C15/46b Politically Homeless …a Cultural Journey

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Mary Terzian on air from November 17th-

A universal struggle revealed in a personal story. This memoir is told against the backdrop of strict cultural upbringing, political turmoil and a young girl’s love for education propelling her toward independence.

Terzian’s story continues as her extraordinary biography – Politically Homeless . . . . .- unfolds with more adventures in her always honest and humorous voice.

Born in the Armenian diaspora, a young girl leaves her birthplace and community for an expatriate assignment in Africa. She seizes the opportunity to travel across three continents to find a niche where she can peacefully pursue her dreams.

Born in Egypt to immigrant Armenian parents, survivors from the great genocide, Mary is not encouraged to pursue higher education considered superfluous for young women then – in the 1950’s in Egypt.

Mary's2008pic[1] - Copy (2)Terzian is adamant to realize her dream. She accepts an offer from the World Health Organization to work in Alexandria, away from home, a very bold step in 1957. Five years later she qualifies for an expatriate assignment in Congo, a country in turmoil in 1962. During her home leave two years later she extends her vacation by another six weeks to travel across three continents in search of a niche where she could feel at home and pursue her interests for higher education. Her search spans eighteen countries, some visited for fun, others for serious consideration as a future home.

Terzian’s transfer to Lome, Togo, turns sour. She takes refuge in Lebanon hoping for permanent residence. Her passport expiring, her request for residence in Lebanon rejected, her last hope is to apply for immigration to the United States Embassy. To her great surprise, she is given a visa within a few months. On arrival in New York, she makes a beeline to Columbia University and starts working on her degree in Comparative Literature.

AS AN AUTHOR & WRITER

Writing has been my passion since I was a teenager. My mother encouraged us to read passionately. She believed in education. We catered to her expectations. After her death I continued reading feverishly and writing poetry secretly. I wrote diaries too. Since then writing remained a sideline until I retired and dedicated my time to writing only. I write non-fiction, a slice of life stories, articles, opinion pieces and books.

Both dopamine and serotonin help to balance moods – dopamine by helping to control impulsive behaviour, and serotonin to produce calmness and overall happiness.

Are you living in gratitude, are you embracing all you, are now are you BEing Inspired by life?

11919584_1093222690707629_6134113544258857040_nShe says she lived in two worlds for most of her life – a world of light and kindness that showed her how amazing and limitless she truly is, and a world of darkness that told her otherwise. She was verbally bullied for her looks, having undergone two eye surgeries before starting kindergarten, but she says it never really took her totally out of the game completely. Verna says it was the nurses at the hospital who initially gave her a great sense of self-worth. “They ignited and unleashed my true nature – my vibrant personality and big, kind spirit,” she says, “by simply allowing me to shine in every way.”  It was her family that nurtured self-respect, love of learning, and kindness towards people and animals. Verna is currently writing her second book, “Healing the Healer Within,” after facing her own demons and finding the key to rising above low self-esteem as a child and teenager. She seeks to speak world-wide because her passion for inspiring others to find their true brilliance and worth is so big that she says it cannot possibly contained within her current city of Calgary or even within Canada! She currently leads an online group of holistic healers and coaches, as is planning a Virtual World Summit for March, 2016.

About Bill Mackie

bill-238x3001 (1) ”I am a humble man who embarked on a life long journey with god at my side. There to guide and teach me on how to live life with true purpose, meaning and dignity.”

This is one of the many profound statements you  may encounter Bill making during a casual conversation with him because Bill does not consider himself to be a religious person nor does he follow any prescribed faith. His belief is that god is deeply embedded into the very genetic code we are made from and it is though the relationship with S.E.L.F. (Soul Enabled Life Force) that one discovers their true purpose and meaning in life.

Of all the things that people may not know about Bill from listening to his show here on SELF Discovery Radio is that he is the father of nine children, 5 of whom were born at home, and all 9 of them are also home schooled. After the birth of his forth child his wife decided to have a home birth. From that experience, his wife decided to build a website to share her birth story. Before both of them knew it, the site had grown to serving over 1 million web pages a month. Due to this rapid growth the site was converted into a membership based on line childbirth resource that served midwives, doulas, alternative prenatal and perinatal care and expecting parents from around the globe. Bill was also a contributing writer on the site and had many articles expressing the childbirth experiences from a male perspective. Both his wife and him were also very involved in raising awareness for and for fighting for the rights of women and men to make their own choices regarding childbirth. Though Bill is also a very strong advocate in breastfeeding and is very outspoken and respected for his views on this topic as well. So be sure to tune in for this very educational and provocative view on pregnancy and childbirth from a mans perspective.

