Thier Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Evelyn Obahor aired August 25th/15
RAPE…..Is not to be taken lightly and is no laughing matter IT SCARES FOR LIFE
SMILING FLIRTING EVEN OVERT SEXUAL ATTENTION IS STILL NOT AN INVITATION TO RAPE.
Being a sensual and sexy woman is not an invitation or permission to RAPE. BEING A WOMAN IS NOT PERMISSION TO RAPE.
Being a child a wife an innocent is not permission for you to rape. Why is it that some men think that a woman being friendly or living in her own sensuality means that she is rapable? How can any man look at a child and think sexual thoughts and ACT ON THEM?
It is shameful that in this day and age with so much global information we still have to address the issue of a girls, women’s, boys right to say NO and not be raped and that some cultures still think they have the RIGHT to RAPE.

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Alvin Law aired from August 18th
Start an Attitude Revolution
Imagine if everyone in your organization saw themselves, and each other, as leaders. If they positively influenced each other by proactively jumping in and making things happen. If they inspired each other by consistently operating from a mindset of ‘yes’.
What could you accomplish? How far could you go? Maybe you need to work to be awesome
Like you, attitude expert and bestselling author Alvin Law has heard a lot of clichés about cultivating a positive attitude. But are any of them true? Does a positive attitude really guarantee success in life? Should we force ourselves to think positively, no matter what our situation? Will mantras and sound bites change how we view ourselves and the world? Or are we thinking about attitude all wrong?
With over three decades of professional speaking and over five (ahem) decades of experience living life without arms, his view is radically different.
Alvin’s mission is to spark a worldwide Attitude Revolution. Attitude Revolutions happen because people are inspired, from within themselves, to practice cultivating a more proactive and effective outlook on their lives. Alvin knows, and demonstrates to his audiences, that attitude is not about touchy-feely platitudes or ‘thinking positive’ – attitude is how we look at and interpret life overall. It is a skill that can be learned, and that must be practised. It is a tool that can be used. Most importantly, it can’t be imposed upon people – it has to come from a genuine place.
Alvin uses his story to challenge audiences to rewrite the negative stories they tell themselves about themselves; to stop feeling like victims in their lives and get proactive; to stop making excuses and start making choices. His fusion of storytelling, musical performance and down-to-earth humour connect with his audiences at an intimate, intense and individual level. Over 7,500 organizations on five continents, including Cisco Systems, Pfizer and Telus, have used Alvin to ignite, engage and transform their people.
Born with no arms as a result of the drug Thalidomide, Alvin was adopted by a family who taught him to use his feet for hands – and who by doing so gave him the gift of freedom. In addition to being a professional speaker, he is a trained broadcaster, fundraiser, award-winning musician and bestselling author. He has earned the designation of Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), an honour possessed by less than ten percent of professional speakers worldwide. In 2009, Alvin was inducted into the Canadian Association of Speakers (CAPS) Hall of Fame.
Prior to his career as a professional speaker, Alvin worked for non-profit groups, in advertising and public relations, the civil service, and has even run for public office (unsuccessfully, but he got over it). He has appeared on countless telethons and media features and has been the subject of two award-winning television documentaries. He has played a direct role in raising over $175,000,000 for charity.
He shares his life with his wife and business partner, Darlene; his adult son, Vance; Raymond, the dog; and Trixie, the cat. They all live in beautiful Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Saras View on Life with Sara Troy aired July 21st-27th
We hear so many stories these days on corrupt police and of the down and out communities in our city’s, but this is a story of dignity, of caring for each other, of looking out for each other. When you give a dam, spend some time with people and DON’T JUDGE, you see humanity uniting to support each other. Thank you Staff Sgt. Mark Horsley for seeing life as it can be.
Vancouver Police Department Vancouver police Staff Sgt. Mark Horsley went undercover in the Downtown Eastside in May and June 2015 as a wheelchair user in an attempt to find a person who is attacking people in wheelchairs.
A veteran Vancouver police officer went undercover as a wheelchair user with a brain injury in an attempt to catch those responsible for a spate of violent attacks on people in wheelchairs since January 2014.
