TSM18-31 Navy SEALs: Target of Opportunity with J.D.Leete

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest J.D.Leete, on air from July 31st

FILMMAKER: J.D. Leete, is the creator of the film Target Of Opportunity and was a Naval Special Warfare Combat crewman (SWCC), the crew that supports Navy SEAL operations.

Target of Opportunity: The US Navy SEALs and the Murder of Jennifer Evans is the mind-bending documentary made by former Navy Chief and SpecWar operator JD Leete. His initial effort as a filmmaker upon retiring from the Navy explores the finer details of this troubling murder case. Leete questions everything that was reported at the time: motive; opportunity; and means of committing the alleged crime of abduction. Were the prosecutors in cahoots with a full-blown psychopath, Billy Brown, to convict Dustin Turner for an abduction that never occurred? Was Brown seeking revenge for what he perceived as breaking some warped code the two young men shared? Leete aims to find out and takes his camera along for the ride. What he finds changed his life and view of the world, as it may yours.

In 1995, Dustin Turner and his best friend Billy Joe Brown were in the final weeks of 15 months of training to become U.S. Navy SEALs. On the night of June 18, they went to a nightclub to celebrate and met a young woman named Jennifer Evans. They were the last two people to see her alive. Through eyewitness reports, evidence and testimony, the truth begins to emerge, or does it?

June 28 was a day Linda Summitt would like to forget. When that date rolled around, her son, Dustin Turner, had served 8,395 days behind bars for a murder he did not commit.

Mrs. Linda Summitt’s words: “You could say I’ve been through a living hell for 23 years.” If he serves his entire term—basically the rest of his life—he has more than 21,000 days remaining.”

It is particularly painful these days when Mrs. Summitt hears of the various pardons President Trump has announced and others he has publicly contemplated.

She is glad for the pardon of a grandmother who was held in a federal prison for many years, a woman who became involved in a crime to feed her children and keep her house.

In that celebrated case, reality star Kim Kardashian intervened and met with President Trump in the Oval Office. Shortly thereafter, she was pardoned.

The President has pardon power over federal crimes, but so does Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam over state crimes. Turner’s case is due to come before Northam within months.

“I’m not famous. I’ve never appeared on television. However, I would gladly travel from my Indiana home to Richmond, Virginia to plead personally with Gov. Northam for my son’s life.”

Dustin, often called Dusty, has served more than half of his life in prison, though another person has admitted he committed the crime.

Instead of languishing in prison, Turner has used his sentence to help others, creating an environmental program for the prison, and training dogs to help the handicapped. He has been a model prisoner.

This is the story of the one Navy SEAL who was left behind. The story of a young man, an Eagle Scout, a junior church deacon, who in one split second made a bad decision that would haunt him forever.

Mrs. Summitt’s words: “I am not saying Dusty is blameless. He made a mistake, but he has paid for it many times over. He adhered to a SEAL code to stand by his colleague.

Documentary maker J.D. Leete has spent the last 10 years working on and promoting a documentary about the Dustin Turner miscarriage of justice.

“The more people view the film, the better the chance of justice being done,” said Leete.

TH18-29 Feroze Dada, author of “Children Of The Revolution”

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Feroze Dada, on air from July 17th

Children of the Revolution A Spiritual Journey to Burma and Buddhism – A Powerful and Compelling Story of Heroism & Hope By Feroze Dada. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Children of the Revolution is a truly inspiring story about Feroze Dada, a Chartered Accountant from London, and his chance meeting with a freedom fighter and a Buddhist monk in Myanmar which transforms the lives of a great many orphaned and abandoned children being looked after in a remote monastery on the shores of Lake Inle by making the monastery financially independent – setting up a drinking water bottling plant and establishing a teaching programme. At the same time, the journey they take provides him with a deep and enduring sense of purpose and self-discovery.

His Holiness the Dalai Lamai has said – “Feroze Dada, gives a moving account of a monk’s work and talks about his own efforts to support a school and a care centre for destitute Burmese children started by the monk in his monastery. I offer my prayers for their success.” Children of the Revolution is not simply a book about Myanmar’s journey towards a new freedom, with all of the complexity that freedom brings. It is also a story of the author’s own journey: as a Muslim absorbing Buddhist philosophy and in so doing building a bridge towards peace which offers a transformative vision about how to live a meaningful life that will bring education and hope to thousands of Burmese children. Children of the Revolution is Feroze Dada’s first book. All proceeds of the book go to the monastery school and orphanage at Inle, Phaya Taung. Feroze Dada set up the Inle Trust Charity www.inletrust.org.uk to provide the relief of poverty and education in Myanmar and has so far has set up educational, healthcare and water facilities at the monastery.

