Parents, Children & Extended Family

Every family is different and trauma can dramatically disrupt family systems. Even though your specific set of circumstances will be unique to you and your family, it’s reassuring to know you are not alone. In our work, we will explore communication techniques and relationship building for families. We will dissect communication issues within the family dynamic and explore non-verbal communication, appreciative inquiry, and family tiers and group living as it applies to your healing.

We will explore your families belief system and see what beliefs are serving or enslaving you. Discuss values that are shared by the group and the individuals within that group and dissolve some of the residues that trauma can cause. In the process, we will be improving family and individual happiness, communication and creating a healthier sustainable living. We work to provide a structure that moves the family beyond the past trauma and into the future with a new positive outlook. Is your family ready for a change?

What is Trauma?

A deeply distressing or disturbing experience or physical injury. Traumas are frightening, often dangerous, and/or violent events or conditions that are experienced as overwhelming to a family and/or any or all its individual members. Every family member experiences trauma differently.

What are types of Trauma?

There are many kinds of potentially traumatic experiences, such as:

Accident/Injury, Death of a loved one, Serious illness, Fire, Animal Attacks, Violence/Crime, Divorce/Separation, Abuse/Sexual, Homelessness, Bullying, War Environments, School Violence, etc.

What is Moving the Human Spirit’s approach?

Employing a range of un-invasive techniques such as Emotional Intelligence, Mindfulness, Self Exploration, Perceptual Positioning and Core Alignment we work with clients to free them of the feelings that hold them back from a productive life. Many clients will experience a new focus and gain more control over their situations and start the necessary steps to “Mastering Trauma”.

We centre and ground our clients so they may take the opportunity to view the world with a positive lens, dive in deep within themselves, explore their values and beliefs systems to see what works and what doesn’t all while being solution focused in their direction.

You are whole and complete.

We come from a place that there is nothing wrong with the client. They are unique, whole and complete just the way they are. They may have forgotten that they may be far down the rabbit hole and not able to see light just yet, but we know its there and watch as they use their resources to excavate their way to the surface again. Empathy plays a huge role in client’s transformations. As trauma informed coaches we hold a space for the work to be done without judgment and guide our client to the positive.

What is P.T.S.D.?

In severe cases, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops after a person is exposed to one or more traumatic events, which can store itself in the subconscious. People with PTSD often re-experience the trauma through disturbing flashbacks or triggers that relate to the event. This may be a sound, smell, sign or sense of something as they go about daily routines. As a result one can start exhibiting symptoms such as constant avoidance, inability to return to work and hyperarousal resulting in an array of medical conditions due to the physical drain on the body.

?What can cause P.T.S.D.?

Events that can cause PTSD are sexual assault or abuse, home invasions, natural disasters, warfare, severe and serious injury, auto accidents, homicide, suicide, or threats of imminent death resulting from certain lines of duty that can result in feelings of intense fear, horror and powerlessness.

Who gets PTSD?

Anyone can suffer from PTSD, it is prevalent in first responders, military personnel and everyday people who are, or have been, subject to situations of discomfort, be it past or present. We coach around the recovery and daily living with extreme anxiety and related conditions of PTSD. Although not all anxiety related disorders are curable, we believe they are manageable with the right tools and effort put forward from our clients that want to start the path of healing and forging a better life. Our primary focus is on Mastering the diagnosis and Post Traumatic Growth (PTG).

What is Post-traumatic growth?

Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) is a term for the positive life changes that may come from trauma. PTG is considered to be the opposite of PTSD. For some patients and caregivers, the trauma experience inspires them to question their beliefs, attitudes, life goals, and relationships and leads them on a path of deeper understanding of the relationships they hold, with others and with themselves. We help clients benefit from positive psychological change experienced as a result of adversity and other challenges that help them rise to a higher level of functioning.

What is Moving the Human Spirits approach?

We work toward “Mastering the trauma”. Although most therapies for PTSD are based on a review of an incident we come from a completely different angle, one of solution focused. In solution focused work we encourage the client to become resourceful and find the strengths within them to arrive at their own solutions. The solution focused approach is where we work with the individual or couple from the “exact place” where they are on the day we have the session. We look forward in a positive, problem-solving environment and do not give energy to the long list of “I don’t want”. Instead we ask the deep questions of, “what do you want instead?” Even that one small question moving you from negative to positive has a huge paradigm shift within our clients. This moves us into our Prefrontal Cortex or Executive Brain as we call it, where we generate solutions and possibilities. Our conversations around PTSD will be discussed as PTG, moving the client from the negative energy and into a more positive resourceful area.

