TSM15/32 Playing to Reduce Stress in Kids

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Michele Kambolis from Harbourside Family Counseling Centre aired August 11th

One in five children has a diagnosable mental disorder; one in eight experienced clinical levels of anxiety. Amidst these extremes, every family must deal with some level of childhood stress: worries about changes at home, school pressures and scary headlines. What caused this surge in anxiety in our young people? How can parents combat this? Esteemed child and family therapist Michele Kambolis combine theory and practical, play- based activity to help this ‘generation stressed’.

Kambolis shows how to translate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques from her book Generation Stressed into fun, playful exercises that can be practised by parents with their children. CBT is the top, evidence-based toolset to reduce childhood anxiety; it teaches children powerful ways to change their thinking patterns and actions to decrease stress and increase resiliency.

Michele-Kambolis1-560x660Children experiencing high levels of anxiety are more likely to be physically sick, experience additional social problems, suffer from weakened brain development, and be less financially independent in later life. At a time when mental health is at the forefront of many parents’ priorities, Kambolis demystifies methods that ensure our children’s mental well-being. At the heart of these methods is a focus on joyful parenting and the relationship between parent and child.

Michele Kambolis (MA) is a registered Child and Family Therapist and Parent Educator dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues. She is currently pursuing her PhD program in Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University and is passionate about supporting global health initiatives. Her book, Generation Stressed, has received widespread praise from therapists, families and media alike. Kambolis writes a popular weekly parenting advice column, Parent Traps, for The Vancouver Sun.

Michele shares with us an easy to use handbook which offers original, engaging and effective exercises developed by Kambolis that you can use at home, on the road and in social settings to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety in your child.

“Here they are, the ones that will make the changes we so desperately need.”

GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Our bodies are not designed to digest these foods, and the chemicals they use in pesticides are causing our bodies to break down.

Studies in humans reveal that GMOs leave behind harmful material in our bodies linked to cancer in humans, and in animal studies, GMOs have been associated with organ damage, immune disorders, and accelerated aging early death.

Without GMO labeling laws, what can you do to protect yourself from hidden GMOs that continue to threaten your health and wellbeing?

We have a voice, and it starts here and now with young people like Daniel and his parents. We have the power to change things by buying local and organic, make your voice heard in the grocery store, buy organic and be aware of the foods you eat.

P15/17a Millennial Parenting

Positive Living Vibrations with Sara Troy and her guest Jake Greene, originally aired April 28th 2015.

MILLENNIAL PARENTS is a creative collaboration between filmmakers Natalie Irby and Jake Greene. The weekly web series is inspired by Jake’s life as a defenceless new father. “This generation now has a web series to capture the era’s most pressing parental issues, or at least make us laugh about them.”

Millennial Parents PLV pic

Parenting has changed a lot over the decades and so have children, Millennial Parents shows us some poignant and humorous videos on parenting that while making us laugh also questions our parenting skills.

Jake Greene (Co-Director, Writer) has two boys under three years old. When he’s not pounding coffee or trying to keep his kids out of the street, he writes and develops television and web projects.  Jake is also a Millennial author and keynote speaker. His first book, “Whoa, My Boss is Naked” was an irreverent career guide for entry-level Millennial employees. Now, as an entry-level Millennial parent, Jake doesn’t have time to write silly books so he makes silly videos instead.

The cast are excellent story tellers, truly delivering on their craft.

Founder of Holistic World Ltd

22618_679959168776029_6769403402265191229_nholisticI founded Holistic World with the vision of opening Holistic World centers globally. The mission of the centers being that to provide a modern day sanctuary on the high street for the mind body and soul. Stemming from my wish to provide inspiration and good well-being for my children and children all over the world I had the idea to write a series of children’s  yoga books which  children   could read and enjoy individually or with an adult.    The aim of the Magnificent Me, Magnificent You series is to highlight to children the many wonderful qualities they have within and also the amazing beauty and power of the natural world.

Each book in the series has an adventure based around a Natural Wonder of the world, along with lots of fun activities to inspire mind, body and soul. My inspiration and ideas for the books have been drawn from my own personal life experiences such as running up Table Mountain, swimming with turtles in the sea, doing fire walks, giving birth to my children plus lots more.
