Karen Michalson has assumed many identities – criminal defense attorney, scholar and teacher of nineteenth-century British literature, and progressive rock band performer. All her experiences find a home in her writings as an award-winning, critically acclaimed author. She has written four novels, including The Maenad’s God, which was selected by Independent Book Review as one of the best novels 2022 and by IndieReader as one of the Best Reviewed Books of March 2023. It also received a 5-Star Highly Recommended Award of Excellence from The Historical Fiction Company and a Literary Titan Gold Book Award (2022). Her earlier novels form the Enemy Glory Trilogy: Enemy Glory, Hecate’s Glory, and The King’s Glory. Enemy Glory, the first book of the trilogy, was one of the books that received the most votes for the Locus Award for Best First Novel. It was chosen for Locus’s Recommended Reading List of Best First Novels. Michalson’s first book, a non-fiction work, Victorian Fantasy Literature’s Literary Battles with Church and Empire, examines the non-literary and non-aesthetic reasons underlying the bias in favor of realism in forming the traditional literary canon of nineteenth-century British fiction. As the last warm rays of summer start to mellow, they cast long shadows, heralding the approach of autumn. It’s always a bit melancholic when summer draws to an end, but fall, with its russet hues and crisp air, brings its own sense of purpose. It reminds me of turning pages in a book, which is apt because I’m about to dive deep into two significant writing projects.

The first is deeply personal – My Life’s Reflections. Penning down a lifetime of experiences, choices, moments of joy and sorrow is no small feat. It requires introspection, vulnerability, and sheer honesty. I need to encapsulate all that I’ve felt, seen, and done. While it’s daunting, I also believe it’s going to be therapeutic, allowing me to see patterns, learnings, and maybe even offer others some insights from my journey.

Then there’s the ‘Our Forgotten Children’ anthology. This is not merely a project; it embodies a movement. It’s a collection of tales from individuals who have actively worked with children, shedding light on the pressing need to transform the surroundings we nurture our children in. Each chapter is a testament—a voice, a story, an appeal, even an anthem of hope. These narratives highlight the inherent flaws in our systems and emphasize actionable ways to reform them, ensuring the well-being of both parents and children. By strengthening their bonds and fortifying their spirits, we can hope for a brighter future. Having Krystal Hille Publishing on board for the editing instills a sense of calm within me. Their esteemed reputation and meticulous approach guarantee that every tale will be treated with utmost respect and refinement. Yet, the road ahead is long – there’s the challenge of raising funds, streamlining coordination, and overseeing production. And the clock is ticking, with only four weeks at my disposal, to get all the chapters over to Krystal and raise that money to produce it.

The urgency isn’t just about the change in season; it’s also personal. The UK is calling me back. Family ties, with near death experiences with aging siblings, the need to see them is strong, as it has been 4 years since. The pandemic has been a formidable barrier, keeping me oceans apart from loved ones. This upcoming trip is about reconnection, healing, and maybe even finding some semblance of direction for the future in hand. But before that, the tasks at hand loom large. The next four weeks are going to be intense, filled with late-night writing sessions, brainstorming, and possibly copious amounts of coffee. But there’s a intense excitement too. The kind you feel when you’re on the brink of something profound. As the leaves turn golden and begin to fall, I’m reminded of the impermanence of it all and the importance of making every moment count.

Spores found on the teeth of a woman who died 18,000 years ago indicate fungi was part of our hunter-gatherer ancestors’ diet. Pre-Neolithic 7,000-year-old rock paintings found in the present-day Sahara Desert depict humans using psychedelic mushrooms. Two types of mushrooms were found on the 5,200-year-old corpse of “Otzi the Iceman,” one of the oldest human mummies ever found, strung on cords around his neck and carried in a pouch. Archaeologists surmise he was using them as anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and tinder, and that along with his weapons, mushrooms were a key tool in his survival kit.

I recall a particular show from a decade ago, which, interestingly enough, still resonates strongly with audiences today. The central theme of this production revolved around the concept of tone and its profound impact on our interactions with others. It explored how the manner in which we deliver our words sets the stage for how we are perceived and received by those around us.

Imagine this: you have a message to convey, an idea to share, or a point to make. Now, consider the importance of employing the right tone to accompany your words. It acts as an inviting ambassador, encouraging others to lend an ear and truly listen to what you have to say.
