My book incorporates an in-depth understanding of trauma through the prism of the false self, and makes the bold claim that one can find joy and fulfillment by embracing and transcending the false self. This path of inner work is also immensely relevant on a macro level, for as we own our Soul’s curriculum we are empowered to solve the major challenges unfolding in the world around us.

After decades of wide-ranging professional experience, along with navigating my own challenging and blessed life journey, I’ve come to some core understandings about who we are as human beings and the process of mentoring personal transformation. Here’s what I’ve discovered:

  • Each of us has a unique and natural Authentic Self, an eternal presence that longs to be known, breathed into, and lived from.
  • Difficult and painful transitions in life are one of the ways our Authentic Self has of gaining our attention and inviting us into powerful seasons of change and new direction.
  • We each carry a unique constellation of dreams we’re designed to manifest in this lifetime.
  • Self-compassion is intimately related to sourcing our creativity. We can embrace vulnerability as not a weakness, but an ally.

My professional background and experience:

  • A licensed marriage and family psychotherapist since 1983 with a wealth of experience facilitating transformational work with individuals, couples and entrepreneurial leaders. My specialty is supporting people in the midst of fertile life transition
  • Serving on faculty for 16 years at the University of Santa Monica in California from 1987-2002, co-facilitating the pioneering Masters Degree program in Spiritual Psychology
  • Designing and facilitating a wide range of transformational workshops, including:

After spending the majority of my years in Southern California and raising three beautiful children, I’m blessed to have relocated to the Pacific Northwest. I now live in a beautiful waterfront home on Lake Stevens, 30 miles north of Seattle.

I am continually immersed in discovering new psychological and spiritual modalities that support me in evolving to new levels of healing and awakening. I have many passions, including: cherishing international travel, enjoying peaceful kayak outings on alpine lakes, and daily partaking of the healing presence and beauty of nature in all its forms.

Raising Our Gifted Children with Sara troy and her guest Norma Jean Maxwell, on air from January 31st

After working in the public school system over the last 2 decades, I watched the slow decline and clawing back of resources for those kids that don’t learn well in a classroom setting.  I watched the schools fade out and move away from teaching basic foundation literacy and math skills into a more politicized agenda and I watched more and more bright children fall through the cracks – getting to high school, still unable to read and do basic math.

It’s heartbreaking to me when I see a child, who could be very successful, fail to fulfill their potential because they are not being taught in a way that makes sense to them.  After many years of successfully supporting and teaching these kids and being unable to find a program that incorporates all the components needed for early literacy, I decided to create  my own based on my training and many years of successes with children.

Every child can learn and if they aren’t, we need to look to the teacher to find out why not!

I am the MOM of two grown young men who both had learning challenges and struggled in the current school system.  They were the square pegs that didn’t quite fit in the round holes.  I also have a brother who has dyslexia and I saw how his negative school experience left lasting scars (additions, being the tough guy to compensate for feeling stupid).

I worked in the Surrey public school system for 18 years in special Ed, until I retired a couple years ago… mostly out of frustration over the current system’s failures

I am a trained Orton Gillingham Therapeutic Tutor which means I am a reading & spelling specialist and I’m a Behaviour Interventionist with extension experience working with kids on the spectrum.  

And after watching my own kids’ struggles and also seeing all the kids, bright kids, that are falling through the cracks because they are not getting the support they need and deserve, I developed my own teaching model based on my Orton Gillingham training and my personal experience.  It is a multi-sensory, fun & playful approach that works for all kids and keeps them engaged

I have a lot of success stories under my belt and it’s because I’ve seen how effective my methods are that I created Time to Shine Teaching, the training and the resources that will help best support a child’s learning.

I have watched with amazement as a child flourishes with the right instruction and support… I have lots of stories…

I also strongly disagreed with the CV protocols that the schools implemented and I think we won’t know all the lasting implications for many years…  teachers and kids wearing masks limited the children’s exposure to proper language and social/emotional development.  I also think we instilled too  much fear in our children (of others, of themselves…)

My avatar is really homeschool parents (and public school parents) who recognize that the school system is failing our kids and who are looking for a better way to teach their children.

Nature of Addictions with Sara Troy and her guest Jason Umidi, on air from January 24th

Sobriety has a wonderful way of bringing all things into the light, if you’re willing. Detox finally opened the door to sustained sobriety for actor Jason Umidi on January 10, 2012. Gratitude for a life that’s been redeemed and restored permeates his entire being. His sobriety requires him to live in the moment and his faith asks him to lead a life of service, loving as he has been loved. 

After being clean and sober for a couple of years, Jason was looking to share his personal journey on Facebook in the hopes that someone might be encouraged by his story. This developed into a series of popular, short blog posts about addiction, recovery, and hope, known as “Today’s One Minute Reads.” Jesus & Seltzer is Jason’s curated collection of his One Minute Reads.

In Jesus and Seltzer, Jason starts each inspiration page with a quote by a person, actor or character, from which he has gathered strength in his daily journey in sobriety.

As a pastor’s kid who grew up in the church, Jason had his fair share of Sunday services. However, none of them prepared him for the disappointments in life – whether it was the relationship that didn’t work out, the dream job that never materialized, the loss of health, or the death of a loved one. For most, it’s simply the dreams that never came into fruition. Church and its collection of “do’s & don’ts” for how to live your life didn’t soothe his broken soul. His faith faltered during his personal struggles, as the chronic pain from 5 spine fusion surgeries overwhelmed him and his bipolar depression left him feeling empty and dead. Jason found alcohol, prescription opioids and fentanyl to be a much better comfort. In 2012, Jason began his sober journey. His renewed life in the spirit promises that all things work together for good for those who love God, and are called according to his purpose. Jason is now helping others as a recovery coach. He is the author of the new book,
