justin-johnson

“for the LOVE of Music” with Sara Troy  and her guest Justin Johnson, on air from February 28th

You have not heard guitar like this before, the blues sultry exuding out of each note, and the uniqueness of the guitars made from anything from a spade to oil cans, just shows you, that when you ARE the music you can make anything into music.

Justin Johnson has toured the world as a performing musician throughout mainland Australia and Tasmania, Europe, The United Kingdom, and coast to coast in North America.

Justin Johnson’s original song “Midnight at the Crossroads,” from his Smoke & Mirrors double album, was licensed to Florentine Films for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary film “Jackie Robinson.”

“In the Pines” from Smoke & Mirrors was licensed to ad agency Wieden + Kennedy for the “Dodge Brothers” national ad campaign for Dodge Motor Company.

“Grinnin in Your Face” from Smoke & Mirrors is featured on NPR Back Porch Music’s “Best of Back Porch Music Vol. 18: Old Enough to Know Better” 2015 Compilation Album.

Justin Johnson founded “Roots Music School” in Nashville, TN.  Under this umbrella, he has released an Instructional Series currently consisting of 5 DVDs and a Book on Roots Music technique and theory.  As Roots Music School founder, Justin Johnson has partnered with educators across the country to develop Roots Music curriculum for schools.

1508997_624844530925554_1654675733_nNashville-based Roots Blues and Americana artist Justin Johnson has been hailed by Guitar World as a “must-see act,” lauded as an “American Master” by John Carter Cash, and a “musical visionary” by Ted Nugent, has had his “funk” praised by Bootsy Collins, and his musical approach described as “timeless” by North Mississippi Allstar frontman Luther Dickinson.  He has been recognized as Slidestock International Slide Guitar Champion, and his original music has been licensed to Wieden & Kennedy, Dodge Motor Co, Ken Burns, Florentine Films, and the list keeps growing.
Always innovating and following his own sound while taking inspiration from the past, Justin Johnson blurs the lines between the traditional and the cutting edge, taking current day music back to its roots and keeping the blues alive.

LM 17-08 Under the Piano with Craig Addy

for the LOVE of Music, with Nathen Aswell and his guest Craig Addy, on air from February 21st

craig-addy

Craig is a member of the Amicus Music Duo, the Quiet hearts Ensemble and the founder and creative director of Under the Piano.

Canadian pianist and composer Craig Addy’s training in music was very traditional. From an early age, he studied classical piano, music theory and history. By his mid-twenties, he had two music degrees: One from the University of British Columbia and one from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. However, during all of those years of disciplined studies, Craig was secretly exploring another world of music……the world of improvisation. Craig’s style of improvisation is a unique blend of classical, new age, and popular. His improvisations are created in the moment with no predetermined harmonies, rhythms or melodies.

Under thePiano

Today, Craig has developed his improvising into a unique experience called Under the Piano. Clients lie underneath Craig’s grand piano. Under the Piano is a Sound Spa for Body, Mind and Soul. For 45 minutes the vibrations of the improvised music envelope and massage the individual or couple under the piano. The experience is most frequently described as calming, relaxing, magical and meditative.

Amicus Music Duo

Vancouver’s Amicus Music Duo features Craig Addy on the piano and Howard Meadows on the clarinet. Their repertoire includes music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century eras in addition to a growing list of original compositions, and improvisations. The Amicus Music Duo adapts and arranges much of their music.  Craig and Howard met while studying music at UBC and sang together in the award-winning University Singers. A shared love for vocal and choral music strongly influences their approach to performing and their repertoire selections.

Quiet Hearts Ensemble

Founded in June 2013, Quiet Hearts Ensemble has been providing one of Vancouver’s most exquisite and unique experiences with their Music Oasis series at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church. Music Oasis is an intimate and relaxing musical occasion that is like a holiday away from everyday pressures. The Quiet Hearts Ensemble improvises, or rather spontaneously composes, beautiful music in one of Vancouver’s most stunning cathedral acoustics. Listeners are transported, moved and inspired by enchanting flavours of music embracing classical, new age, jazz, folk and world styles. It’s romantic. It’s meditative. It’s soothing. Listeners rave that they “can’t believe” these musical journeys are composed on the spot.

Chris Gill a native of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, is a captivating singer/songwriter whose lyrics are masterfully showcased by his passionate musicality and engaging performance. Chris is proficient on guitar and drums, and a natural on piano. The reality of his songs explores and challenges all that is country music.

Chris has been playing and writing music since the age of 9 and started playing the local clubs and Legions at age 13. Originally a drummer in numerous bands, he then became involved in vocals, and finally became the lead singer.

His songwriting began in his teenage years when he wrote and recorded 4 vinyl single releases, including “New York to California”. All received considerable airplay radio across Canada. Throughout the 90’s he released another three songs to the radio through compilation CDs and independent releases.

In 2003, his debut CD, “Tell Me How” a 14 song CD of all original compositions was released. The title track from this CD was nominated for Country Recording of the Year at the ECMA’s and positioned him at a feature songwriters circle at the Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA).

In 2009, Chris released an all-origina Holiday CD, ‘This Is Christmas’. A blend of traditionally inspired songs with a modern twist. Touching to all who have love, children and the fun that the season brings.

SVL 17-06 We Are All the Same Inside

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from February 7th

13465975_1353443327999975_9199359771397582948_n

If we were all blind death and dumb we may be able to see hear and feel.

Yes, people have different traditions, and yes the world is not going to agree to some practices that oppress a person’s freedom. But folks, we have so much more in common than we have apart and that is what we should be seeing.

1. We all need love and care to grow beautifully.

2. We all need food, water, nurturing to sustain our lives.

3. We all need to be seen heard validated to know we matter.

4. We all need a purpose that serves us and our community

5. We all need to belong to something that matters

6. We all need to feel life and the joy of living

7. We all need to contribute to what serves mankind

8. We all need to find that love within to find our peace and meaning of life

So we may see things from a  different view in life, we all may communicate in a different way, we all may need different things at different times, but we all need something to survive.

So why can’t we explore each other’s points of view without hate or fear or dictatorship and in respect or each other listen to that point of view?
