23-37. Balancing all the Balls

Sara Troy on Sara’s View of Life, on air from September 12th

“It’s a funny thing about life. We send our wishes, hopes, and dreams out into the vastness, almost like throwing a message in a bottle into the ocean, hoping that the universe will answer. We meticulously chart out our paths, believing we’ve accounted for every twist and turn. We anticipate a rhythm, expecting milestones to unveil themselves one at a time. But here’s the catch: the universe has its own rhythm, its own mysterious cadence that doesn’t always align with our carefully laid plans.

And now, here I am. I waited, I hoped, and sometimes even doubted. But just when I least expected it, the universe delivered. It didn’t hand me one answer; it showered me with all of them, all at once. It’s like waiting for a bus on a cold winter’s day for what feels like hours, and then three show up simultaneously. It’s overwhelming, thrilling, and a tad bit intimidating.

So, the challenge I face isn’t about the waiting anymore. It’s about juggling these blessings, these opportunities that have suddenly been thrust upon me. I find myself in the thick of it all, doing a delicate balancing act, ensuring that not a single ball drops. It’s a reminder that life’s gifts don’t always come in expected packages or on our timeline. Sometimes, it’s a flood when we were bracing for a drizzle. But amidst the chaos, there’s a lesson, a hidden blessing, teaching us agility, resilience, and the power of embracing the unexpected.”

“Oh, the whirlwind of life! Just as I’m finalizing my memories and moments for my memoir, a labor of love that has traveled with me through time, I’m also nurturing the seeds of ‘Our Forgotten Children.’ book series, which is so close to my heart, it not only demands creative energy but also the challenge of fundraising to produce the anthology. Our children’s need need to be protected and we must change in the way we raise and invest in our children. Yet, there’s more. With two TV platforms beckoning, the spotlight and the screens are waiting, each requiring its own set of preparations, energy, and vision. And amidst all this beautiful chaos, I’m packing my bags for a month-long escape to see family ( and finish editing books). The universe sure has a quirky sense of timing! But here’s the deal: I’m ready. One page, one child’s story, one screen, and one day at a time.”

AK23-36. Susy Smith and “Ascendant” novel.

An Authors Kiss with Sara Troy and her guest Susy Smith, on air from September 5th.

What would you do if society crumbled? How would you survive if you had to fend for yourself? Would you be able to live off the land? Susy Smith explores these questions and much more in her gripping “Asylum” book series. Finding inspiration from The Walking Dead, Susy can talk about how she created this dystopian world, as well as universal themes of human nature, including the fight for survival and freedom.

Packed with adventure and suspense, blending elements of science fiction, fantasy, and dystopia, Ascendant transports readers to a disintegrated world where civilization has collapsed and chaos is the new normal. In an interview, Susy talks about:

  • How she explored the ideas of survival, freedom and the ugliest side of human nature
  • How she had to “lean into” the dark side
  • How she found inspiration from the television series, The Walking Dead
  • How her dystopian world also compares to those of The Hunger Games and Divergent
  • Being from a small town in Oklahoma and how that has influenced her writing
  • Her position as a curriculum specialist for the Kanza Tribe, also known as The Kaw Nation, a federally-recognized, self-governing American-Indian tribe, headquartered in Kaw City, OK

Susy Smith is a celebrated dystopian storyteller, author, and curriculum specialist for the Kanza Tribe in Oklahoma. Armed with a deep understanding of language, the resilience of the human spirit, and a bachelor’s degree in English, she weaves captivating, award-winning stories that leave readers wanting more.

Smith’s literary journey commenced with Asylum, a gripping novel that clinched the 2020 Writer Con contest in the novel category. She continues to engage audiences with Ascendant, the second installment in the “Asylum” series, further probing the intricacies of survival, freedom, and the dark side of human nature. In addition to her novels, Smith occasionally writes poetry. Her authentic writing style echoes her experience of living in a small Oklahoma town with her husband, four grown children, and two furry dog-children.

YH 23-35. Mikki and Ehler’s-Danlos Syndrome.

Your Health is Your Choice with Sara Troy and her guest Mikki Gaffen Stone, on air from August 29th

I would like to shed some light on the topic of often invisible chronic pain conditions such as hypermobile type Ehler’s-Danlos Syndrome. It is said to be a rare condition, but I call bullspit on that. It is rarely diagnosed and that is another thing altogether.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a hereditary condition that affects the skin and the mobility of joints due to abnormal collagen synthesis, an important component of connective tissue; the latter is abundant in the skin, joints and vessels, to which it gives strength and elasticity. Although it develops in childhood, the diagnosis is only reached in later years. The condition takes many different forms that vary in severity, so the clinical manifestations vary widely. Ehlers- Danlos syndrome diagnosis is based on physical examination, through observation of how the patient moves, and the doctor’s analysis of his/her medical history. Usually, a rheumatologist or a physiotherapist establishes the diagnosis rather than a general medical practitioner.

Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome brings with it many, many challenges. One of those challenges is that people with this condition often ‘look well’. This can lead to some unpleasant public scenes where someone tries to shame a person with EDS for using mobility aids for example. The judgment and lack of support can, and all too often does, extend all the way to medical gaslighting.

Born in England, I am a lifelong learner and nomad. Having lived in eight countries to date, I consider myself to be a Global citizen – where I come from is a story, not a place. Home is wherever I am, right now. And we are moving soon ? I work with people. Meeting them where they are and guiding them to exactly where they want to be. We make big changes and small ones. Whatever is needed. I do so while working with my own chronic condition of Eheler’s – Danlos Syndrome, hypermobile type. I believe my own experience with pain enables me to understand others on a level that you only ‘get’ if you experience it yourself.

MH23-35. Deborah L. Staunton and (DMDD)

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Deborah L. Staunton, on air from August 29th

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) is a condition in which children or adolescents experience ongoing irritability, anger, and frequent, intense temper outbursts. The symptoms of DMDD go beyond a “bad mood.” DMDD symptoms are severe.

I am the daughter of a mentally ill alcoholic father and the mother of a mentally ill daughter. At that time it was a brand new diagnosis, very little was known about it and there were no resources for parents. Now that she is 18, her diagnoses have changed and while they are still challenging, I have insight and clarity that I didn’t have then.  Sharing my experience and what I learned from it can help parents who are on that difficult journey with their own kids. It can save them some heartache and provide validation and support. Mental illness still has a lot of stigma associated with it and removing that stigma is an important step in supporting those who suffer from it and those who love them.

Deborah L. Staunton was raised by a mentally ill father and is raising a mentally ill daughter. She came to motherhood late after enduring four miscarriages and despite having an extensive background in Early Childhood Education, has had an extremely difficult journey in raising two neurodivergent children. Writing has been Deborah’s lifeline and her passion since childhood and has kept her grounded when her life was unravelling.