We centre and ground our clients so they may take the opportunity to view the world with a positive lens, dive in deep within themselves, explore their values and beliefs systems to see what works and what doesn’t.

What are Values?

value is a measure of the worth or importance a person attaches to something; our values are often reflected in the way we live our lives. eg I value freedom of speech, or I value my family, expressed through words and behaviour.

What are Beliefs?

Beliefs are described as a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing; it may be a belief in your god, a belief in democracy, it is usually something that is accepted, considered to be true, or held as an opinion, something that is believed.

Why are these important?

Here is where it gets interesting: This area, values and beliefs, starts to form our playground of possibility. When we can alter un-resourceful states (beliefs and values) and check to see if old states or habits are keeping us in the negative, we can then see what may need updating or changing to serve us better in a more positive light. This is where we start moving into “Mastery” and the resilience of post-traumatic growth.

We want to build resilience that is physical, mental, emotional and social. These areas can be dormant after sever trauma and re-engaging with these resilience’s, helps shift one into “Mastery” and living a fuller more enriched life.

Essentially we are guiding our clients to redefine who they are from a healthier more positive state. We are not removing the trauma, yet we are not making it the primary focus. Often their lives become organised into “life before the trauma” and “life after the trauma”. We acknowledge the realness of the trauma but refuse to let it control the recovery. We enquire “what do you want to be next” “How do you want to show up?”. Trauma does not have to be the defining guide on your life, it is too limiting. As clients start to realize that they are more resourceful living in the “here and now” they start flexing their ability to self-heal and re-engage. Their perceived limits no longer define them. They get to make a new declaration on life, one of forward positive change. They assume the position of who they are now and to let go of the past to get on with the business of living exceptional lives in the here and now.

You are whole and complete.

We come from a place that there is nothing wrong with the client. They are unique, whole and complete just the way they are. They may have forgotten that, they may be far down the rabbit hole and not able to see light just yet, but we know its there and watch as they use their resources to excavate their way to the surface again. Empathy plays a huge role in client’s transformations. As trauma informed coaches we hold a space for the work to be done without judgment and guide our client to the positive.

Neuroplasticity and the healing power of the Brain

Developments in neuroplasticity have proven that the brain is a powerful healing tool and is actually designed to have the ability to change and rewire nuero pathways. The importance of this in healing PTSD is we are aware that forging new pathways to positive reactions can now close the “loop” that gets created from a trauma. We can be a collaborator with our brain and support posttraumatic growth. It is not the brain that decides to not heal; it is the person that decides. Some people get caught in the process of PTSD because if they step out of it, they may have to take on a life again that has its own demands and requirements. The healing process can be raw and uncomfortable but once the person has committed to it and brings that power of their mind with it, they start playing in a limitless resource.

Everyone recovers differently because we are unique and that is something we should celebrate. The opportunity to heal is present if the individual wants the prize at the end. Nothing worth having come without work, no easy path has given the best that life offers; we must strive for, and own our Post Traumatic Growth and become familiar with the fine art of “Mastering our Trauma”.

Next broadcast in the series we will be speaking with Susan Hogarth on “Trauma and the Family”. Following that session, we will be interviewing Cindy Hogg around  “Trauma and Relationships”. Stay tuned and until then stay well.

To The Manor Born

Heir of Karen Blixen to take over Manor Estate in Denmark
• By Cecilia Macaulay and Peter Horn, www.ExecutiveMagazine.dk

A smooth transition takes careful planning as well as brave decisions. Running a family estate is not a job to be taken lightly. When Birgitte Dinesen took over the family estate of Kragerup manor, it was then a massive, debt ridden farm. What she hands over to her daughter Regitze is not only 2,700 acres of productive farmland. It´s also a luxury hotel, a four-star conference centre, a wind turbine energy park and Denmark’s first treetop rope climbing adventure trail.

RegitzeDinesen
Regitze Sophie Andersen Dinesen is learning how to become a squire. In five to eight years she shall take over her mother´s large estate Kragerup at Zealand, Denmark.
Bike Kragerup The role of new squire will be very different experience for Regitze Sophie Andersen Dinesen, 9th generation of the Kragerup Manor Estate and heir of world famous Danish author Karen Blixen. The difference in the two family members can be seen just looking at the vehicles parked in the courtyard: Regitze thunders around the estate on a big motorbike whereas Birgitte zips about in an electric cart. But when it comes to newfangled ideas Regitze says “Mum has do so much innovation that I have more than enough for a whole life. My focus is consolidation.”

