudice. Deadpan follows the misadventures of a vaguely anti-Semitic West Virginia Buick dealer who wakes up one day to find himself transformed into the world’s most popular Jewish comedian. Steeped in magical realism, the narrative confronts the incandescent issue of our day: Identity, intolerance, and the value of free speech.

Deadpan‘s unfettered comical sensibility is a vivid testament to Mark Twain’s dictum “against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.” Set during the world-wide oil crises of the 1970s, the narrative alternates between locations in West Virginia, Las Vegas, Washington, Tehran, and Sinai, featuring characters as diverse as Sarah Palin, Mel Brooks, and the Shah of Iran. Walter’s phantasmagorical tour-de-force is not only a satirical takedown of antisemitism (and bigotry in general) but also a dazzling celebration of
human dignity, resilience, and humor.
