TSM23-29. Mindy Scheier designing for the Differently-Abled

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Mindy Scheirer, on air from July 18th

Before starting the Runway of Dreams Foundation in 2014, Mindy spent 20 years working in fashion as a designer for the INC collection and as a stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue.   Mindy was inspired to start Runway of Dreams after her son Oliver, who has Muscular Dystrophy, dreamed of wearing jeans like everyone else. After using her design skills to adapt jeans that met his needs and increased his confidence, she went on to conduct extensive research as to the modifications required to mainstream clothing to meet the needs of the largest minority in our world- people with disabilities.

In 2016, Mindy partnered with Tommy Hilfiger to make fashion history creating the first mainstream adaptive clothing line in the market. Runway of Dreams was founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need.  The foundation develops, delivers, and supports initiatives providing a platform to broaden the reach of mainstream adaptive clothing and promote people with disabilities (PWDs) in the fashion industry.  The 2022, the Runway of Dreams fashion show was recognized as one of the top seven NYFW shows by Forbes, highlighting the latest designs from the Adaptive category featuring brands such as Kohl’s, Target, JCPenney, Zappos.com and Tommy Hilfiger.

C23-28. Michelle Harwood, Gratitude for my Cancer

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Michelle Harwood Lange, on air from July 11th

Facing the diagnosis of cancer was like being hit by a freight train. The world as I knew it came to a screeching halt. But as I navigated through the fear, the pain, and the uncertainty, I discovered something profound. I discovered myself. Cancer, as strange as it may sound, became a gift. It stripped away the superficial layers of my life and forced me to confront my own mortality. It was in this confrontation that I found a deep, unshakeable love for myself. I began to appreciate my body, not for its appearance or its abilities, but for its resilience, its strength, and its will to survive. I found purpose in my journey. I realized that I am here to live, to experience, to grow, and to contribute. I am here to share my story, to inspire others, and to make a difference in whatever way I can. I am here to honor my existence and to live my truth. Through the trials and tribulations, I discovered my resilience. I found strength in places I didn’t know existed. I learned to lean into the discomfort, to embrace the uncertainty, and to keep moving forward, no matter how hard it got. Today, I live in honor of who I am and what I am here to do. I am not just a cancer survivor; I am a warrior, a beacon of hope, a testament to the human spirit’s indomitable strength. I am a living, breathing example of the transformative power of self-love and acceptance. Cancer did not break me; it made me. It brought me to a place of profound self-love, meaningful purpose, and acceptance of my very being. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

C23-28. Dee Lippingwell Canada’s Rock and Roll Photographer.

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Dee Lippingwell, on air from July 11th

Vancouver born and award winning photographer DEE LIPPINGWELL began her self taught professional photography career over 40 years ago. Her love of music propelled her into shooting local musicians and her success on that level led her into shooting all the world famous performers that we are so familiar with today.

Through her hard-edged determination and a commitment to photography, Dee has had her photographs published world-wide. Her candidly striking photos of the world’s most famous personalities adorn exhibit halls, magazines, newspapers, calendars and some of her prints were even selected for the National Library of Canada.
It has been her great honour to be the recipient of Canada’s Famous Women Award as the first woman in her field to earn this distinction of achievement, having been published in every major newspaper in Canada. More recently she was inducted into the BC Country Music Association Hall of Fame in recognition of her photographic contributions to the Association for over 25 years, adding hundreds of Country artists to her catalogue of Rock ’n Roll heroes!

In 2022 Dee’s collection of thousands of photographs was accepted into the National Music Centre – Studio Bell – in Calgary, Alberta, where a special section will be dedicated to her vast collection of photographs for all to see.
Although Dee’s work has been published all over the world since the start of her career she is definitely proud of the fact that she was a featured photographer in the best-selling “Expo Celebration Book” published in 1986. Her photographs were also a main feature of another best-selling book by Greg Potter and Red Robinson – “Backstage Vancouver”, published in 2004. She was also a substantial contributor to the “100 Years of Fun – The PNE Story”, released in 2011. Most recently Dee was part of the “Live at the Commodore” historical rendition by Aaron Chapman.

In 1987 Dee published her first book of photographs called “The Best Seat In The House”… a title since used by major companies to promote their own products! This book was a collection of her best photos of rock and roll royalty to that date. She started her own publishing company (No Flash Publishing) and compiled photos and stories for her second book, “First three Sons…No Flash!” which not only highlights the famous performers that she’s shot but also deals with the behind-the-scenes, sometimes amusing, stories associated with her concert photos…it seems that everyone wants to know what it’s like backstage with the Rolling Stones!

In 2021 Dee published “Memories From The Mountain”, a photographic essay depicting the 17 years (1993-2009) that she was the head photographer for the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. This was a Limited Edition printing and sold out quickly so another book was published featuring all the artists that performed over the year.

Just a sample of some of the greats Dee has captured over the years.

