ECO22-18 Lisa D. Foster is the ‘Bag Lady,’

ECO Solutions with Sara Troy and her guest Lisa D. Foster, on air from May 3rd

Lisa D. Foster: is an entrepreneur, environmentalist, and author of ‘Bag Lady,’ who took the germ of a green living idea and grew it into a national business phenomenon. When she realized that Americans were throwing away a billion bags a day, Lisa D. Foster discovered reusable bags. Over the next twelve years, she changed the way Americans shopped. She remained true to her original purpose to reduce plastic waste and beat the odds to create a thriving company with an environmental mission.

Recounting my experience as a purpose-driven entrepreneur, my story provides a blueprint for using entrepreneurship to make the world better.

I’m very excited to announce that my book, Bag Lady: How I Started a Business for a Greener World and Changed the Way America Shops, released on Earth Day, April 22, 2022.

Those of you who have known me for a while may remember me in my previous career as a leading supplier of reusable bags in the US. If you have known me a really long time, you might even remember me as the high school English teacher I once was.

About a year ago, during the lockdown in the middle of the winter of Covid, I sat down to write about becoming obsessed with reducing plastic waste and transforming myself into the Bag Lady, an entrepreneur on a mission to get Americans to adopt reusable bags. Last fall, I found Tim Ward, publisher of Changemakers Books for John Hunt Publishing, who recognized the value of my story for other people that want to make a difference in their communities.

When I first learned about reusable shopping bags in 2005, the US was throwing away a billion plastic bags a day. The impacts of all those bags on our environment and our taxes kept me up at night. It hit my moral center. Getting other people to switch to reusable bags became for me, a moral imperative. I believed that if American shoppers knew what I knew, they would switch to reusable bags too. So, I did what any good English teacher would do. I took the facts about bags and turned them into a story. Then I took the story and turned it into the basis for starting a business for a greener world.

When I started, I had no idea how to build a business. I was an English teacher making cold calls overlooking the faculty parking lot. Very quickly, I found myself building an international supply chain and managing major accounts. I had to overcome the naysayers, an insanely steep learning curve, and my own mistakes. Ultimately, I beat the odds and created a thriving company with an environmental mission.

Now, I’m sharing the lessons I learned to inspire others to do the same.

22-17 Why do we not SEE in front of us?

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from April 26th

Are we too much in a hurry to see what is in front of us? Do we skim over material and ignore the real info? Are we so saturated with exterior static that we can’t hear what we need to know? Are to rushing through life instead of enjoying each moment,?

We have everything at our fingertips LITERALLY. EVERYTHING IS A CLICK AWAY, BUT WE HAVE BECOME SO IMPATIENT THAT WE ARE NOT SEEING WHAT IS IN FRONT OF US. SLOW DOWN PLEASE.

Life is not meant to be a rush, there is so much to absorb around us that we are missing because we do not give anything time. We do not read the information in front of us, then we ask stupid questions when the answer is always there. We do not take the time to listen because we are rushing to the next thing. We are not taking in what we need to know because we are dictating what we want to hear.

Let us slow down, one step at a time, see what is in front of us, take the time to read the details, hear what is being said, feel the information, and reflect on its meaning. I am a podcaster, I do get frustrated when people do not take the time to read the outline of the show or instructions on how to listen to shows. If we just took a moment to look, we would see what we need to know.

All you have is the present, it is the gift of the now and the knowingness, be still listen hear, and apply, please.

Life is not meant to be rushed through but to savor each moment in all its glory and drudgery, for we learn to appreciate everything so much more when we do.

Can our devastations be opportunities for great transformation? Moments of devastation will visit everyone in life. Whether it is grief, illness, loss, or some other trauma, no one escapes. In Celine’s case, one of those moments was her diagnosis with breast cancer in 2016. As you join Celine on her journey from getting this life-changing news, to surrendering and ultimately choosing a path of transformation, you are prompted to reflect on your own life and how your personal traumas have shaped you into the person you are today. You will discover that every crisis is an opportunity to evolve and that despite the inevitable pain that comes with growth, life really is happening for you, not to you. It is always unfolding for your highest good. Packed full of practical tips and insights, this book is a reminder that you are not just a helpless victim of life. You are a powerful creator and life is actually trying to help you grow into the fullest version of you. I started writing after breast cancer in 2016 and Gifts from the Devastation is my second book. I secured a publishing contract with John Hunt Publishing in the UK after self-publishing my first book in 2019.

YH22-16 Dr. John Poothullill and Childhood Cancers

Your Health is Your Choice with Sara Troy and her guest Dr John Poothullill, on-air from April 19TH

If you are the parent of a child with cancer, the overwhelming multitude of questions, feelings, and associated anxiety is hard to contain. What caused the cancer? What can you as a parent do to help your child live through it? What is the future for your child?

In this insightful and thoughtful book, you will find information, hope, advice, and solace. Dr. John Poothullil expertly guides you to understand childhood cancer. He starts with his two new scientific theories to explain how the leading types of childhood cancers might occur, given that children have not lived long enough to develop the number of gene mutations that usually cause adult cancers.

You will learn how you as parents can care for your child with cancer with understanding and sensitivity, creating a loving home environment full of communal activities to reduce everyone’s stress and worry.

Most importantly, Dr. Poothullil explains why your child’s diet can be a key corollary element in controlling cancer along with the medical treatments. You will learn how a diet low in grains and grain-flour products slows cancer cell growth, giving your child’s immune system a better chance to contain it.

Dr. John Poothullil, MD, FRCP, has been investigating cancer for more than 8 years and food and nutrient intake for over 25 years. He is the author of three other books covering the topics of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

John Poothullill practiced medicine as a pediatrician and allergist for more than 30 years, with 27 of those years in the state of Texas. He received his medical degree from the University of Kerala, India in 1968, after which he did two years of medical residency in Washington, DC and Phoenix, AZ, and two years of fellowship, one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the other in Ontario, Canada. He began his practice in 1974 and retired in 2008. He holds certifications from the American Board of Pediatrics, The American Board of Allergy & Immunology, and the Canadian Board of Pediatrics.

During his medical practice, John became interested in understanding the causes of and interconnections between hunger, satiation, and weight gain. His interest turned into a passion and a multi-decade personal study and research project that led him to read many medical journal articles, medical textbooks, and other scholarly works in biology, biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology, and cellular metabolic functions. This eventually guided Dr. Poothullil to investigate the theory of insulin resistance as it relates to diabetes. Recognizing that this theory was illogical, he spent a few years rethinking the biology behind high blood sugar and finally developed the fatty acid burn switch as the real cause of diabetes. Recently his own cancer diagnosis lead him to research cancer and childhood cancer.

The valuable extra material in the book includes simple instructions to do gardening and cooking as calming activities to enjoy life for children with cancer. Three superbly illustrated short stories that parents can share with their children are also included.

This book is for anyone who has cancer localized to a single site and not yet colonized in another part of the body. It is also for anyone who believes they are at risk of cancer due to heredity, lifestyle, working conditions, or for any other reason. Surviving Cancer is especially important for people with Type 2 diabetes, with or without cancer, to learn about the link between the two.
