When her plane went down killing 107 out of 109 passengers, Kachi did not know that there journey to recovery would be so tough, but a woman of resilience and gratitude for life, she gets on with life and living in her purpose.

My name is Kechi Okwuchi and I am a 26 years old, born in Nigeria.

On December 10th 2005, I was headed home from boarding school for the Christmas holidays aboard a local airplane which crashed and killed 107 out of 109 passengers, 60 of whom were fellow students. I suffered third-degree burns over 65% of my body, and I have had to undergo multiple intensive surgical procedures ever since.

Two years into my treatments in America, I decided I wanted to finish high school and enter into a good university by my own merit. I had a strong support system- my family, my friends and my faith- who believed that I would be able to overcome my physical and mental obstacles and achieve my goal. In 2015, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of St. Thomas with an Economics and Marketing BBA. I am currently a market analyst for  African League Of Legends bubble, helping with the development of a marketing campaign for an African art show to be hosted by the non-profit organization in 2016.

TMS16/03 The Need of a LOO (toilet)

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Jasmine Burton aired January 19th-24th

Not everyone has a LOO

IMG_2323We take for granted in the Western world that everyone has a flushing toilet, but that is not true, a number of people in the world without a loo is huge and this can cause sickness. One team took this on and came up with a LOO (toilet) that can be used anywhere in the world giving sanitation and some dignity to those that need it.

Now with the refugees being scattered in camps, this product is in even more need.

Wish for WASH, LLC is a social impact organization that strives to bring innovation to sanitation through culturally specific design, research, and education. The SafiChoo toilet system, Wish for WASH’s first sanitation model tailored initially intended for a Kenyan refugee community, premiered in Fall 2013 as a Georgia Tech senior design project. Since then, our team has evolved into a talented group of young and diverse engineers, designers, business analysts, and development researchers – dedicating their skills to disrupt how the world is tackling sanitation relief products and services. The most current SafiChoo design is composed of separate, modular units, which enables the user to chose the elements of the system to best meet their specific needs. Our collective teamwork and my exposure through the Spring 2015 TedxAtlanta talk in addition to a number of other speaking events have brought Wish for WASH to the attention of numerous international aid and relief agencies interested in our mission and products. Our efforts are now turned toward completing a beta test in Spring 2016 in communities outside of Lusaka, Zambia, which will focus on user experience and overall feasibility of the product in partnership with our target users.

12391955_10205426035306728_3542550507709458489_nJasmine Burton was born and raised in Dunwoody, Georgia. In 2014, her senior design team won the Georgia Tech InVenture Prize Competition, the largest undergraduate invention competition in the United States, for their design of an inexpensive mobile toilet, SafiChoo. Before graduating, from Georgia Tech’s Industrial Design Program, she participated in the Georgia Tech Women’s Leadership conference, the CDC’s Summer Public Health Scholars Program, Humanity in Action Fellowship and Industrial Design studio classes that emphasized ethnography and social impact work. She hopes to improve women’s health via redesigning water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure which is why she founded Wish for WASH, a social impact startup that seeks to bring innovation to sanitation. Over the next year, Jasmine is serving as Global Health Corps Fellow in Lusaka, Zambia working as a design specialist at the Society for Family Health. Jasmine identifies as a humanitarian design activist and, ultimately, seeks to use her creativity to make the world smile.

TSM 16/01 Coming Through the Fog of Autism

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Tami Goldstein aired from January 5th

A Journey Through Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder to Functioning Recovery and Independent Living

ASD-UmbrellaWhen her youngest child was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, Tami spent the next few years in a tailspin trying to find ways to help her daughter. She watched in amazement as a more holistic, all natural approach did what no western medicine techniques could accomplish. Some of those approaches included various techniques to stimulate the sense of touch.

Tami started by studying Reiki Therapy. Reiki a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. The first part Rei, refers to our spiritual dimension or soul. The second part Ki, means vital life or energy. This ancient natural method of healing touches the body without physically touching the body. (How else do you connect with a child who feels pain when you touch them?)

The benefits this approach provided opened Tami’s eyes to try other techniques. While she worked toward a Master/Teacher level in Reiki, she also sampled Yoga, learned Feng Sui, and began receiving regular massages & CranioSacral treatments, Chiropractic adjustments and Acupuncture.

TSM 15/49 “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Soul”

Their Story Matters with Sara Troy and her guest Robert Clancy aired from December 8th/15 on.

Volunteerism and Love are at the Heart of Robert’s Clancy’s

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Soul”

guide

An Evocative Collection of Inspirational Stories and Transcendental Journeys That Transform the Way You Think About Community Service and Humanity

“Daily Downloads and Fortune Cookies from the Universe” is Clancy’s Second Book Delivering Nuggets of Inspiration Every Day

Clancy says that “soul hitches” occur every day in interactions with others: any interaction-large or small that changes how one view oneself, an event or the world. A chance run-in with a stranger or an intimate conversation with a family member creates an indelible imprint on our soul. You hitch a ride on someone’ else’s soul and you are changed forever. Consider it hitching a ride on a big beautiful cosmic highway!

And how does one experience more of these incredible life-altering experiences? One amazing way is by volunteering by putting yourself out in the world to help others. Says Clancy, “The more you reach out and help others, the more you’ll be guided on your highway naturally.”

bookWelcome to Clancy’s inspiring book:“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Soul: A Collection of Scenic Views of Volunteerism, Transcendental Encounters with Kindred Spirits and Lessons in Compassion.”

The book is a soul-filled travelogue of experiences in which volunteerism is the catalyst for life-changing events and joyful interaction. The book is born from Clancy’s own passion to serve, which began when he was just six years old. He is an entrepreneur, inspirational speaker, ordained minister, master martial arts instructor in both Tae Kwon Do & Chon-Tu Kwan Hapkido.  Clancy is a published author from the heart of upstate New York who experienced a life-defining spiritual experience at the age of 19 that he writes about in his upcoming book with the working title, Soul Cyphers – Decoding a Life of Hope and Happiness

Today, he blends his beautiful consciousness into his business life as co-founder and managing partner of Spiral Design Studio, one of the largest full-service graphic design and web development firms in the Northeast. Spiral Design’s clients include dozens of corporations, educational & healthcare organizations, non-profits and startups, including Citigroup, Home Depot, Sears, Activision, Disney, among many others.

RICHARD CLANCYBalancing his corporate commitments with his lifelong love and compassion for humanity, Clancy supports ongoing volunteerism within his business and his everyday life. His dedication to community – at both the regional and national levels – inspires his team and encourages youth, as well as professional leaders, to step up and give back.

Says legendary actor, author, and philanthropist Hugh O’Brian, who wrote the book’s foreword, “Robert is one of those people to whom I tip my hat. He is a dedicated volunteer who completely embodies the spirit of service-a selfless commitment to helping others to make a positive difference in the world.”http://hoby.org

However, Clancy may best be known by the general public for his Facebook fan page “Robert Clancy-Guide to the Soul” which has a quarter of a million followers worldwide. Here he offers divinely inspired thoughts and reflections that provide wisdom, thoughtfulness, and encouragement to people hungry to get more out of life.

And so it follows naturally, that his second book Daily Downloads and Fortune Cookies from the Universe, provides inspirational thoughts within nine uplifting categories–faith, hope, love, compassion, giving, peace, happiness, strength, and leadership–to help center one’s spirit and encourage compassion for humanity. This collection of nuggets is guaranteed to put a smile on someone’s face, create a cozy warmth and motivate one to make a difference.
