C26-20. Liz Goll Lerner. Action to Calling

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Liz Goll Lerner, on air from May 19th

The Journey of Becoming: From Inner Saboteurs to Soulful Strength

There are several ways that I come to the realm of healing and helping. I have long believed that whatever has been a struggle in my life that I have been able to overcome has within it some knowledge or experience that can help another find their own way through their difficulty or transformation. The keys I have uncovered that I believe are the most significant in any life journey are: Being present to the WHEN we are living; integrating the head and the heart; learning how to have healthy boundaries; and learning how to communicate that which is our truth. I could speak for hours about parts of self, the archetypes that are our saboteurs or champions, and the specialness of finding the true spark that makes us know without a doubt that we are meant to be here. And that, the spark, although it sounds the hardest to people, is really the simplest, because we were born with it. The rest is taught. For me, seeking, knowing there was more than the obvious, than the physical world, made me a seeker going deep early on. My own trials and tribulations, insecurities, and struggles were abundant- as was my strength. In life, and specifically early trauma, taught me strength, fear, survival, self-preservation, and the ways to move on and eventually heal. That has made me the clinician I have been- add wisdom and a great education to that, and the tools to help are immense. Early stories of my work and the inspiration it brought are many but later expanding the work by recognizing that I could integrate my knowledge of energy, medicine, mind/body, and an individual’s strengths as healing tools led to a more exciting and full methodology. I love to help people think outside the box, understand their early conditioning, and create the life they want to live and explore the work they are meant to do in the world.

A couple of examples that help people on those journeys are:

I began as a teenage seeker. Majored in Anthropology, Art History, and Studio Art in College. I ended up going to graduate school in Art Therapy and becoming a licensed and board-certified art therapist because of one little boy, whom I met doing field work, who was afraid to go home because he lived on a dangerous street.

I’ve been working as a transformational coach and psychotherapist for over 40 years. I’ve worked in patient outpatient, private practice, and created multiple psycho educational courses for men, women, and couples. I’ve studied theosophy, multiple spiritual teachings, energy modalities, and neuroscience. With all that I have come to be working and playing in the sacred. Because all of this work we do with each other is simply sacred.

C26-19. Tammy J. Cohen, “Text Messages To My Sons”

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Tammy J. Cohen, on air from May 12th

At the heart of it, what led to discovering my mission: Back on 3/20/20, when the world shut down, I had time to pause, reflect, and think, and I realized I was not ok and I knew I had to act. I immersed myself in programs and coursework to understand why I felt unworthy, resentful, and disengaged.  To understand why I self-sabotaged and was reactive and judgmental.  I went on a journey of discovery and realized that everything I was learning was simply not taught in school.  So I decided to start sharing all this incredible wisdom I was learning from thought leaders across generations with my sons, because I wanted it to be different for them than it was for me growing up.

I realized that if I wanted to deepen my connection with my sons and change the relationship, I had to change the conversation and reach them where they are and where their generation is: on their cell phones.  This was the AHA moment for me to use technology differently and to commit to an unconditional practice of texting my sons a meaningful, intentional message daily.  No texting agendas, commands, reprimands, or reminders, no unsolicited advice, just an intentional message with no expectations of a response.  I knew I had to show up differently.  What I did not know was the ripple effect this practice would have on me over time.  I did not just deepen my connection with my sons; I deepened my connection to myself, and it changed me.  And this change rippled out to my family, friends, colleagues, and community.   My text messaging practice led to the publication of my book, “Text Messages To My Sons: A Guide to Using Mobile Devices to Connect and Communicate with Your Kids.

ADHD and Fibromyalgia

Shared Threads Between ADHD and Fibromyalgia

1. Nervous System Sensitivity

Both ADHD and Fibromyalgia involve a heightened sensitivity in the nervous system.

  • ADHD: the brain processes stimuli differently—often too much, too fast
  • Fibromyalgia: the body amplifies pain signals (called central sensitization)

In both, the system isn’t broken—it’s over-responsive.

2. Neurotransmitter Imbalances

Both conditions are linked to irregular levels of key brain chemicals:

  • Dopamine ? motivation, focus, reward
  • Serotonin ? mood, pain regulation
  • Norepinephrine ? alertness, stress response

This overlap explains why people may experience both focus challenges and chronic pain or fatigue.

3. Brain Fog & Cognitive Strain

Many describe:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mental fatigue

In ADHD it’s often called distractibility; in fibromyalgia, it’s commonly known as “fibro fog.”
But the lived experience can feel very similar—like trying to think through mist.

4. Sleep Disturbances

Sleep is often disrupted in both:

  • ADHD: difficulty settling the mind
  • Fibromyalgia: non-restorative sleep (you sleep, but don’t feel rested)

This creates a loop ? poor sleep ? worse symptoms ? more poor sleep

5. Emotional Regulation & Stress Sensitivity

Both conditions can heighten emotional responses:

  • ADHD ? emotional impulsivity, overwhelm
  • Fibromyalgia ? stress can trigger pain flares

The body and mind are deeply connected here—stress is not just emotional, it becomes physical.

6. Co-occurrence (They Often Show Up Together)

There’s growing awareness that people with ADHD are more likely to also experience fibromyalgia (and vice versa).