Climbing to the top of towering wind turbines that will one day be her own, Regitze Sophie Andersen Dinesen can view the entire sprawling Manor she is now preparing to run. She can’t see the details, but years of hard work means she knows them intimately. The full ‘kingdom’ centres around the family manor house. Surrounding it is the luxury hotel and conference center, set in vast farmlands, 2,700 acres of food production. All this nestles in ancient woods that hosts a most un-traditional form of entertainment and income: a treetop ropeway climbing park: Kragerup Go High.

Regitze is now in training to take on the job title of Squire. That´s a position that doesn’t come up often, and a career path not supported by many universities at all. None, in fact. Two years ago she made the choice to take over the estate as the 9th generation Squire. Now 26, she has another 5 – 8 years to go, to complete the training she will need for this task.

The history of Kragerup goes back to 1327. The estate has belonged to the Dinesen Family since 1801, when bought by counsel Jens Kraft Dinesen. Since then the estate has been home for the family, well known for it´s officers, squires and authors. The most well-known being Baroness Karen Blixen, born Karen Dinesen. author of ‘Babettes Feast’ and ‘Out of Africa’. Karen Blixen often stayed with her cousins at the Kragerup estate, before she left Denmark for married life in Africa. Each year the estate´s current owner Birgitte Dinesen, also a lively storyteller, holds her own version of “Seven Fantastic Tales”, evenings for hundreds of guests, as she tells her rollicking adventures, the victories and near-misses of running the estate of Kragerup.

A tradition for female owners

Of the family´s 10 owners three have been women: Sophie Dinesen, who ran Kragerup as a widow, Ida, and now Birgitte.

Birgitte started working at Kragerup in 1986 and has been the sole owner since 1998. Regitze is to take over this role. Knowing that a steady income would fund a smooth transition, Birgitte looked for ways to make this happen for her daughter, and settled on building a wind farm, completed four years ago.  There are now six wind generators, rising 420 feet above the landscape, as tall as a 39 story building.  Each year they produce 50 million Kilowatts to sell, as well as and providing electricity to the entire estate, and several thousand neighbouring houses in Western Zealand.

Three Generations at Kraguerup
The Kragerup Manor Estate has been owned by the Dinesen Family since 1801. Three proud women of 7th, 8th, and 9th. generation, Marie Louise (middle), Birgitte (right) and Regitze Dinesen (left).
Olav and Birgitte Dinesen

Olav Ditlevsen and Birgitte Dinesen in front of the wind turbine energy park.
“Mum has been the inspirational innovator. She initiated and built the windfarm, the  treetop ropeway park. She created this hotel with 50 fabulously decorated rooms, The Restaurant ‘Blixen’, the Conference Center”.

The Centre is 4 Star, with luxury facilities and space for up to 350 delegates. ‘Blixen’ is an a la carte restaurant open to the public, serving innovative modern cuisine based on traditional Danish food and produce.

“She renovated all the old farm buildings, finding a new purpose for everything. Mum has started so much that I have enough projects to last a lifetime.  When I take over, the key word is consolidation,” Regitze Dinesen says.

The estate is heated by a biofuel boiler supplied by straw from the surrounding fields and it has it´s own water supply. More than 25 houses on the estate are leased out on a permanent basis. The wheat, barley, rye, rapeseed and seed grass that are grown are sold to wholesale companies. The meat from the highland cattle are made into gourmet burgers at the Go High Treetop climbing park, the salamis are sold in the farm shop and the steaks in the Blixen Restaurant. A large production of piglets are resold. Kragerup is carbon neutral and holds the “Green Key” environment certification.

Like her mother, Regitze is not afraid of good old hands-on labour. She has worked her way through most jobs at Kragerup, including dishwasher, maid, climb instructor at Go High, event coordinator and outdoor manager. She had a stint as guide for a package tour company TUI at Lanzarote and Sardinia. Before that, she was an exchange student at US Portland State University. She has a bachelor´s degree in psychology and business, and is now working on her Masters degree at night, while working as project coordinator for an event and branding agency. She speaks English, Spanish and Swedish beside her native Danish.  She has volunteered for Red Cross and a tutor at Copenhagen Business School.

“Travel is a large part of my life. I grab every opportunity to meet other cultures. It brings a healthy perspective to my own life. I probably got this taste for wandering from Mum. She has shown me a good part of the world. After high school I traveled the globe for almost two solid years. Travel is the best way to “fill my bag’ with experiences, gather a bit of life wisdom.”

A gift and an obligation

Birgitte Dinesen looks forward to reducing her working week. “I’m always finding myself  in the red,” she says, of her long hours. Leaving the responsibilities of an estate with more than 70 employees behind isn’t easy.  She recently made an escape to Spain, to walk The Camino, joining the other pilgrims for a 400 miles countryside stoll.  “Most people would call it stress. Before I went walking I’d had hardly any sleep, could barely remember my own name.”

