TSM26-43. Robin Rosenbluth Living with Strangers

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Robin Rosenbluth. On air from October 27th

At nineteen, after more than five years in the NY foster care system, I spent nine months teaching in a remote village in Northern Kenya as a student at Friends World College, an international college. As the only white, Jewish foreigner living with the Samburu and Rendille tribes, I found, over time, more connection with people there than I had with my foster parents. It is important to understand that we share a common humanity with people from vastly different cultures and nationalities.

While my childhood was difficult, I learned that allowing myself to be vulnerable (something I learned in Kenya) makes lasting relationships possible: to love and be loved. I wrote Living with Strangers: Healing a Wounded Heart in a Distant Land to encourage older foster youth that a happy adulthood is possible after care. I also want readers to understand from my experience living in Kenya how people from other cultures can be teachers, and that people from other nations, races, and religions share a common humanity.
