Set mostly in Latin America, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale of an idealistic, naïve Peace Corps volunteer who suffers a series of traumas abroad, leading to unlikely friendships. At 23, Peter has enlisted in the Peace Corps and finds himself teaching beekeeping in a tiny village in Paraguay. When a lynch mob kills several people in his local village after a disagreement over harvest proceeds, Peter flees with his 12-year-old homeless friend in search of safety—taking him through an indigenous community, a Mennonite colony, a squatters camp, and finally the lawless, chaotic city of Ciudad del Este, where he meets a kind transgender sex worker.

Nearly two decades later, a midlife crisis compels the protagonist to return to Paraguay and find the friend who had helped to save his life so many years before. Through this journey, Peter discovers some hard truths about himself, his faith, and the fluidity of memory.

Peter Michael Johnson grew up in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Alabama. He studied English and philosophy at New York University before serving in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, where he taught beekeeping to rural subsistence farmers. After the Peace Corps, Peter moved to Senegal to compete on the amateur beach wrestling circuit. He has worked for a variety of nonprofit organizations for most of his adult life. His writing (all focused on his experience in Paraguay) has appeared in literary journals including Dappled Things, Seven Hills Review, and Rock & Sling and in a feature-length essay in the April 2017 issue of Christianity Today. He makes his home in Southwest Florida with his wife, Ashley, and three children.

Tricia talks about finding faith and life purpose amidst loss and tragedy. When her young daughter Elly died from Pearson syndrome, an extremely rare and incurable disease (just a handful of people in the world develop this), Tricia found faith and a commitment to helping others by becoming a Registered Nurse. It is her hope that this touching and poignant book, published more than two decades after Elly’s death, will bring us to a deeper understanding of God’s love. Tricia’s story shows us that when we are faced with uncertainty, the message is quite clear: We are never alone.

How one can discover a deeper faith, especially amidst tragedy and loss
After her daughter’s death, Tricia hit rock bottom. “I went through 18 months of my life existing and trying to be a mother and wife. I was numb beyond all measure. I felt so alone, yet I sensed that I wasn’t. In my experience of supernatural happenings and research, I believe that when faced with death, there is a reassurance of knowing that your loved one is never alone and neither are you.”
Why she encourages others to find light in darkness and to embrace love
What she and her husband were thinking when they received their daughter’s diagnosis and how the doctor basically said to go home and prepare a funeral. He also told them that 96% of married couples get divorced due to the loss of a child

Tricia says, “The inspiration for this book comes from my daughter’s bravery and the rarity of this syndrome. It was my husband who encouraged me to keep writing and most importantly, it was the Holy Spirit who led me on this journey. After my daughter’s death, I wrote an article on this syndrome but it was so in depth that how could I expect people without a medical background to understand this disease process. My goodness, we couldn’t even wrap our heads around it. So. years went by before I could actually sit down to write. Why? Because I had to complete my own understanding and my journey of God’s love in order to share it with you.”

Elly died from Pearson syndrome,

Patricia Brendel, RN, is the author of a touching and inspirational book, Heart Beat of Love. The author’s inspiration for her career was a painful, yet beautiful walk with her daughter Elly, who battled a rare and deadly disease called Pearson’s syndrome.

This path gave her a greater admiration for life, with a deeper perspective of understanding, knowledge, compassion, and love. She carries these qualities not only for her family and friends, but also for her patients and for the family members who walk in the wave of their loved one’s sickness. She has worked in multiple fields of nursing, which include hospital emergency, psychiatric care, school nursing, and health/wellness.

She also was a director of a program that bridged the physical and mental health arenas. Brendel’s work was recognized with an award, the Rural Health Program of the Year for the Total Health Program. Brendel earned an Associate Degree in Nursing Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2005. She is also certified in CPR/First Aid/ AED.
In addition to Elly, Brendel has two daughters and four grandchildren. Born and raised in Wilcox, PA, she has lived in DuBois, PA and Ridgway, PA. She is back in her hometown, where she lives with her husband.

8 years ago Laura became a financial advisor. Prior to that she had a brief stint as a recruiter, and before that she was a real estate agent and sold foreclosures during the great recession. It was during that time that she started to become really interested in personal finance. She saw how flawed financial decisions resulted in people losing their homes and their incomes.
