About “Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom” by Acharya Shunya…

Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom

Demystifying the Ancient Health Balancing System for All of the Rest of Us!

If you are like most of us, what you know of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian spiritual and healing wisdom, is that some people swear by its restorative impact, it has something to do with botanicals and there are a growing number of practitioners and products that adhere to it today. Otherwise, it’s pretty much a mystery.

But if you happen to pick up a copy of Acharya Shunya’s new book

Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom: A Complete Prescription to Optimize Your Health, Prevent Disease, and Live with Vitality and Joy (Sounds True, Feb. 2017), the veil of mystery will be lifted and you will absolutely understand how this is something you can do for yourself to not only obtain optimal health, but to heal many of the illness and conditions that have plagued you.

Acharya Shunya (Acharya is a title bestowed on a master of this art and science, Shunya is her name), is a woman who stands between two worlds. Her lineage of Ayurveda sacred teachers and masters goes back centuries, and yet she feels it is her sacred duty and honor to put this knowledge into the hands of everyone today, especially people who have sought answers in modern medicine, but need to find another way.

Learning Ayurveda on the knee of her beloved grandfather, who was revered throughout India, Acharya Shunya has become one of the leading American practitioners and advocates. She is the founder of Vedika Global, a spiritual foundation dedicated to elevating consciousness, building community, and serving humanity by illuminating India’s Vedic spiritual traditions of Ayurveda, yoga, and Vedanta. She was named among the 100 Ayurveda and Yoga Trailblazers by Spirituality and Health magazine and is president of the California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine.

What Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom provides is a “do-able” approve to this time-tested methodology and an understanding of how the natural forces are constantly at play with the inner forces that impact our level of energy, digestive ease or dis-ease, mental alertness, weight gain and specific health conditions. She makes it simple to see how what you do and eat  or drink at specific times each day will profoundly affect your level of wellness. And what you can do to transform your health and mental outlook by following her simple guidelines.

Furthermore, this narrative-based guidebook meticulously covers the how-to’s of morning and evening self-care, daily contemplations, self-massage and skin care, cooking (including recipes), beauty rituals, and more.

Acharya Shunya can address for your listeners:

  • How the diurnal, lunar and solar rhythms impact your wellness.
  • How there are three subtle matter states that regulate and sustain all of our bodily functions and psychology – and when one of these is out of balance, the body begins to dis-regulate, causing illness, sluggishness or mental/emotional fatigue—and what you can do to adjust this!
  • How waking early before sunrise can jumpstart your whole mental, physical and emotional health.
  • How drinking cold water and other iced beverages may be damaging your constitution.
  • How the Ayurvedic method for teeth cleaning using a twig actually works as well or better than modern dental care practices and products
  • How massaging with oils daily before bath or shower has profound health implications.
  • And more…

Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom combines beautiful and charming reminiscences of enlightened learning at the knees of a beloved master, client case histories, an easy-to grasp understand of Ayurveda’s basic teachings and practical advice.

LM 17-08 “Swampy Soul Music” from Jessie Smith

“for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy and her guest Jessie Smith, on air from February 21st

16174599_1214135751969212_3468957967379728669_nAward-winning singer Jessie Smith didn’t choose soul music; soul music chose her. As a little girl, she had an epiphany during a church performance. Family lore has it, during the show, she bolted up and turned to her mother and said, “The music makes me wanna stand up, and get down.”

As fate would have it, Jessie would journey on a successful, but very divergent, path as an artist, earning acclaim and many coveted opportunities in a variety of genres and musical contexts. Along the way, she would also soak up industry know-how. Now, childhood inspiration, prodigious music gifts, business savvy, and self-assuredness converge with Jessie’s Singles Project. In this setting, she will be issuing a steady flow of her unvarnished swampy soul.

“I had something of an epiphany during a meeting with a producer,” the Nashville, Tennessee-based artist reveals. At the time, Jessie was a crossroads with her career. She was accomplished, breaking into the firmament of what could be mainstream exposure but she was unfulfilled inside. When the producer asked her what she wanted to do, she simply replied: “Sing old soul.” Jessie continues: “He said, ‘why not just do it?!’ The stars aligned for me when I heard that. It hit me in my gut—I could find a place for myself in this world.”

