C22-16 Ruth Yunker is an expert at aging vivaciously.

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Ruth Yunker, on air from April 19th

I am an author who has written three books. Two on traveling solo to Paris. And the third, Baby I’m the Boss of Me, tells how I find myself at 72 feeling, better than ever, at the top of my game, in fact! I’ve traveled widely, lived in many places, raised two children, and am finding out that getting older is not the end of the world. In fact, it is the beginning of an amazing journey, this unique part of our lives, and by staying curious and open, by nurturing your sense of humor, it becomes an amazing journey. Certainly, it has for me.

We discuss aging, traveling solo, health, and exercise, humor, personal bravery, beauty and fashion at every age, parenting, and the most important factor to aging vivaciously.

She’s been writing for thirty-five years, and has published everything from literary short stories, magazine articles, newspaper columns, and book reviews, to an NPR show called “Every day is Astrological”, and a cartoon strip “Zoe’s Voice”, about single parenting…

Ruth Yunker has written two books, in equal parts travel memoir and humor. Me, Myself and Paris and Paris, I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Ways are both about surviving Paris as a single woman whose French is spoken with a Belgian accent (teenage years lived in Brussels), and who feels compelled to smile at strangers, even knowing such behavior is way outside the bounds of Parisian politesse.

In her latest book Baby, I’m the Boss of Me she takes on the joy and humor of aging, defining it clearly and precisely as the most powerful time of one’s life, should one choose to make it so.

Ruth Yunker had a peripatetic childhood and has continued the pattern as an adult. She is well-traveled and acutely attuned to both the gifts and foibles of her fellow man. As a result, she can say hello with the inflection and accent of a native anywhere she finds herself, and sometimes can even tell a joke successfully in French.

She currently lives in Los Angeles, California. She has two grown children, two divorced husbands, is in between pets, and is about to give up the big SUV for a smaller, more battered car to survive the appalling traffic issues in the gently aging Los Angeles.

Ruth Yunker is vivacious and intelligent, opinionated and funny, an easy-going, charming, and witty storyteller, who brings humor, her personal history, and the power of her convictions to every book she writes, and every audience to whom she speaks.

22-15 Dream your dream into reality

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from April 12th

The end of a day must be as calming as the start of a day, for in your dreams you are laying foundations for what is to come, and when you awake in your knowingness you are guided to what can make those dreams come true. Dream well and welcome a new day with enlightenment.

Where do our dreams come from?

Where do the seeds of our possibilities grow?

Where do our dreams need to go?

Where do we find the courage to build that dream?

Where do we find the knowledge to succeed?

Can we trust the dream?

That desire that lays within you is that a dream? that energy called excitement that is unleashed on an idea that became a dream is the dream.

We need dreams for they are the foundation of all that is, all that can be. So how do we honour that dream, that idea? how do we fuel it into a picture that can be seen and ignited?

Paint the picture, vivid and alive so that you are clear on what it is, start seeding and watering the idea into action. Nurture it protect it, allow it to grow in its own light, and then guide it gently along its path to life.

Never give up on your dream, but remember visions change so do the directions of dreams. As long as the core of that dream is still alive, the redirection is just the universe showing you what you need to fulfill that core and make the vision happen.

Be willing to take a totally new path, for it may be the path to that dreams meaning. Remember to be aware of those around you and that who interact with you, for you never know who may have that nugget of info you need to grow.

Remember to be patient for dreams do not manifest overnight, and only grow at the rate they are meant to, nurtured with your loving care and conviction.

In the end, your dream may look totally different in reality, but as long as you have been true to the meaning of the dream, the core of the heart, and soul spirit of you, the principle, the authenticity, is what you were always meant to have…this I know all too well.

So dream well, dream big, but be prepared to take action in all directions to fuel this dream into fruition, nothing happens by just dreaming it, you have to actionism on those dreams to build them.

I had a dream, I thought it was to be taken in one direction but was redirected to another. When I first started the journey, I had no idea that this was my dream all along. I got out of my way and kept walking forward in belief and purpose, now I am where I should be and know what wonders lay before me, I love who I am, doing what I am doing, because I fed the core, and was flexible but steadfast and willing to bend but stay strong.

You too can live your meaningful purposeful dream just trust and take the first step.

MH22-15. JD Mass. Race for What?

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest JD Mass, on air from April 12th

RACE FOR WHAT? A White Man’s Journey & Guide to Healing Racism from Within. In 2017, JD Mass earned his doctorate in Organizational Psychology and became heavily involved in white antiracism groups in Los Angeles, and later in St. Louis.

Race is currently a hot topic of discussion. Questions being considered are: Does racism still exist? What does equity look like?  How do we achieve justice?

Anti-black racism is real.  It hasn’t been corrected and it won’t go away on its own. Aboriginal (Black) and Indigenous folks have carried the burden for far too long.  It is time for white folks to take the next step and complete the mission.

St Louis, MO – JD Mass, PsyD, releases his book, Race for What? A White Man’s Journey & Guide to Healing Racism from Within. Mass tells the story of growing up in a black community and witnessing racism firsthand, as well as his successes and missteps in building powerful alliances with the community in which he was raised. Race for What? released March 29, 2022.
Part memoir, part how-to, and entirely real, this masterfully woven book takes readers back in time to St. Louis in the 80s and 90s, when Mass was growing up with a circle of creative friends and influences. The talent he bonded with, such as the rapper Nelly, would set the stage for a life of music, religion, culture, community development, and politics.

Mass says, “I have been on a lifelong journey to learn why racism was created and what we can look forward to without it. Change is happening. Will it be the superficial change that doesn’t bring forth justice or the transformational healing that is needed? Race for What? provides a vision for the latter.”
Race for What? provides stories with a unique perspective from a white man’s experience and illustrates seven steps to healing. Mass encourages white people to work through the emotional and psychological obstacles in order to repair and heal the harm racism has caused.

  • The privilege he had growing up around black folks
  • His white privilege and experiences
  • Seven steps for addressing the racial divide
  • Reparations and why we need them
  • Why the “it’s not as bad as it used to be” argument is flawed
  • Being Nelly’s business manager
  • Why and how Nelly brought JD in to help with everything from nightclub ventures to clothing brands

In 2017, JD Mass earned his doctorate in Organizational Psychology and became heavily involved in white antiracism groups in Los Angeles, and later in St. Louis. This work inspired him to write Race for What? A wise thinker and guide, JD hopes for our society to finally correct the harm of racism and help create a humane world.

C22-15. Andrew Biernat & The Growing Pains of Growth

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Andrew Biernat, on air from April 12th

The process of personal growth isn’t always pleasant. After years of counseling, reading mountains of personal development books, and going through numerous challenges, including quitting alcohol and experiencing 3 miscarriages in between our two girls, much of the growth I’ve experienced has come at a cost. Some of the growth processes are fun and motivational. Much of it cuts you to the core in order for you to heal back stronger.