Why? Likely due to shared underlying patterns:

  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Trauma or chronic stress history
  • Genetic predispositions

A Gentle Way to See It

Rather than viewing either condition as a “fault,” many now see them as different ways of processing the world—with heightened awareness, sensitivity, and responsiveness.

That sensitivity can be exhausting…
but it can also carry deep intuition, empathy, and perception when supported well.

Support Approaches That Often Help Both

  • Nervous system regulation (breathing, gentle movement, meditation)
  • Consistent sleep rhythms
  • Anti-inflammatory nutrition
  • Mind-body practices (like EFT, yoga, somatic work)
  • Structured but flexible routines

The Role of Trauma & Life Experience

Many people with ADHD and Fibromyalgia share a history of prolonged stress or emotional strain.

Not always dramatic trauma—but:

  • long-term pressure
  • feeling unseen or misunderstood
  • constantly adapting to fit in

Over time, the body learns to stay “on alert.”
That alertness can later show up as:

  • racing thoughts (ADHD)
  • amplified pain signals (fibromyalgia)

The body remembers… even when the mind has moved on.

The “Push–Crash” Cycle

This is a big one—and often misunderstood.

Many people experience:

  • bursts of energy, creativity, or hyper focus
  • followed by deep fatigue or pain flares

This isn’t inconsistency—it’s a nervous system rhythm.

The challenge is learning:

  • when to ride the wave
  • and when to gently step back before the crash

That awareness becomes a form of self-leadership.

Sensory Overload Isn’t Just Mental

With ADHD, sensory overload is often talked about in terms of noise or distraction.
With fibromyalgia, it can show up as:

  • light sensitivity
  • sound sensitivity
  • touch sensitivity (even clothing can feel uncomfortable)

It’s the same root:
the system is taking in more than it can comfortably process.

The Diagnosis Gap (Especially for Women)

Many women are:

  • diagnosed late with ADHD
  • or never diagnosed at all

Instead, they may first receive labels like:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • chronic fatigue
  • fibromyalgia

Only later does the fuller picture emerge.

This can lead to years of:

  • self-doubt
  • pushing harder to “cope”
  • feeling something is off but not knowing what

The Body Isn’t Fighting You

This is perhaps the most important shift.

Instead of seeing symptoms as something to fight…
you can begin to see them as messages:

  • Pain ? “something needs tending”
  • Fatigue ? “you’ve gone beyond your reserves”
  • Distraction ? “your mind needs a different rhythm”

When listened to, the body often softens.

Regulation Over Control

Traditional approaches often focus on “managing” or “fixing.”

But what tends to help both conditions most is:

  • calming the nervous system
  • creating safety in the body
  • allowing rhythms instead of forcing structure

Simple things can be powerful:

  • slow breathing
  • gentle movement (not pushing)
  • reducing overstimulation
  • giving yourself permission to pause

A Perspective That May Resonate With You

There is often a deep, intuitive, perceptive nature in people with these experiences.

They:

  • feel more
  • notice more
  • sense more

Without support, it overwhelms.
With support, it becomes:

  • insight
  • empathy
  • creative intelligence
  • wisdom in action

A Closing Reflection

What if this isn’t something to “overcome”…
but something to understand, support, and work with?

Not less of you…
but a gentler, more aligned way of being you.

C26-10. Mary Farias & Economy Creators

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Mary Frias, on air from March 10th

I am an Economy Creator at heart, meaning that I have never fully embraced the traditional ways of earning money and having a “job.” Instead, I have followed my interests and desires and have found ways to earn money doing those things. For instance, my first job was as a gymnastics coach at 16 because I loved the sport, and I wanted to teach it to others. This was a focus for me for many years. When I wanted to combine my love of writing with the sport, I started my publishing company (IrisBlu Publishing) by writing and publishing a series of gymnastics books (called Gym Rats).

When my daughter was born, that evolved into opening a gymnastics center with my husband. As I coached and ran the programs, I felt the pull to do something even more. I was doing more than teaching gymnastics; I was teaching important life skills. But beyond that, I was teaching these kids how to believe in themselves. Because I wanted to be better so I could better serve them, I continuously looked to self-development resources to strengthen my coaching. I came across Bob Proctor, and in studying with him and his work, I realized that I had found the missing link: I found that although gymnastics was my path to get to this point, it wasn’t my destination. So in 2021, rather than rebuilding the gym after the pandemic, my husband and I decided to close it down and to go all-in as a personal and professional development consultant. Along with my new podcast and radio show, Economy Creators, I maintain my publishing company, and I use it as a way to further help my clients by publishing my own books, but also by publishing theirs, as well as spotlighting them and other economy creators on my show. I want to keep going to see where this journey takes me; I’m always listening to my intuition to guide me, following my desires.

The person behind the business is just as important as the person in the business. I believe in creating a YOU-shaped economy, one with each human being at its center. So a part of my economy, besides my businesses is that I’m a wife (husband, Marc) and mother of one daughter (Lola). I have adored horses since I was a child before I manifested my first pony, and now we own two horses now and spend every morning with them at the barn. We all eat a plant-based diet and have been for 12 years now.
