Efrat Shokef, PhD, received her degree from the Israel Institute of Technology in Social-Organizational Psychology and is a Fulbright Alumni. She was profoundly transformed by a near-fatal car crash and simultaneous Near-Death Experience. Drawing from the profound insights of her ‘after-life’ encounter, she infuses the beauty and wisdom gained into her roles as a mother, writer, teacher, and healer. Guiding both her own family and numerous clients, Dr. Shokef invites parents to rediscover their soul’s purpose and shared agreements. The driving force behind my work is the urgent crisis of children’s mental health crisis and safety online in 2024, a concern that disrupts my sleep and ignites a deep sense of emergency within me. The realisation that in 2024, our children are not safe anywhere on-line has propelled me into action. Disturbing scientific reports showing a significant increase in mental illness driven by excess consumption of online sexual content, alongside the negative impact of social media, highlight the critical need for immediate intervention.

Parents, often the first and only line of defence, are grappling with the challenge of safeguarding their children. My work is inspired by the urgent need to empower clinicians and educators and parents/carers with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to protect their children from the myriad threats they face online. It’s driven by a commitment to transform the digital space into a safer, healthier environment for our young people, where their mental and emotional well-being is protected. This mission, rooted in a deep concern for the well-being of our children and the desire to make a tangible difference, motivates me to continue developing and advocating for solutions that can address this pressing issue.

In today’s digital age, the rise in cyber victimisation and sexual exploitation poses a significant mental health crisis for our youth. The Internet Watch Foundation’s 2023 findings reveal an alarming increase in online child sexual abuse content, much of it self-generated under coercion. Coupled with nearly unrestricted access to digital content, this environment fosters mental health challenges, notably self-harm, suicide ideation, anxiety, ADHD, and eating disorders, which are often linked to childhood trauma and the relentless pressures of social media and excess screen time. BEING SEEN ultimately, is the BIG IDEA, and the special and unique aspect of my work lies in its blend of scientific insight, innovative solutions, and unwavering commitment to positively impacting the digital well-being of children and families. Through “BEING Seen” advocacy, books, and podcasts, I am integrating neuroscience with a deep understanding of the digital landscape’s effects on youth mental health to protect children’s mental health. My work offers comprehensive solutions that mitigate risks and foster resilience and positive mental health among young people.

“As a teacher, I’ve always believed that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in the classroom. But it became increasingly clear to me that some of my students, particularly those who are neurodivergent, were facing challenges with their behavior. It wasn’t a matter of them being ‘bad’ or ‘difficult’ kids; rather, they simply lacked the tools and strategies they needed to navigate their emotions and interactions effectively.

By implementing ABA strategies in the classroom, I witnessed remarkable transformations. Students who once struggled with outbursts and meltdowns learned to regulate their emotions and communicate their needs more effectively. They gained confidence and independence, and their academic and social skills flourished.

It’s not just about managing behavior; it’s about empowering children to succeed in all aspects of their lives. And that’s why I’m proud to be both a teacher and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at Circle Care Services, where I can continue to make a difference in the lives of children with autism.”

Did you know that one of the most important ways to help your child is simply by talking with them frequently starting as early as birth? The period of birth to age five is a crucial time for language development because at this age the spoken word develops naturally as a result of various types of stimulation. Brain growth, self-confidence, and vocabulary can be enhanced through talking, playing, and reading with your child every day. As parents and caregivers interact with their little one, they can use various strategies and techniques at home or when on the go to help their child develop communication skills. This all begins by having an understanding that children under the age of five experience the majority of their learning opportunities during regular daily routines and playtime. When you take the time to adjust your day-to-day interactions and your everyday routines that you are already engaging in, you can increase opportunities for speech and language development in your child and share special bonding moments together. So, let’s take advantage of daily routines that allow your child to understand and use language and get them ready for school success!!