The story behind Ko Yin Fresh Drinking Water

We were travelling on a small boat on Inle Lake when a freak storm hit the lake. We were put ashore in the village of Phaya Taung and were given shelter by the monks. What happened next changed our lives……….and we are now looking to change the lives of 1000 abandoned and orphaned children at the monastery.

Whilst staying at the monastery I discovered this clean mountain water source on the monastery land. Because of malaria and water-borne diseases, there is a huge need & demand for bottled water. It is clear that given the Monk’s reputation and the good work they are doing that the people in the surrounding towns and villages would buy this bottled water knowing that every bottle that they buy will pay for one meal for a young school child.

Feroze was born in Karachi. He has lived and worked for most of his life in London and is married to MuMu (Farida) Maung Dada. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax advisor he was Managing Partner of his private client tax practice in London Mayfair for 25 years. Feroze is also a guest interviewer with TVapex, a community TV channel where he has interviewed everyone from a Buddhist monk to the legendary Andrea Bocelli on the subject of humanity.

TSM 18-25 Compassion Dogs for Veterans with P.T.S.D.

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Barb Ashmead, on air from June 19th

Too often the trauma of military service leaves veterans with deep scars that make regular life challenging, if not impossible. At Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs, our goal is to offer our veterans and their families a reprieve from the suffering. VICD is a nonprofit organization that matches veterans suffering from a stress Injury like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with a compassion dog. Together, they embark on a unique 52-week service dog training program, that is as much about saving the person, as it is the dog.

Compassion dogs provide veterans with a living, breathing lifeline to the outside world. This powerful, primal bond between human and dog is a catalyst to peace, purpose and healing for our returning wounded.

Our Program
Serving Those Who Served.
Our service dog training program provides veterans with renewed purpose, confidence and unconditional support.

Our program begins by carefully matching veterans to their service dog. Broken into three distinct phases, veterans are led through twice-weekly training sessions over the course of one year. Guided by professional trainers, and a mental health clinical practitioner, the program is based on Integrated Victory Management, focused on rewards and accomplishments.

The goal of the program is the training and successful graduation of a fully certified Stress Injury Service and Support Dog (SI-SSD) that remains in the veteran’s care.

To ensure the program is available to everyone who needs it, all dog and travel-related expenses are covered by VICD. This includes dog food, veterinary treatments, obedience training, training equipment and gas cards to cover travel to class. VICD recognises the impact loved ones can have on a veteran’s recovery. We invite family and friends to attend our monthly support sessions to learn about the program and its methods.

The bond created through each team is life-altering. Our dogs learn to be emotionally tuned to their person and their unique triggers. They’re able to wake veterans from nightmares, ground them from a hyper-aroused state, and support them unconditionally through the stresses and trauma of everyday life.

Our Dogs

Our repurpose dogs have been donated from BC and Alberta Guide Dogs (BCGDS) and Pacific Assistance Dogs (PADS) Our rescue dogs have come from BCSPCA Alberni-Clayoquot (Port Alberni)

Tsm 18-19 Comfort Cases changing children’s lives with Rob Scheer

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Robert Scheer, on air from May 8th

On any given day, nearly 437,500 youth in the foster care system in the United States.  Of the thousands of youth who enter the system each year, most arrive carrying little more than the clothes on their backs.  If they are afforded the opportunity to collect any personal belongings, many are then given a trash bag in which to place and carry their personal items.  It is a time of great upheaval and instability, and their first foster home placement is unlikely to be their last.  Many youths in foster care will be moved from home to home multiple times, carrying their life’s treasures in a trash bag.  At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity.  Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their own.  It is our mission as a charity to provide a proper bag, filled with comfort and essential items, to these brave youth in foster care on their journey to find them forever home.

Every child deserves to know that they matter.  When Comfort Cases provides a case to a child in need, we not only offer them new items that they can keep during their journey, we also provide them with dignity and the notion that someone cares about what they are going through.

We have now reached youth in foster care in 34 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and Canada.  We have distributed over 30,000 Cases.  We are so excited by the progress, but also remain steadfastly focused on all the kids we haven’t reached yet.  With nearly half a million kids in care in the US, the need is great, and we have lots of work to do!  Our goal is to put a Comfort Case in the hands of all of the kids in care.