13906974_1059642580751864_2739163452071023215_nJessie’s muddy river musicality courses through Al Green, Gladys Knight, Billie Holiday, Mavis Staple singers, Sam Cook, Otis Redding, the haunting tradition of field hollers, and the messy side of life for a dark, redemptive quality. “What I want in my own music is the sound of crying. When I sing, I want my voice to sound like weeping,” she confides. “I want to rattle cages.”

Jessie’s talent as a musician was apparent as far back as high school where she was entrusted to sing for graduation and, later, recruited to sing opera on scholarship for Mercer University. She finished college at Belmont University in Nashville, specializing in commercial music. Upon graduation, she apprenticed in the pop country industry, worked at an esteemed Triple A radio station, and lent her vocal gifts to demo recordings for songwriters and publishers. Her singing prowess in this context caught the attention of a respected label putting together a singing group. Jessie passed on the opportunity and instead worked briefly with one of the other artists, eventually joining him and his band on a month-long tour. That experience would be formative, imbuing Jessie with the confidence and bravery to search for the pure music within, away from the whims of the industry.

Her search would continue with an EP and album release that edged close to the soulful authenticity she sought. Jessie dipped her toe in the pop business one final time, winning a singing competition hosted by the Nashville Predators. In 2014, Jessie met producer Neilson Hubbard (Matthew Perryman Jones, The Apache Relay, The Orphan Brigade) who intuitively understood the dirty water soul coursing through her heart and mind. From that connection, it seemed there was something in the ether and the wheels hit the pavement. Soon after, Jessie inked a sync licensing deal with Indie Orange, and, on a lark, she covered Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” for a YouTube video that wracked up 15,600 views.

Jessie’s Singles Project channels her refined talents, her business savvy, and her most formative musical inspiration, soul, into one profound artistic endeavor. In the series, there will be a total of 10 tracks that will eventually be anthologized with earlier singles into one full album.

The vibe on this collection is dark, melodies live between the crevices of pop conventions giving off of an emotional rawness that shakes you to your bones. “I love the messy part of life. I want my music to be nasty and stank face gross,” Jessie affirms. “I sing what I want, what is true to me.”

Jessie’s oeuvre personalizes the minor key wailings of spirituals. Her vocals are a revelation, they combine a natural affinity for soul, boundless musical gifts, a natural drawled delivery, and commanding raw emotionality that manifests itself in distinct vocal phrasing including bent notes and elegiac melodic motifs. Highlights in the program of releases include the stirring, “Been In The Storm” which also features a companion video, the rollicking and greasy, “Secrets In The Hollow,” and the nakedly expressive ballad, “Take A Chance On Me.”

In 2010, Jessie had that transformative meeting with a producer. Though she had many compromisingly commercial successes after that, slowly she became brave enough to embrace the core of her artistry: soul. “I had been doing what other people wanted for so long, I had to really be brave to be myself,” she says. “Sometimes you get tested, you have to sit in dark corners to grapple with situations, but what you realize is the best you can do is be yourself. I have so much peace now that I’ve put myself out there, it’s been a wonderful gift.”

SVL 17-06 We Are All the Same Inside

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from February 7th

13465975_1353443327999975_9199359771397582948_n

If we were all blind death and dumb we may be able to see hear and feel.

Yes, people have different traditions, and yes the world is not going to agree to some practices that oppress a person’s freedom. But folks, we have so much more in common than we have apart and that is what we should be seeing.

1. We all need love and care to grow beautifully.

2. We all need food, water, nurturing to sustain our lives.

3. We all need to be seen heard validated to know we matter.

4. We all need a purpose that serves us and our community

5. We all need to belong to something that matters

6. We all need to feel life and the joy of living

7. We all need to contribute to what serves mankind

8. We all need to find that love within to find our peace and meaning of life

So we may see things from a  different view in life, we all may communicate in a different way, we all may need different things at different times, but we all need something to survive.

So why can’t we explore each other’s points of view without hate or fear or dictatorship and in respect or each other listen to that point of view?
