TH18-29 Feroze Dada, author of “Children Of The Revolution”

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Feroze Dada, on air from July 17th

Children of the Revolution A Spiritual Journey to Burma and Buddhism – A Powerful and Compelling Story of Heroism & Hope By Feroze Dada. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Children of the Revolution is a truly inspiring story about Feroze Dada, a Chartered Accountant from London, and his chance meeting with a freedom fighter and a Buddhist monk in Myanmar which transforms the lives of a great many orphaned and abandoned children being looked after in a remote monastery on the shores of Lake Inle by making the monastery financially independent – setting up a drinking water bottling plant and establishing a teaching programme. At the same time, the journey they take provides him with a deep and enduring sense of purpose and self-discovery.

His Holiness the Dalai Lamai has said – “Feroze Dada, gives a moving account of a monk’s work and talks about his own efforts to support a school and a care centre for destitute Burmese children started by the monk in his monastery. I offer my prayers for their success.” Children of the Revolution is not simply a book about Myanmar’s journey towards a new freedom, with all of the complexity that freedom brings. It is also a story of the author’s own journey: as a Muslim absorbing Buddhist philosophy and in so doing building a bridge towards peace which offers a transformative vision about how to live a meaningful life that will bring education and hope to thousands of Burmese children. Children of the Revolution is Feroze Dada’s first book. All proceeds of the book go to the monastery school and orphanage at Inle, Phaya Taung. Feroze Dada set up the Inle Trust Charity www.inletrust.org.uk to provide the relief of poverty and education in Myanmar and has so far has set up educational, healthcare and water facilities at the monastery.

The story behind Ko Yin Fresh Drinking Water

We were travelling on a small boat on Inle Lake when a freak storm hit the lake. We were put ashore in the village of Phaya Taung and were given shelter by the monks. What happened next changed our lives……….and we are now looking to change the lives of 1000 abandoned and orphaned children at the monastery.

Whilst staying at the monastery I discovered this clean mountain water source on the monastery land. Because of malaria and water-borne diseases, there is a huge need & demand for bottled water. It is clear that given the Monk’s reputation and the good work they are doing that the people in the surrounding towns and villages would buy this bottled water knowing that every bottle that they buy will pay for one meal for a young school child.

Feroze was born in Karachi. He has lived and worked for most of his life in London and is married to MuMu (Farida) Maung Dada. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax advisor he was Managing Partner of his private client tax practice in London Mayfair for 25 years. Feroze is also a guest interviewer with TVapex, a community TV channel where he has interviewed everyone from a Buddhist monk to the legendary Andrea Bocelli on the subject of humanity.

MA18-28 Bully Busting 101 with Doug Setter

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Doug Setter, on air from July 3rd

Bully Busting 101

The current “Nanny State” approach to bullying has failed in many ways:

  1. The victim has to rely on an institution to protect them.
  2. The schools set up an environment that not only encourages bullying but sets the school up for liability. (A friend’s son was punched at school, and following the school’s policy, put his hands behind his back and walked away.  The bully was allowed to hit others without fear of punishment.)
  3. The bully label is overused. A suspect and real bullies are being accused and bullied into not bullying.

One of the myths of bullying is that school shooters were driven to the act of destruction.  When in reality, school shooters were usually the biggest bullies with inflated egos and other bullies were NOT targeted.

The usual targets of bullying are the kids from different ethnic backgrounds, single-parent families and who have moved frequently.  Less stability, less home life and definitely less authority figures.  There is less respect for elders, fathers, mothers, teachers and law enforcement.  Teachers have little authority, police are constantly suspended and criticized and even military instructors are charged over the wrong comment.

This lack of authority makes the students and workers feel unsafe around bullies. Even young, “teen” elephants will calm down and stop destroying things in the company of older male elephants.

The overcrowding of classrooms, distressed family life, disconnected youth, the lack of Physical Education and exploiting media take away the confidence of young people.  Instead of talking with friends (about what jerks certain people are) or taking action, children rely on the passive, media advice and ever-shifting school and work policies.