These books, a gallery of Limited Edition photos that she has for sale, find all her goodies here. Signed Books T-shirts. Tote-bags Scarves

23-28. Are you being Awesome?

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from July 11th

We often forget to give ourselves the credit we deserve. We’re so quick to focus on our flaws, our mistakes, our shortcomings. But what about our strengths, our talents, our unique abilities? Each one of us is a masterpiece, a blend of beauty and imperfection. We’re “flawsome,” as you put it, and that’s something to celebrate!

Are you acknowledging your own awesomeness? Are you embracing your unique gifts? If not, then it’s high time you do! Maybe you’re still on that journey of self-discovery, still peeling back the layers of who you truly are. And that’s perfectly fine. The important thing is that you’re on that journey, that you’re seeking to understand yourself better.

But remember, it’s not about living up to someone else’s expectations or standards. It’s not about becoming who others think you should be. It’s about discovering your own essence, your own truth. It’s about living authentically, embracing your individuality, and celebrating your unique self. So go ahead, discover your gifts, embrace your flawsomeness, and celebrate who you truly are!

Embarking on the journey of self-discovery, of understanding who we are and our purpose in life, is indeed a challenging path. It’s like navigating a road filled with twists and turns, bumps and potholes. But it’s through these challenges, these bumps in the road, that we truly discover our strength, our resilience, our capabilities.

Every bump, every obstacle, is an opportunity for growth. They test our mettle, push us to our limits, and force us to dig deep within ourselves. And it’s in these moments of struggle that we discover just how strong we really are, how skilled we are, and how resilient we are.

So yes, the journey can be tough, but it’s worth it. Because with every challenge we overcome, we become a little stronger, a little wiser, a little more resilient. And ultimately, we become more in tune with who we are and what we’re here to do. So embrace the bumps, celebrate the victories, and keep pushing forward. Because you’re stronger, more skilled, and more resilient than you think.

You know, it’s a funny thing, this journey of self-discovery. It’s like a dance, really. You take a step forward, then a step back, you twirl around a bit, and sometimes you even stumble. But that’s all part of the dance, isn’t it? It’s in those stumbles, those missteps, that we truly find our rhythm.

I started my dance quite late, at the age of 57, when I found my groove in podcasting. And what a dance it’s been! I’ve had the privilege of sharing and hearing so many incredible stories on my network over the past decade. Stories that make you laugh, make you cry, make you think. Stories that show the beauty of the human spirit, the resilience of the human heart.

And through these stories, I’ve not only seen the beauty in others but also discovered the beauty within myself. I’m not doing this for the applause or the accolades. No, I’m doing this for the sheer joy of the dance, for the illumination that comes from each story, for the liberation they bring.

Every step of our journey, every role we’ve played, every experience we’ve had, prepares us for what’s next. At 57, I was ready to step into the world of podcasting, not in spite of, but because of everything I had done before.

I’ve been a restaurateur, serving up meals and memories. I’ve been a dancer, expressing emotions and stories through movement. I’ve worked in retail, understanding the nuances of people’s needs and wants. I’ve been a DJ, setting the rhythm for people’s celebrations. I’ve been a mother and a wife, nurturing and supporting my loved ones. I’ve been a promoter, championing causes and people. I’ve been a coach, guiding others on their journeys.

Each of these roles has been a dance in itself, a unique rhythm, a distinct tune. And they’ve all prepared me for this dance of podcasting, a dance that liberates and illuminates. Each story I share, each voice I amplify, is a step in this dance. And it’s a dance I’m grateful to be part of.

So here’s to the dance of life, the dance of self-discovery, the dance of sharing and connecting. May we all find our rhythm, embrace our tune, and dance with all our heart.

So, let’s keep dancing, shall we? Let’s keep sharing these stories, keep illuminating the world with our experiences. Because each of your story’s is a step in our dance, a note in our symphony, a stroke in our masterpiece. And together, we’re creating something truly beautiful.

OCEAN DRUMMOND-BAKER
Ocean Drummond-Baker was born in, and lives in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. Ocean has an intense love for art & fashion. He had shown a keen eye for design by the age of 10, and by age 12, was a full blown sneakerhead and hype beast, well-known in the streetwear community. Going to every Sneaker Con he could talk his parents into paying for, Ocean was unique in this culture as compared to the masses that just wanted to collect, buy, and sell; he wanted to create. Create the clothing, create the logos, design the patterns, and build the shoes from scratch.

By age 16, Ocean was headed to Los Angeles to be the understudy of an established fashion designer, and while there, sitting at a sewing machine cutting patterns and smiling ear to ear, Ocean designed and created his first pair of Nike’s. This is the heart in which his company Natsukashii was born.
Ocean is an avid surfer and loves everything to do with water. He loves shopping, traveling hanging out in Tofino BC, trying new restaurants, and reading anime books. He is also a lover of music and music stores, especially ones that offer vinyl.
