YH22-08 Dr. John Poothullil is Challenging Health Dogma….

…and Exposing Medical Myths.

Your Health is your choice with Sara Troy and her guest Dr John Poothullil, on air from January 18th

Dr. John Poothullil Empowers Patients with New Scientific Insights and Complementary Approaches to Prevent Obesity, Reverse Diabetes, and Survive Cancer

John Poothullill practiced medicine as a pediatrician and allergist for more than 30 years, with 27 of those years in the state of Texas. He received his medical degree from the University of Kerala, India in 1968, after which he did two years of medical residency in Washington, DC and Phoenix, AZ, and two years of fellowship, one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the other in Ontario, Canada. He began his practice in 1974 and retired in 2008. He holds certifications from the American Board of Pediatrics, The American Board of Allergy & Immunology, and the Canadian Board of Pediatrics.

During his medical practice, John became interested in understanding the causes of and interconnections between hunger, satiation, and weight gain. His interest turned into a passion and a multi-decade personal study and research project that led him to read many medical journal articles, medical textbooks, and other scholarly works in biology, biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology, and cellular metabolic functions. This eventually guided Dr. Poothullil to investigate the theory of insulin resistance as it relates to diabetes. Recognizing that this theory was illogical, he spent a few years rethinking the biology behind high blood sugar and finally developed the fatty acid burn switch as the real cause of diabetes. Recently his own cancer diagnosis lead him to research cancer and childhood cancer.

RG22-08 Patrice Badami Educating Special Needs Children

Raising our gifted children with Sara Troy and her guest Patrice Badami, on air from February 22nd

What exactly does it mean to be an advocate for a child with special needs? Our goal, as caregivers, is always to raise children to be happy and successful. But how does a caregiver navigate the overwhelming and sometimes complicated world of laws, resources and programs in their community?

I am a special education teacher and mother of three. I have advocated for families with children who have special needs to ensure that they receive the special education services that they require for them to be appropriately facilitated at their home school district. I created a website to help students as they navigate their way back into the in-person educational settings. The website is entitled Acorntotree.com and it offers free academic and recreational support for children and families.

GV22-07 Sarajane Giere. My Pilot: A Story of War, Love, ALS.

Our Global Veterans with Sara Troy and her guest Sarajane Giere, on air from February 15th

Sarajane Giere, author of the new critically-acclaimed memoir My Pilot: A Story of War, Love, ALS

For many, the 1960s and 1970s were turbulent times in the United States. For Sarajane Giere, it was a time when she fell in love with her college sweetheart who became a pilot. She lived life from 30,000 feet in the air even when they were 10,000 miles apart. Her book, My Pilot: A Story of War, Love, ALS is a stirring memoir that touches hearts and allows us into the lives of a couple who leaned on each other during tough times in war and health – and who treasured their time together, raising a family, and seeing the world.

“I am so pleased that this book has received strong, positive attention from reviewers and has won a number of book awards,” says author Giere. “I set out to not only write a tribute to a wonderful man whose legacy lives on, but to honor a historical era, the value of service and courage, and what it takes to have a marriage that lasts more than a half-century.”

My Pilot has won three literary awards: The Independent Press Award, The Military Writers Society of America’s Silver Metal Award, and the NYC Big Book Award.

·         How she handled hearing news that her husband’s plane went down –twice– in Vietnam.

·         What it was like to be a military wife during wartime.

·         What the turbulent 1960s were really like during the Vietnam War.

·         Advice for military families welcoming back veterans or coping with PTSD.

·         What it was like to be wed to a pilot during flying’s Golden Era at Pan Am and Delta.

·         How she helped her husband live with ALS – and the toll of caregiving.

Giere offers a uniquely intimate glimpse into the life of a military wife as she tells the story of her fighter pilot husband, Bernie, a Vietnam Veteran who flew 214 combat missions in the war With soaring love and explicit honesty, she recounts the terror of the Vietnam years and the lifelong sacrifices that affected her pilot’s life and death.

Giere, a spunky military wife with a keen knack for storytelling, recounts her fighter pilot’s eventful Vietnam years through his handwritten letters and moving personal accounts. The harrowing shoot-down in enemy territory, the joy upon learning he had a son, and the loneliness of separation are among the many subjects covered. All the while, Sarajane worked with a local police detective to uncover evidence that brought one of her neighbors to justice. With a knack for detail, she recounts the uncertain years with Pan Am, and her husband Bernie’s missions with the NY Air National Guard’s world-class 106th Rescue and Recovery Wing for 25 years.

The love that brought this intrepid couple together during their college years can be felt through the words on every page. Their bond remained strong for 52 years, helping them grasp the courage they needed upon learning of Bernie’s ALS diagnosis later in life. In telling their story, she honors her family that includes the military community, and the nation that she holds dear to her heart.

“A woman recalls her life – never dull and sometimes terrifying – as an Air Force wife in this memoir. … And while of course she did not serve in Vietnam herself, she relates Bernie’s experiences, through conversations and letters, so vividly that readers receive a captivating peek into a soldier’s life there. This is an endearing reminiscence, a kind of love letter from the author to her husband, both sweet and wise. An affectionate recollection of a memorable marriage.”   – Kirkus Reviews

“Whatever happened we were stronger together.” That line defines this love story of a couple whose marriage embodied the vows of “in sickness and in health.” Sarajane Giere’s marriage to a fighter pilot survived not only the regular trials and tribulations of a typical marriage, but also separation during the Vietnam War, furloughs due to mass airline layoffs in the 80’s and finally, a terrible diagnosis of ALS. Through it all, this story read like a handbook, or a successful marriage. Sarajane writes candidly about how love and respect from each partner only strengthens the bonds of marriage. In the end, you know that every trial they underwent, they underwent it together.”–D. Bertino, 5-Star Amazon Review

MH22-07 Dr. Amelia Kelley. Thrive After an Abusive Relationship.

Mental Health Awareness with Sara troy and her guest Dr Amelia Kelley, on air from February 15th

What I Wish I Knew: Surviving and Thriving After an Abusive Relationship.

Whether you are a survivor of domestic violence, or in a relationship wrought with intimidation, gaslighting or control of any kind, it’s time to regain the part of yourself that you may have lost and find your support network to regain living your true authentic life. In What I Wish I Knew: Surviving and Thriving After an Abusive Relationship written by co-author Dr. Amelia Kelley and survivor Kendall Ann Combs, the authors use the journey of Ms. Combs’ tragic relationship experience along with Dr. Kelley’s trauma-informed, psychotherapist techniques and real strategies to support women and men who have experienced toxic, unhealthy, abusive relationships. Dr. Kelley’s whole health approach to healing and self-care is critical for those suffering from violence and other forms of relationship abuse. She shares eye-opening anecdotes, cutting-edge research, facts, and intimate wisdom in this much needed, gripping guide.
The statistics of physical abuse in relationships are still astounding:

  • 1 in 3 women have been abused by an intimate partner in their lifetime, according to the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • However, emotional abuse is almost equal for both genders, with close to half of both having experienced at least one form of psychological aggression by an intimate partner (which can include gaslighting, coercive control, being insulted, humiliated, or acted upon in a dangerous manner). CDC/2018*
  • In addition, COVID 19 exacerbated alarming statistics regarding domestic violence and emotional abuse in the U.S. (NIH**).