Equipped with a $16,000 wheelchair borrowed from GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre and a backstory that he became an incomplete quadriplegic in a motorcycle accident, Staff Sgt. Mark Horsley spent five days and nights in the Downtown Eastside leaving himself vulnerable to an attack.
“Essentially our operator was our bait, and we were trying to catch the predator,” Insp. Howard Chow said at a news conference Thursday.
Despite intentionally leaving cash hanging out of his fanny pack, he wasn’t robbed or attacked. Instead, Horsley was surprised and inspired by the volume of kindness and compassion he received from the community.
Two young men talked to him and returned an hour later with pizza. One man bent down to zip up his fanny pack. In more than 300 interactions, some of which involved bartering, no one took advantage of him or took any of his money – in fact, he walked away $24 richer.
“I was ready to be victimized. Our plan was just to take whatever the assault or the robbery was… I was really taken by the politeness, the courteousness,” said Horsley, who has been going undercover since 1986.
“In the DTES I found that far more people would get down to my level to talk to me,” he said, adding people would often check if he had someone to care for him.
Police didn’t find the person or people responsible for the 28 attacks on people in wheelchairs over the past 18 months (21 assaults, six robberies and one sexual assaults), the majority of which occurred in the Downtown Eastside.
But they aren’t considering this a failed operation. Instead, they’re using it as a chance to draw attention to the fact that it’s not just the police watching out for people who use wheelchairs – it’s the entire community.
“Part of what we’re doing, bringing awareness to a despicable person that might commit a crime like this,” Horsley said. “It’s an entire community that is supporting the vulnerable.”
TUNE IN HERE FOR INSTANT LISTENING NOW
Walt Lawrence, a peer support worker who has used a wheelchair for 46 years after a diving accident, helped coach Horsley to use the chair. He called Vancouver fortunate to have such caring and compassionate individuals and said he feels bad for the perpetrator who has fallen to that level.
Ian Denison of GF Strong agreed. “If these perpetrators get wind of the video, they might be thinking twice.”
NEVER JUDGE, NEVER TURN A BLIND EYE, NEVER ASSUME, AND NEVER STOP CARING FOR EVERYONE NO MATTER THEIR SITUATION.
Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Daphne Chan originally aired July 14th
We are becoming a more embracing world of each others differences. We still have a long way to go in understanding and showing compassion for each other, but with work like Daphne is doing, we are a step further.
Daphne is currently working on Transparency: The Gender Identity Project.
Daphne Chan’s work explores identity and how it reveals itself through gender, culture, sexuality and body image. With “The Flawless Sabrina” (2006) the fluidity of gender and sexuality were explored by documenting a drag queen named Jack Doroshow. The project delved into communal taboos of populations that rankle social precepts such as the gender identity of genderqueer: a person who identifies as a gender other than “man” or “woman”. The commonality is that all genderqueer people reject the notion that there are only two genders in the world as they believe binary gender is a social construct.
Next, “Her Interior” (2007) examines the conceptual conflation between women’s bodies and domestic interiors, how the identification between self and interior is linked with women. Each woman interacts with features of her environment in order to explore how she occupies that particular physical and psychological space. The fragmentation of the bodies emphasizes the compartmentalization that is inherent in women’s identities. “Transparency: The Gender Identity Project” is a visual depiction of the LGBT and genderqueer community of New York that is unique and much needed. There is still a lack of visibility of specific identities and uncovering these identities will challenge the common stereotypes for what certain identities are expected to look like. It’s a powerful statement in visibility and diversity. The goal is to celebrate and encourage the expansion and public awareness of queer fluid expression. The transgender community has historically faced systemic discrimination and this project provides a platform for visibility, recognition and eventual acceptance. With each project, Chan attempts to reveal one more aspect of our identity and to distinguish the physical corporeal grounding in our bodies and the amorphous, socio-cultural precepts layered upon us.
Each portrait is a collaboration between the subject and the artist and is created through an intimate artistic process resulting in a unique handmade fine art print.