30 years ago, even when bullied at school, there were opportunities for other students to shun the bully or for the victim to fight his/her way up the food chain.  Sometimes giving a bully a good threat or a kick-in-the-butt was enough to stop months and months of daily harassment and berating.

The individual has to be able to say, “Hey, that is out of line,” to the guilty parties.

In high school, I recall seeing the hockey team captain, twisting his girlfriend’s arm and laughing while she screamed.  No one said anything.  I was really surprised at all of the “cool” people just standing by.  It was about then, I realized that “the cavalry is not coming to the rescue.”  One has to rely on their own initiative for self-protection.

Later, in the military, I saw a trial of a trainee who committed sexual assault and clinically mentally ill instructor bully, harass and hurt trainees and staff.   None of the high commands did anything until I took unofficial action against both of these criminals.

This does not mean physically harming others or doing malicious acts.  Even self-defence involves humane “reasonable force.”  It does mean that the person has to build some moral fibre and self-confidence on their own.  While they do not have to buy a gun, hire a bodyguard or become a martial arts master.  It does mean having a sense of self and self-confidence.  That can only happen with the individual and not over-sensitivity or over-protection.

The “karate-mill” martial arts businesses are not really doing much service, either.  They water down their training to gain more students and leave many students with a false sense of confidence.

Brandon is an author and a public speaker. However, more importantly, he is a husband and a father of 5 beautiful daughters. Natives of South Carolina, the Walden family is currently residing in Northern California. As a young man, Brandon was a talented singer-songwriter and a gifted visual artist. He dreamed of using his love of art, and desire to help people, by studying art and psychology and had desired to become an art therapist. However, upon graduating high school, Brandon found himself pursuing missions opportunities in third world countries to serve the poor and needy. This decision informed him greatly in his desire to serve the broken, but completely changed his trajectory as a young man. For many years you’d find him travelling the world looking for opportunities to serve.

Several years later he married his best friend, Stephanie. Years into marriage and having children Brandon began a journey of healing and therapy. As a young man, he had endured sexual abuse from the age of 6-9yrs old. This was a secret he held for over 25yrs. He soon realized the pain he was enduring was causing pain to those around him. He’s spent the past 5 years turning hurt into healing and pain into purpose. It was through this healing journey that he began to write his first children’s book called, Seeds and Trees. It’s a story about the heart and the power of words. Brandon often says it’s his personal biography cleverly disguised as a children’s book. He and his wife formed The Treasured Tree, LLC. late in 2017 as a collaborative company creating resources for parents, teachers and therapist. Brandon’s team is currently preparing a curriculum that can be used in public schools and home schools across the nation based on the concepts presented in Seeds and Trees.

Tsm 18-19 Comfort Cases changing children’s lives with Rob Scheer

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Robert Scheer, on air from May 8th

On any given day, nearly 437,500 youth in the foster care system in the United States.  Of the thousands of youth who enter the system each year, most arrive carrying little more than the clothes on their backs.  If they are afforded the opportunity to collect any personal belongings, many are then given a trash bag in which to place and carry their personal items.  It is a time of great upheaval and instability, and their first foster home placement is unlikely to be their last.  Many youths in foster care will be moved from home to home multiple times, carrying their life’s treasures in a trash bag.  At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity.  Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their own.  It is our mission as a charity to provide a proper bag, filled with comfort and essential items, to these brave youth in foster care on their journey to find them forever home.

Every child deserves to know that they matter.  When Comfort Cases provides a case to a child in need, we not only offer them new items that they can keep during their journey, we also provide them with dignity and the notion that someone cares about what they are going through.

We have now reached youth in foster care in 34 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and Canada.  We have distributed over 30,000 Cases.  We are so excited by the progress, but also remain steadfastly focused on all the kids we haven’t reached yet.  With nearly half a million kids in care in the US, the need is great, and we have lots of work to do!  Our goal is to put a Comfort Case in the hands of all of the kids in care.