Profile 3Kate Strong says “Where to begin”? It would be easy to start with something positive, such as “you never lose, you only learn” or “your greatest challenges hide your greatest lessons”, but this wouldn’t be just.
I doubt that anybody during their ‘greatest challenge’ ever boasts a huge smile and says “I’m so happy to be in the midst of some brilliant future lesson”.

Kate is a Welsh-born international traveller. She has spread her wings far and wide not only geographically but in every aspect of her life. Having embraced a vegan life style her performance in her sport and life had far out exceeded her expectations.

Danielle’s Vegan Fall recipe

Steamed And Roasted Stuffed Acorn Squash

squash

Stuffed acorn squash is fantastic any time but it is especially welcome during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays when turkey takes centre stage in many American homes. This dish is cooked mainly on top of the stove and for only the last 15 minutes in the oven. It not only cooks more quickly than baking or roasting alone, but I believe you end up with a more flavourful result.

Time: 50 minutes

Yield: 2 halves, stuffed

Serves 2 as a main course, 4 as a side dish

Ingredients:

2 oranges, juiced with pulp

3 tablespoons maple syrup, divided

1 cup water

1 large organic acorn squash

1 large red delicious apple*, seeded and chopped into 1/4-inch cubes, (about 2 cups)

1/4 cup chopped walnuts

1/4 cup raisins, preferably golden organic

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Method: 35 to 50 minutes

Preheat oven to 375ºF

Prep time: 10 minutes

Stovetop: 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the size of your squash

Oven time: 10 to 15 minutes

  1. Cut acorn squash in half, from stem to pointed tip. With a spoon, scrape out all the seeds and seed pulp until there is a clean hollow where the seeds were.
  2. In a large covered skillet or saucepan, mix the water, orange juice, and 1 tablespoon maple syrup. Stir to combine.
  3. Arrange squash in pan, cut side down. Arrange the raisins in the pan around the squash. Cover and bring to a boil. Allow to boil on high until tender. (If the water boils away too quickly add a little more, 1/4 cup at a time.) This will take 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the size of your squash. When it is tender and can easily be pierced with a fork or bamboo skewer, remove the lid and allow most of the liquid to boil away. Do not allow the thick liquid or the raisins on the bottom of the pan to burn.
  4. While the squash is steaming, chop apples and toss with cinnamon, nutmeg, walnuts, and 2 tablespoons maple syrup. Set aside. Once the squash is tender, transfer to a casserole dish or other baking dish with sides. Turn the squash cut side up. Scoop the remaining liquid and the raisins out of the pan and add to the apple mixture. Fill the cavities in the acorn squash with this mixture.
  5. Roast, uncovered, in a preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes. The apples should develop a caramel glaze and should still be firm. Do not allow to burn. Serve hot.

*Though Red Delicious isn’t typically a cooking apple, I like it in this recipe because it is sweeter than most apples and one of the most nutritious. Also because you are only wilting the apple rather than fully cooking it, it will continue to hold its shape and still have a little bit of a crunch.

Spicy Cranberry Chutney

cran

This dish is sweet and sour and spicy all at the same time. Prepared with whole ingredients and sweetened entirely with fruit you can eat as much as you want of this guilt-free, healthy condiment.  Red delicious apples are best with this dish because they are the most sweet, and actually one of the most healthy apples on the market. They will melt into the sauce, which is fine since it is not important that the apple maintain its shape. The ginger and cayenne give this sauce its signature peppery tang. Enjoy it as a side dish, a condiment or even as a sandwich spread.

Yield: about 4 cups

Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

12 ounces fresh or frozen whole cranberries

3 large red delicious apples, diced

1 large red delicious apple, puréed

8 large medjool dates, puréed

1 large orange, juiced (with pulp)

2 tablespoons orange zest

? cup raisins

3 tablespoons fresh ginger, finely minced

3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground Jamaican allspice

? teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional

Purée one apple with the dates and orange juice, adding a little water if needed.

Combine all of the ingredients into a saucepan and simmer 25 minutes at medium temperature uncovered.

Serve hot or cold.

Can be used as a condiment, side dish or sandwich spread.