“It is not entirely a gift to be the 8th generation owner of an estate this size.  I have been raised to be proud. This approach makes me want to pass on Kragerup in a finer state than when I took over. I´m looking forward to the day when Regitze becomes the owner and I can step down. Telling tales to the guests, doing the flower decorations, that´s all the duties I want,” she says.

Kragerup Estate
Kragerup has been completely renovated as a luxury hotel and conference center by the present owner Birgitte Dinesen. Now her daughter Regitze is to take over the entire estate.

Birgitte and Regitze have always been close, but Birgitte has promised that when the time comes for the handover, she’ll move to another postcode to be well out of her daughter’s way.

Regitze has chosen to focus on the business part of the estate´s operations, including devising strategy, showing leadership and keeping an eye on finances. “Mum and I have different educations, different personal profiles and so quite different approaches to running the estate. She has done everything, started the hotel and conference center pretty much from scratch.  It was just five bed and breakfast rooms, where she cooked, did the cleaning and wrote up the bills. She has renovated pretty much all the buildings, with the support of her fiancée Olav, who manages the agriculture business. A strong engagement like that leads to very long working days though, for the two of them. I respect her determination, her will to reach her goals. Mum has done such a fantastic job and committed all her life to that single purpose. I feel  so privileged to run an exciting business like that while also having a private life to enjoy.”

To secure Regitze a good start as Squire, Birgitte and herself recently established an advisory board to play the role as Regitze´s ‘backing group’.  The group shall advise on strategy and the future business plan. The board consists of well known Danish non-executive directors and specialists within agriculture, leisure, conference operations, communication, events and finance.

“I have been fast at making decisions, sometimes maybe a little too fast. In the 1990´s I founded the largest ostrich farm in Denmark. I was familiar with the meat from my time in South Africa, where I worked for two years. The meat is red and tender, but the Danes didn´t like it, so it was not my best idea. It was quite different when we thought up the wind energy park. The idea was in fact not mine. A developer wanted to hire a small piece of my land for the project. I thought we could do better on our own. I went to my bank to borrow £16 million. “Money for windmills?”. The bank wouldn´t lend me a penny. Having asked six other banks at Zealand I went to the home county of the windmills, Western Jutland. At the “Windmill Bank” they knew more about the business and were willing to make the loan.  Kragerup Windmill Park was built almost five years ago and within 10 years it can finance most of the transition. It has been a condition that Regitze must have the financial security to run Kragerup in a way that allows her to focus on improving operations.”

Birgitte Dinesen is quite sure that Regitze shall make full use of the broad education she has had though jobs she has taken on both in Denmark and abroad. She herself has fond memories of the years she studied and worked abroad, including a boarding school for girls in the UK, and two years each working in South Africa, America and Australia. Her father made her come home to to receive a formal education at an agriculture school in Denmark.

Her years in Africa had a similar impact on her creative life as they did to her famous relative Karen Blixen.  Today Birgitte is a respected and devoted painter, exhibiting at art galleries all over the country. African animals are a frequent subject of her work, many of which can be seen in the manor´s main building.

“We work for the same cause, a good, healthy continuity of the Kragerup Estate. The ways we operate differ though. I have been the innovative and intuitive entrepreneur, with different ideas on the go, trying and testing things out.  Regitze has a far more systematic and strategic approach. She will really need those skills, to make her contribution to Kragerup and the employees. I’m more the master and impatient soul,” Birgitte Dinesen says.

How to become Master of a Manor Estate

There is no formal education for the job of running a manor Estate as the hereditary owner, or esquire.   The usual preparation for this unusual position would be an agricultural education, alongside a Bachelor or Masters in Business or Economics.  In Regitze case, she has to learn the hotel and event business as well as managing the farming operations.

She is now doing an apprenticeship under her mother, Birgitte Dinesen.  Birgitte holds the title of Squire, Chamberlady to HRM Queen Margrethe of Denmark, and holds a regular degree in Economics.

Other activities:

Regitze takes part in meetings on the Kragerup Manor Estate´s strategy and business plan with Birgitte Dinesen and a newly formed advisory board.

Focus areas:

Consolidation of activities within hotel, conference and event, agriculture, energy production and experience leadership.

Future occupation:

Landowner and Managing Director with responsibility for operations, marketing, economy and HR. Supported by an agriculture manager, at the time being Birgitte’s fiancee Olav Ditlevsen. Olav is to guide Regitze regarding all farming decisions. She will be responsible for 70 employees and a yearly turnover of more than £6 million.
